Aiden Markram urges young batsmen Lhuan-dre Pretorius and Dewald Brevis to seize opportunities in tours to Australia and England, prepping for the 2026 T20 World Cup.
South Africa's T20 captain, Aiden Markram, is keen for the team's young batsmen to seize the opportunity during upcoming limited-overs tours to Australia and England over the next eight weeks. This is a chance for them to further their careers and showcase their international potential.
South Africa has high expectations for Lhuan-dre Pretorius, a powerful teenage hitter, and Dewald Brevis, a prolific 22-year-old run-scorer who first appeared in the Indian Premier League three years ago. These tours are part of their preparation for next year's T20 World Cup.
'The last thing you want to do is to clip their wings. You sort of want to let them fly and let them do their thing," Markram said in a virtual press conference on Friday as South Africa prepared to leave for Australia. The team will play three T20 internationals in Darwin and Cairns later this month.
'I think we've seen on various stages around the world now that they are proper X-factor players and that they have taken to international cricket quite easily," he continued. 'So, I don't know if I have too much advice for them, besides the fact that they must keep taking the game on and not be scared of disappointments or failures.
'It's been great to see their progress. They're going to play a massive role moving forward in cricket in South Africa and that's the thing that we're quite excited about," Markram added.
Both players are included in the squad for three One Day Internationals against Australia following the T20 series.
South Africa will then head to England early next month for three ODIs and three T20s.
'For us as a team it'll be about fine tuning a lot of things and preparing for that T20 World Cup, so a great opportunity in Australia and then followed by England and if we can get closer towards another trophy, that'll be good," Markram told reporters.
South Africa finished as runners-up in the last T20 World Cup in the West Indies a year ago, and Markram was the hero of their World Test Championship win over Australia in June.
The next T20 World Cup will be hosted by India and Sri Lanka in early 2026.

‘The venue has been compromised...': Matthew Hayden recalls scary night IPL was suspended due to IND-PAK conflict

Former Australia cricketer Matthew Hayden recalled the chilling night the IPL 2025 was suspended mid-match due to India-Pakistan tensions. The match between Punjab Kings and Delhi Capitals in Dharamsala was called off after drone attacks in nearby areas. read more Former Australian cricketer and commentator Matthew Hayden has shared his scary experience from the night the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 season was suspended midway due to safety concerns during an India-Pakistan conflict. Speaking on the All Over Bar The Cricket podcast, Hayden revealed that the incident happened when he was travelling from Mumbai to Delhi, and then had to drive 11-12 hours to Dharamsala for the match. It was for the match between the Punjab Kings and the Delhi Capitals. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD By the time Hayden and others reached the venue, they were told the game would go on. But the lights at the stadium started to go off soon after and the match was abandoned with everyone evacuated quickly. 'I'd flown from Mumbai overnight to Delhi because there wasn't a connecting flight with Punjab's home ground (for that game) Dharamsala. Magnificent ground. But by the time I landed in Delhi, there was no airport open,' Hayden said. 'It was at the time that coincided with the incursion of Pakistan back into India and we were talking drones navigating across the skies, taking out ground to air missiles and it was just eerie. We had to take a car via Chandigarh up to Dharamsala. That's a 11 and a half, 12 hour drive. By the time we reached the venue we were told the game was about to proceed,' he added. Hayden reveals what happened on the scary night Things took a strange turn when the stadium lights started going off during the game. While viewers were initially told it was a technical issue, Hayden admitted that the commentators were warned in advance. 'But half an hour before we went on air we were given a security message that if the light towers were to to go out, it's not a technical issue. It's actually a sign that the venue has been compromised and there will be an emergency evacuation response and we will proceed,' he said. 'I was mid-sentence with my usual garbage on air and the first light tower goes out so I've let the spectators and fans know that it has gone out. Then the second goes almost immediately. Next minute security came in like a blanket. Dropped my mic literally mid-sentence and we were ushered out of the ground,' he added. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD A day after the incident, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) officially suspended the IPL for a week. Once tensions between India and Pakistan eased and both sides agreed to a ceasefire, the BCCI confirmed the league would resume with a revised schedule featuring selected venues.

'He Ran From Me!': Dominick Reyes Calls Out Jon Jones' Retirement Games

Reyes accused Jon Jones of ducking him and Aspinall, criticizing Jones' controversial retirement and quick return, tarnishing his legacy and frustrating fans. Former light heavyweight title challenger Dominick Reyes didn't hold back when discussing Jon Jones' controversial retirement drama, accusing the former champion of ducking both him and current interim heavyweight champion Tom Aspinall. The MMA world was left scratching their heads six weeks ago when UFC CEO Dana White announced that Jones had officially stepped away from fighting, vacating his heavyweight title in the process. The move killed the highly anticipated unification bout with Tom Aspinall, who was subsequently promoted to undisputed champion and booked against Ciryl Gane for UFC 321 this October. But Jones' retirement didn't last long. Just weeks later, 'Bones" was back in the UFC testing pool, eyeing a comeback at the historic White House card planned for July 2026. This flip-flopping left fans furious, and Reyes believes it's part of a larger pattern of deceptive behavior. The Frustration Boils Over 'I think because he does this thing that he does, and he just strings everyone along, and he lies, and tells this and says that," Reyes explained during his appearance on the Pound-4-Pound podcast. 'And he's smug about it and arrogant. He's not being genuine. We just want a genuine answer out of you, bro. Not some bullcrap string everybody a long, 'Oh, well, maybe this, uhhhh.' Are you going to fight or not?" The criticism gets personal when Reyes recalls his own experience chasing a rematch after their competitive UFC 247 title fight in 2020. Despite many believing Reyes won that contest, Jones retained his belt by decision. 'I did!" Reyes confirmed when asked about wanting a rematch. 'If you guys don't remember after that fight, I lobbied for the rematch for an entire year and he said, 'Drop the belt' and went to heavyweight. Literally that's what happened. People forget that, too. He ran from me! He said, 'You're not paying me enough to fight that guy. He's too dangerous.' That was literally his response." With Jones' pattern of avoiding dangerous fights becoming clearer, fans are left wondering if the greatest fighter of all time is tarnishing his own legacy through calculated duck-and-dodge tactics. view comments First Published: August 02, 2025, 11:53 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. 'Saw Virat Kohli Crying': Yuzvendra Chahal Makes Stunning Revelation, Shares Untold Story

Veteran Indian cricket team spinner Yuzvendra Chahal revealed that he saw almost every player of the national team, including Virat Kohli, cry after the loss in the 2019 World Cup semi-final against New Zealand. India lost the rain-threatened match by 18 runs on the reserve day after failing to chase a 240-run target. Chahal recently opened up about the difference between Virat and Rohit Sharma when it comes to captaincy and shared untold stories from the Indian cricket team dressing room. 'I love how Rohit bhaiya carries himself on the ground. He's a very good captain. With Virat bhaiya, it's the energy he brings, the same energy every day. It will only go up and never down. Same energy. Every day," Chahal said on the Figuring Out With Raj Shamani podcast. When asked whether he has even seen Virat Kohli crying, he shared the story from 2019. '2019 World Cup, I saw him crying in the bathroom," Chahal said. 'And then I was the last batter, when I was crossing him, he had tears in his eyes. In 2019, I saw everyone crying in the bathroom." Chahal also revealed that he regrets his own performance in the match as he ended up conceding 63 runs in 10 overs while taking just one wicket against New Zealand. 'It was Mahi bhai's last match. I could have done better. I still regret that. I could have pushed myself a bit more, bowled a bit better, and leaked 10-15 fewer runs. But sometimes you are in that flow, it happens so quickly that you don't get time to think. I thought if I was calmer I could have done even better. I gave my best but it was the semi-final, a bigger stage and you have to give your 10-15% extra," he said. Chahal also opened up on his relation with his ex-wife Dhanashree Verma, who is an actor-choreographer, in a recent podcast. Chahal and Dhanashree were granted divorce by the Mumbai family court in March this year, ending their five-year marriage. The duo tied the knot in December 2020 but as per their petition, they separated in June 2022. In February this year, the couple filed a joint petition before the family court seeking divorce by mutual consent. Now, Chahal has revealed that he has not texted or talked to Dhanashree for a long time now. He added that after 2024 T20 World Cup, the couple was left with formal talks only. "I had not seen her for a very long time, and then I saw her on a video call, where the lawyers spoke to us. That's it, no message or anything after that. Before the divorce, we weren't on talking terms for six to seven months. We would talk only if there was something very important; otherwise, nothing. It was like that for a while, but after the T20 World Cup, it started properly," said Chahal.
