England docked WTC points for slow over-rate in Lord's Test, slip to third in standings
Ben Stokes and Co. were also fined 10 per cent of their match fee after the Test, which they won by 22 runs on Monday.
Match referee Richie Richardson imposed the sanction after England were ruled to be two overs short of the target when time allowances were taken into consideration.
India are fourth in the WTC points table right now.
"In accordance with Article 2. 22 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to minimum over-rate offences, players are fined five per cent of their match fee for every over their side fails to bowl in the allotted time," the ICC said in statement.

Watch: Ben Stokes retires hurt with cramps - can he come to bat again in IND vs ENG 4th Test?
Ben Stokes comes up smiling after taking a tumble while reverse sweeping for four during Day Three of the 4th Test Match vs India at Old Trafford (Photo by) Ben Stokes retired hurt on Day 3 of the crucial fourth Test at Old Trafford, walking off after scoring a gritty 66 as England continued to pile on the pressure against India. The England skipper called time on his innings late in the day, handing over the baton to youngster Jamie Smith. Stokes had played a composed knock, scoring 66 off 116 deliveries, including six boundaries, at a strike rate of 56.90. As he left the field, there were visible signs of discomfort — a slight limp as he walked off and climbed the steps to the dressing room. While the exact nature of the issue remains unclear, supporters will be hoping that it is nothing more than a cramp. Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW! With England in a commanding position and enjoying a hefty first-innings lead, Stokes' decision to retire appeared precautionary. However, with the match still delicately poised in the context of the series, fans and team management alike will be hoping the injury is not serious. — SkyCricket (@SkyCricket) Importantly, under cricket's laws, Stokes is eligible to resume his innings later, should England require him to bat again in their first innings. A similar scenario unfolded earlier in the Test, when India's Rishabh Pant retired hurt on Day 1 before returning to bat the following day — earning a standing ovation from the Old Trafford crowd. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like This Could Be the Best Time to Trade Gold in 5 Years IC Markets Learn More Undo Poll What do you think about Ben Stokes' decision to retire hurt? Ben Stokes Becomes 1st England Captain In 89 Years To...
Last Updated: Stokes picked up 5 wickets for 72 runs in the first innings and then scored 66 runs from 116 balls as a No. 6 batter for the English team on Friday. Ben Stokes is the captain of England's Test team, and on Friday (July 25) he entered his name in the history books by becoming the third English captain to score 50 and take a five-wicket haul in the same match. Stokes picked up five wickets for 72 runs in 24 overs in the first innings of the ongoing India-England Test at Old Trafford in Manchester and then on Friday (July 25) scored 66 runs from 116 balls as a No. 6 batter. Stanley Jackson was the first England Test captain to score a fifty and take a fifer in the same Test. He achieved the feat against Australia in 1905 in Nottingham. In that fixture, Jackson dismissed 5 Aussie batters for 52 runs in 14.5 overs of the first innings and then remained unbeaten on 82 runs in the second innings after coming out to bat at No. 5. In 1936, Gobb Allen, while playing against Australia in Brisbane, also completed the double of 50 and five-wicket haul. He scored 68 runs from 205 balls as the No. 7 batter in the second innings and then finished with figures of 5 for 36 in six overs. During his stay at the crease on Friday, Stokes hammered six fours and added 142 runs for the fifth wicket with Joe Root (150*). view comments First Published: July 25, 2025, 21:49 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. How Many Tests Does Joe Root Need To Beat Sachin Tendulkar's Most Runs Record?
Joe Root has surpassed Dravid, Kallis, and Ponting to become the second-highest run-scorer in Test cricket. How many Tests does he need to go past Sachin Tendulkar? Joe Root is on a record-breaking spree and the biggest record left for him is India great Sachin Tendulkar's for most runs ever in Test cricket — 15,921. On Friday (July 25), he became the second-highest run-scorer in the format with 13380 runs, going past Rahul Dravid (13288), Jaques Kallis (13289), and Ricky Ponting (13378) in the same innings of 121* (201), at Tea in the fourth Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy Test at Old Trafford. The question begs itself — can Root be the one to break Tendulkar's currently 12-year-old record, which many thought would never be touched, which Virat Kohli, Kane Williamson and several other greats couldn't come even close to? If he can, how many Tests would he need to do so and etch him at the top of the world? It's difficult to say exactly, but Root has averaged 89 since the start of 2024, and according to CricViz (a sports analytics company), if he maintains that rate, he will need only 29 more Tests to pass Tendulkar and become the format's leading run scorer. Considering England play at least a dozen Tests every year (they played 17 in 2024), he'd need about two and a half years to reach the feat. To put how quick Root is in context, the 17 Tests in 2024 yielded 1556 runs for him. Of course, this is the best-case scenario. Apart from the difficulty of maintaining a purple patch like this for that significant period, Root would also need to keep himself fit. He's 34 and will turn 35 this December, and though he's fit, it'll become progressively arduous for him to maintain fitness, just like Tendulkar, Kallis, and Ponting also faced. However, Tendulkar played 200 Tests, and Ponting 168, while Root is still at 157. Ponting's prediction for Root's records Earlier in the day, Ponting had tipped Root to break his record. He was also asked about the Englishman's chances of going past Tendulkar. 'There's still a fair bit to go," Ponting told ICC. 'What is he, 35? Doesn't look like his passion for the game is going anywhere. His run-scoring passion has probably gone up over the years. Can he chase down Sachin? Let's see. He might as well do that," he added.
