Market for battery metal lithium erupts as CATL shuts one of world's biggest mines
Shanghai - Lithium prices and stocks spiked on Aug 11 after battery giant Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. Ltd. (CATL) halted operations at a major mine in China, spurring speculation that Beijing might move to suspend other projects as it tackles overcapacity across the economy.
Tianqi Lithium jumped as much as 19 per cent in Hong Kong, while Ganfeng Lithium Group surged 21 per cent, and Australian miners rallied, after CATL confirmed it had shut the mine in Jiangxi province. Prices of the battery metal on the Guangzhou Futures Exchange surged by the daily 8 per cent limit.
The fate of the CATL mine – the biggest in China's lithium hub of Yichun – had been under close scrutiny for weeks, amid speculation that authorities wouldn't extend its licence. The mine accounts for some 6 per cent of global output, according to Bank of America, while other mines in the region account for at least another 5 per cent.
'I think it will mean the lithium price in the near term has very big upside,' Matty Zhao, co-head of China equity research at the lender, said in a Bloomberg TV interview.
Lithium producers have struggled with a global supply glut exacerbated by demand headwinds for electric vehicles, including President Donald Trump's rollback of incentives for the industry in the United States. In China, the so-called anti-involution campaign has fueled speculation about a possible crackdown on a sector that's clearly suffering from oversupply.
CATL, the world's biggest battery producer, said the stoppage would have little impact on its overall operations, and its shares rose as much as 2.8 per cent in Hong Kong before paring about half of the gains.
'For CATL we do not expect any meaningful operational impact to battery production from the Jiangxi mine suspension,' said Eugene Hsiao, the head of China equity strategy at Macquarie Capital. 'The concern from the mine suspension is less on CATL and more on if the broader lithium supply chain can see tighter capacity, and if this will be coordinated via Chinese government actions.'
The 'anti-involution' theme has gripped China's financial markets in recent months, with investors trying to pinpoint industries and companies that might benefit from Beijing-led efforts to tackle deflation and overcapacity. It's encompassed sectors from e-commerce to EVs and steelmaking.
Like many Chinese battery companies, CATL has aggressively expanded investments in minerals from lithium to nickel and cobalt in order to lock in long-term supplies and lower costs. That vertical integration has in turn aided China's push to become the world's leading EV manufacturer.
Traders and industry executives are now watching for other mining curbs around China's Yichun city, which has emerged as a battery-metals hub. A local government department has asked eight miners to submit reserves reports by the end of September, according to notes from brokers and analysts, following an audit that found non-compliance in the registration and approvals process.
'CATL's situation does not change the oversupply structure in the market,' said Zhang Weixin, an analyst at China Futures. 'However, if production disruption is expanded to other mines in Yichun after Sept. 30, the lithium price level could go even higher.' BLOOMBERG

Trump extends China truce for 90 days, averting tariff hike
[WASHINGTON] US President Donald Trump extended a pause of sky-high tariffs on Chinese goods for another 90 days into early November, stabilising trade ties between the world's two largest economies. Trump signed an order extending the truce, according to a source familiar with the matter. The pact, which saw the US and China agree to reduce tit-for-tat tariff hikes and ease export restrictions on rare earth magnets and certain technologies, was due to expire on Tuesday (Aug 12). The text of the order was not immediately available and it was unclear if it included any other changes to US trade policy or to the terms of the arrangement. Negotiators from both sides reached a preliminary agreement to keep the deal last month in Sweden, and the president's advisers had expressed optimism he would approve it, but Trump has made last-minute demands and changes in prior trade matters. Had the truce not been extended, US tariffs on Chinese goods would have jumped to at least 54 per cent starting after midnight in New York. The White House declined multiple requests for comment. Trump, speaking to reporters earlier Monday, demurred when asked if he would extend the deal. CNBC reported earlier on the signing. An escalation between Washington and Beijing earlier this year shook global financial markets. It will also gives the countries more time to discuss other unresolved issues such as duties tied to fentanyl trafficking that Trump has levied on Beijing, American concerns about Chinese purchases of sanctioned Russian and Iranian oil and disagreements around US business operations in China. The signing may clear the path for Trump to visit China to meet with President Xi Jinping in late October, around the time of an international meeting in South Korea that the US leader is likely to attend. Nvidia and Advanced Micro Devices reached deals with the Trump administration to secure export licenses by agreeing to pay 15 per cent of their revenues from certain Chinese artificial intelligence (AI) chip sales to the US government. Trump earlier Monday also signalled openness to separately allowing Nvidia to sell a scaled-back version of its most advanced AI chip to China, saying: 'It's possible I'd make a deal'. With the deadline nearing, Trump on Sunday had called on Beijing to quadruple purchases of American soybeans, something he said would held reduce the US trade deficit with China. Trump's decision to extend the truce follows two days of discussions in Stockholm in July led by US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Chinese Vice-Premier He Lifeng, the third round of talks between Washington and Beijing in less than three months. Both sides have been taking steps to turn down the temperature and reduce flashpoints recently, with Chinese exports of rare earth magnets starting to recover in June and the US saying it would approve shipments of a semiconductor used for AI that it had blocked. US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer, who participated in the Stockholm negotiations, has sounded an optimistic note on discussions with China over rare earth flows, saying that the US had secured commitments about their supply. 'We are focused on making sure that magnets from China to the United States and the adjacent supply chain can flow as freely as it did before the control,' Greer told CBS's Face the Nation in a recent interview. 'And I would say we are about halfway there.' Flows of rare earth magnets from China to the US rose to 353 tonnes in June, up from just 46 tonnes in May, according to the latest customs data. Total shipments were still substantially lower than before Beijing launched export controls in early April. Sales of advanced AI chips remain an issue, despite Trump's decision to relax export controls. Chinese authorities in late July summoned Nvidia to discuss alleged security vulnerabilities related to its H20 chips. Tariff push China-US negotiations have been on a separate track from other talks the Trump administration has held with trading partners as it moves to implement sweeping so-called reciprocal tariffs and industry-specific levies on other economies. Oil settles flat ahead of US-Russia talks
[HOUSTON] Oil settled flat on Monday after falling more than 4 per cent last week, as investors looked towards talks this week between the US and Russia over the war in Ukraine. Brent crude futures settled up 4 cents, or 0.06 per cent, at US$66.63 a barrel. US West Texas Intermediate crude futures settled up 8 cents, or 0.13 per cent, at US$63.96. US President Donald Trump said on Friday he would meet Russian President Vladimir Putin on Aug 15 in Alaska to negotiate an end to the war in Ukraine. The talks follow increased US pressure on Russia, raising the prospect of tighter penalties on Moscow if a peace deal is not reached. Trump said on Monday both Ukraine and Russia would have to cede land to each other to end the war and that his talks with Putin would be aimed at taking the temperature on a possible deal. 'The recent sell-off in crude has paused as markets await Friday's high-stakes meeting,' StoneX analyst Alex Hodes said in a note on Monday. Trump set a deadline of last Friday for Russia, which invaded Ukraine in February 2022, to agree to peace or have its oil buyers face secondary sanctions. UBS has lowered its year-end Brent crude forecast to US$62 a barrel from US$68, citing higher supply from South America and resilient output from sanctioned countries. Indian demand had fallen short of expectations of late, the bank said, adding it expected Opec+ to pause its production increases unless larger unexpected supply disruptions emerge. Opec's oil output rose further in July after an Opec+ agreement to raise production, a Reuters survey found on Friday, although the hike was limited by Iraq making additional cuts and by drone attacks on Kurdish oilfields. 'The balance right now is between Opec not raising production as much as anticipated versus the possibility that there will be a Ukraine ceasefire deal, and Russian oil might start to flow freely. That balance has oil bouncing around like a yo-yo right now,' said Phil Flynn, a senior analyst with Price Futures Group. Elsewhere, an Exxon Mobil-led consortium began crude production four months earlier than expected at a fourth floating production, storage and offloading vessel in Guyana, Exxon said on Friday.
