I'm a Diehard Apple Fan, but This July 4th Offer on the Lenovo Tab Plus Has Me Seriously Reconsidering My iPad Obsession

Yahoo18 hours ago
I've been part of the Apple ecosystem for close to 20 years -- since first buying a MacBook in 2006 and getting a free iPod (remember those?) with my purchase. While these days I do most of my work on a much newer MacBook, I've used an older iPad for travel for a number of years. My teenage son is after a new tablet for himself, and though my instinct is to go back to Apple, this Fourth of July offer on the Lenovo Tab Plus has me seriously considering snapping one up.
Available directly through Lenovo, the Lenovo Tab Plus is down to $220, a $130 discount on the usual price. For that you'll get 8GB of memory and 256GB of storage, great picture quality and excellent sound thanks to built-in JBL speakers.
Hey, did you know? CNET Deals texts are free, easy and save you money.
It turns out I'm not the only Apple devotee with a penchant for Android tablets. Cesar Cadenas, a writer over at CNET's sibling site ZDNet, wrote a favorable review of the Lenovo Tab Plus. Among his many praises, he particularly loved the JBL eight-speaker system, which packs a surprising punch. As someone who usually feels the need for an external speaker or headphones with my iPad, I love the idea of decent sound quality built in.
The Lenovo Tab Plus features an 11.5-inch display, and weighs in at 1.4 pounds. That's pretty lightweight, which makes it ideal for travel. The other tempting feature, beyond that speaker setup, is the integrated kickstand for easy viewing. Ultimately, this device is made for streaming movies, gaming and maybe a bit of e-reading and light internet surfing. As a secondary device to a laptop, it makes a lot of sense. Especially for the teen who keeps borrowing my tablet.
You'll also get a MediaTek Helio G99 processor and an Android 14 operating system, which can be upgraded to Android 16. It's capable of a 1TB of expandable storage capacity if you choose.
Lenovo Tab Plus: $220 (Original price: $350)

The Lenovo Pad Plus offers an elevated tablet experience with a decent-sized screen at an already competitive price of $350. With that price dropped down by more than $100, it places this Android tablet firmly in the running, especially if you're on the hunt for a device for a student.

Jack Dorsey working on Bluetooth messaging app, Bitchat

Block CEO and Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey wrote in an X post on Sunday night that he spent his weekend creating an app called Bitchat (presumably a combination of the words 'bit' and 'chat,' and not the other combination of words that it looks like). Bitchat is a messaging app that operates through Bluetooth mesh networks, allowing users to send messages without Wi-Fi or cell reception. Because of Bluetooth's technical limitations, this kind of app generally only works at a range of around 100 meters, making it useful for situations like finding friends at a busy music festival where cell service is spotty. However, Dorsey claims that his app has an extended range, relaying messages through peers to extend up to 300 meters, or 984 feet. One of the most popular Bluetooth messaging apps, Bridgefy, was notably used during pro-democracy protests in Hong Kong, since its ability to function without the internet makes it harder for Chinese authorities to detect. Both Bridgefy and Bitchat say they are end-to-end encrypted. Coincidentally, Bridgefy is funded in part by another Twitter co-founder, Biz Stone. But Dorsey's newfound foray into developing Bitchat makes sense, given his long-term interests in decentralizing tech — he is a massive proponent of Bitcoin, and he originally founded the project that would become Bluesky while he was CEO of Twitter. Dorsey is no longer affiliated with Bluesky as it operates now. Dorsey opened Bitchat to beta testers via Apple's Testflight, but the test is now full after hitting its 10,000-user maximum. He said on X that the app is still under review before it will be released.

Sabre completes Hospitality Solutions sale

Sabre on Monday completed the $1.1 billion sale of its Hospitality Solutions business to asset-management firm TPG. Sabre will net $960 million in the deal outside of taxes and fees. Sabre president and CEO Kurt Ekert said the deal provides an opportunity to pay down debt and reduce the company's net leverage. In a separate release, Hospitality Solutions under TPG announced its new CEO, Teresa Mackintosh. Mackintosh was most recently CEO, then executive chair, of software company Trintech. Before that, she was president and CEO of Wolters Kluwer Tax and Accounting for the U.S. and a managing director at Thomson Reuters.
