A new BHARAT- establishing baseline health parameters for the Indian population

We don't all age the same way, but we all do age. We intuitively recognise frailty when things start to slow down. Ageing unfolds at different rates, over time, between individuals, within and across populations. Often, it happens in bursts.
Ageing is complicated. It is driven by molecular and cellular interactions and is shaped by one's environment, lifestyle, and socioeconomic conditions. This means one's chronological age often doesn't reflect how old one's body really is.
Since researchers discovered in 1935 that ageing can be altered, they have been looking for reliable biological clues, called biomarkers, that in isolation or together can indicate how old our bodies are and how they might respond to factors such as diet, exercise, etc.
Biomarkers of ageing
Last year, the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru, launched a large-scale study called BHARAT, short for 'Biomarkers of Healthy Aging, Resilience, Adversity, and Transitions', as part of its Longevity India Program. The study aims to map the physiological, molecular, and environmental indicators that drive ageing in the Indian population.
'We lack clear information on what features define or influence healthy ageing,' says Deepak Kumar Saini, convener of BHARAT and professor of development biology and genetics at IISc. 'We are building an information portal to understand the rules of healthy ageing in Indians.'
Worldwide, life expectancy has risen significantly over the past few decades. In India it climbed 4.1 years to 67.3 in the first two decades of this century.
Living longer doesn't mean living healthier, however. Studies have predicted a 168% increase in Parkinson's disease cases in India by 2050 and a 200% rise in dementia across low- and middle-income countries. Yet much of what we know about health and disease risk comes from studies in Western populations, which means the diagnostic tools, biomarkers, and even treatments may not be optimal for people in India or other non-Western countries.
Gaps for patients in Global South
This limited focus has created a gap between population-based biomarkers and diagnostic cut-offs for people in the Global South. This can lead to misdiagnosis and treatments that don't reflect how diseases progress or respond to therapeutics in different groups.
'Western values for cholesterol, vitamin D, or B12 may label many Indians as deficient. But are these truly abnormal within our context? Our study aims to answer that. We are not only identifying biomarkers for healthy ageing but also building the Bharat Baseline — a reliable reference for what is normal in the Indian population,' Prof. Saini says.
Earlier this year, researchers from Sichuan, China, reported in Scientific Reports that certain biomarkers for breast cancer, such as high levels of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, could signal an elevated risk in European populations but may serve as supportive indicators in Asians.
'We see differences in inflammatory markers. For instance, C-reactive protein (CRP) levels tend to be elevated in Indians even without acute illness. This inflammation often results from early-life infections, environmental toxins, or chronic nutritional and metabolic issues,' Shawn T. Joseph, senior consultant, head and neck surgical oncology, VPS Lakeshore Hospital in Kochi, says. 'Applying Western CRP cut-offs risks missing early warning signs of cardiovascular or metabolic disease in Indian patients,' he adds.
An India-specific database
BHARAT's goal is to change this. Its database will include genomic biomarkers (like mutations linked to disease susceptibility), proteomic and metabolic indicators (reflecting biological pathways and metabolic health), and environmental and lifestyle factors.
Identifying early warning signs of age-related changes can enable better prediction, intervention, and potentially delay the onset of disease. There is a need for proactive markers of health, indicators that can tell when an organ is functioning below its optimal level, even if it is not yet diseased. For instance, your liver age is more than your chronological age. To do that, researchers must sift through large, many-dimensional datasets and plan to take the help of artificial intelligence (AI) models.
'AI and machine learning are essential to integrate and analyse layered data to see the full picture. It can simulate the impact of interventions and augment existing datasets to improve signal detection that may otherwise be missed in high-dimensional, small-sample studies. This will help us choose the most effective interventions before launching costly trials,' says Tavpritesh Sethi, professor of computational biology at the Indraprastha Institute of Information Technology, Delhi, who is also one of the investigators of BHARAT.
However, if the AI models' training datasets don't reflect local realities, they risk perpetuating health inequities. India's population is genetically, environmentally, and socioeconomically diverse. Capturing this diversity in a single database is crucial but also logistically complex. Prof Saini anticipates a few challenges, including the difficulty of obtaining samples from healthy adults, securing long-term government and philanthropic funding, and expanding the study to collect samples from across the country.

The first-glimpse teaser of Nitesh Tiwari's Ramayana has inspired awe and wonder among fans, with some hailing it as a new dawn in Indian storytelling. A grand adaptation of the timeless Indian epic, the film, featuring a stellar cast of Ranbir Kapoor, Yash and Sai Pallavi and others, brings together some of the best technicians from across the world. The film's mammoth budget (₹800 crore approx) covers the cost of assembling a constellation of global artistes. The title reveal video, which released on July 03, 2025, confirmed the presence of several international legends, with Oscar-winning composer Hans Zimmer being the biggest coup. The makers have described the project as an unprecedented creative communion between the East and the West. Filmed for IMAX, Ramayana is aiming to deliver a visual spectacle high on scale and technically mastery. Set to release in two parts on Diwali 2026 and Diwali 2027 respectively, the film positions itself as a global event, riding the wave of effects-rich crossover blockbusters out of India like RRR and Baahubali. Speaking at the teaser launch in Mumbai, producer Namit Malhotra of Prime Focus Studios reiterated his vision to create a world-class experience. 'It has been a very, very long dream that we have been collaborating to put our hearts, soul and life into this so that we can do justice to this epic,' Malhotra said. 'My only aspiration is with pride how we take our greatest culture, our greatest part of our history and share it with the world.' To this end, here are the various international names bringing this vision to life. DNEG: VFX and animation A top-flight VFX and animation studio, DNEG won its eighth Oscars for its work on Dune: Part Two. A subsidiary of Prime Focus, the studio was praised for producing complex simulations, creature animations and large-scale CG environs. His most recent work, Captain America: Brave New World, was a big-budget superhero smash featuring vast sets including a White House interior replica. A veteran of both film and television, Avery has toiled on sci-fi standards like Minority Report and 10 Cloverfield Lane. More than a hundred years ago, when the capital of British India shifted from Calcutta to Delhi, an important realisation struck Lady Hardinge, the wife of Viceroy Baron Charles Hardinge. Amidst plans for wide roads and stately buildings, there was no space carved out for the ambitions of Indian women in medicine. Determined to change that, she spearheaded the establishment of a medical college exclusively for women — a first in North India. The foundation stone was laid on March 17, 1914, and the college was originally named Queen Mary College and Hospital, in honour of the Queen's visit to India. Sadly, Lady Hardinge passed away before seeing her dream come alive. But her vision endured. When the college officially opened on February 7, 1916, it was renamed Lady Hardinge Medical College, paying tribute to the woman who championed its creation. A modest start with a strong purpose The college began with just 16 students and a single principal, Kate Platt, in what was then the Imperial Delhi Enclave. Its affiliation with the University of the Punjab meant students had to take their final medical exams at King Edward Medical College in Lahore. Her tenure marked the beginning of a faculty legacy that combined rigour with mentorship. Growth beyond the classroom In 1956, the institution expanded with the establishment of the Kalawati Saran Children's Hospital, adding to its clinical and academic strength. The governance of the college also evolved. Initially run by a governing body, it came under the purview of the Board of Administration formed by the central government in 1953. Eventually, in 1978, its management was fully transferred to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare under an Act of Parliament. Today, one of the director professors is appointed as the president of the college, the most senior position within the institution. Opening its gates and growing its reach Though it began as a women-only institution, since 1991, Lady Hardinge Medical College has also been catering to male patients through its teaching hospitals. The MBBS programme currently admits 200 students annually, and its hospitals serve thousands of patients every year. The college runs two major hospitals — Smt. Sucheta Kriplani Hospital, which has 877 beds, and Kalawati Saran Children's Hospital, which houses 350 beds. Together, they offer tertiary-level care and critical exposure for budding medical professionals. A centre of research and public health leadership Beyond clinical care, Lady Hardinge Medical College has also made a mark in medical research. Its Department of Microbiology is globally respected, particularly for its work in salmonella phage typing. It has been designated a WHO Collaborating Centre for Reference and Training in Streptococcal Diseases for the South-East Asia region. The college has also played a significant role in India's public health initiatives. It houses an AIDS surveillance centre and in 2007, it became home to India's first Antiretroviral Therapy (ART) centre for children, a landmark in paediatric HIV care. A vibrant campus rooted in legacy Today, the LHMC campus in central Delhi reflects a blend of heritage and modern infrastructure. It hosts lecture halls, laboratories, an auditorium, a library, sports facilities, and residential hostels. While the buildings have changed and the student strength has grown, the founding spirit of the institution remains intact — to create compassionate, skilled doctors and open doors for women where none existed. One-day workshop on history and computing held

The Department of History at Bengaluru City University (BCU) hosted a one-day workshop on 'History and Computing' on Saturday at the WBC Auditorium for postgraduate students. Inaugurating the event, acting Vice-Chancellor Prof. K.R. Jalaja emphasised the importance of digital technology in making Indian history accessible to younger generations. She affirmed, 'Necessary steps will be taken to ensure PG students have access to digital resources.' Mahesh, deputy director of the Karnataka State Archives, inaugurated the workshop, stating, 'Digitisation not only preserves historical records but also democratises access, making archival materials available to all.' He demonstrated tools used in digital preservation. P. Jayasimha from the Mythic Society noted, 'Digital tools and AI are opening unprecedented avenues in analyzing and preserving historical data.' The event featured thematic sessions by experts and was conducted by faculty members Dr. Malini, Dr. Purushottama, and Dr. Kantharaju. Prof. Jyothi Venkatesh delivered the introductory address.
