Raksha Bandhan 2025: Is Rakhi On August 8 Or 9? Know Exact Date, Shubh Muhurat, Rituals, Significance & Legends Behind Festival

India.com5 days ago
Raksha Bandhan Date and Shubh Muhurat 2025: Raksha Bandhan, also known as Rakhi, is one of the most awaited and beloved festival that celebrates the timeless bond between brothers and sisters. Observed on the full moon day of the Shravana month, it is a symbol of love, protection, and unity. On this day, sisters tie a sacred thread (rakhi) on their brothers' wrists, praying for their well-being, while brothers vow to protect their sisters with lifelong loyalty and affection.
Raksha Bandhan 2025: When is Rakhi This Year?
Mark your calendars, Raksha Bandhan will be celebrated on Saturday, August 9, 2025. This joyous occasion falls on the Purnima (Full Moon Day) of the Shravan month, according to the Hindu lunar calendar. And here's the good news: there is no Bhadra Kaal this year, meaning you can celebrate the festival without timing restrictions or superstitions.
Exact Rakhi Timing & Shubh Muhurat
Raksha Bandhan Thread Ceremony Time:
From 5:47 AM to 1:24 PM
Total Duration: 7 hours 37 minutes
Bhadra Kaal Ends: Before Sunrise
Purnima Tithi:
Begins: August 8, 2025, at 2:12 PM
Ends: August 9, 2025, at 1:24 PM
According to Hindu tradition, the Aparahna period (late afternoon) is the most auspicious for tying Rakhi. If that isn't feasible, the Pradosh Kaal (early evening) is also considered sacred. The absence of Bhadra Kaal makes August 9 perfect for performing all Raksha Bandhan rituals without hesitation.
Raksha Bandhan Rituals: The Sacred Thread of Protection
The Raksha Bandhan ritual is both heartwarming and symbolic. Sisters begin preparations by arranging a puja thali with a rakhi thread, roli, akshat (rice grains), sweets, and a lit diya.
She ties the rakhi on her brother's wrist, performs an aarti, and places a tilak on his forehead. This is more than just a ritual, it's a powerful wish for her brother's protection, happiness, and success.
In return, the brother gives her gifts and promises to protect her through all the ups and downs of life. Many families end the ritual with a delicious festive meal, lots of laughter, and emotional moments that bring everyone closer.
The Significance of Raksha Bandhan in Modern Times
While the festival's roots are deep in Hindu tradition, Raksha Bandhan today has grown beyond religion or blood ties. It's not uncommon for people to tie rakhis to cousins, close friends, or even coworkers, anyone who has earned their trust and love.
It's a reminder that relationships thrive on love, loyalty, and the courage to protect each other. Whether it's a sister promising to support her brother emotionally or a friend tying a rakhi as a symbol of their chosen family, the sentiment remains powerful.
Mythology Behind Raksha Bandhan: The Krishna & Draupadi Legend
One of the most touching legends behind Raksha Bandhan comes from the Mahabharata.
After Lord Krishna killed the cruel King Shishupala, he cut his finger. Draupadi, the wife of the Pandavas, saw his bleeding wound and immediately tore a strip from her saree to bandage it. Krishna, moved by this spontaneous act of care, vowed to protect her.
Years later, when the Kauravas humiliated Draupadi by trying to disrobe her in court, Krishna kept his promise. He miraculously made her saree endless, saving her dignity and fulfilling the silent vow made years ago.
This timeless story captures the essence of Raksha Bandhan, selfless love, loyalty, and protection.
Why Raksha Bandhan 2025 Is Special?
This year's celebration is free of Bhadra, which means no bad timing to worry about. You can plan your family gatherings, gift exchanges, and rituals without restrictions.
Whether you're tying a rakhi to your brother, cousin, friend, or someone who has always stood by you, Raksha Bandhan 2025 promises to be more inclusive and joyful than ever before.
Raksha Bandhan is more than a festival, it's a celebration of protection, affection, and lifelong promises. With no Bhadra to restrict this year's rituals, August 9 is your chance to honour every bond that makes you feel safe, seen, and loved.
So go ahead, tie that rakhi, make that promise, and savour the moments that remind us of the power of connection. Happy Raksha Bandhan!

India Post's rakhi delivery slows down amid tech upgrade, steep couriers step in

Pune: India Post's server-related issues just days before the festival of Raksha Bandhan on Aug 9 have left people across India expressing frustration over undelivered rakhis and delayed bookings at post offices nationwide. Citizens are being forced to spend several times over with private courier services to ensure their parcels reach on time. The problem has persisted since the last few days. Pune resident Sanjay Shirodkar told TOI he was compelled to use a private courier after trying unsuccessfully for several days to book through India Post. "I visited the post office for three days and ultimately sent the rakhi package via courier on Wednesday. The two parcels cost Rs190 each, instead of Speed Post's Rs41 each," he said. India Post booking was either closed or very slow because of server issues and post offices were unbelievably crowded. Pune GPO phone number was not even working, he added. A user reported two urgent parcels being marked as delivered on July 29 and 30, though it was not received, causing "major losses." by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Woman sells ring given by ex, then jeweler tells her 'This can't be true' Daily Sport X Undo Another person complained about a Speed Post item showing no update or movement since Aug 2, describing the situation as "jeopardising businesses." Jharkhand's Sachin Parashar said he booked a Speed Post on July 28 with an expected delivery time of around five days. However, the package remained undelivered even after nine days. "I filed an online complaint on Aug 2 and was told to expect a response in three days — but nothing happened. The booking post office's response was appalling. They failed to provide any update, saying systems are getting upgraded," he told TOI. An X post on Wednesday said: "Poor service at Jaipur's Vaishalinagar post office. I waited for 2.5 hours to send a rakhi, but returned without doing so because the counter got closed." Pune resident Savita Thorat (39) said on Wednesday, "I've been standing in queue at the GPO for over two hours. Officials have said it may take at least another one and half hours more since the server is down. I need to send a rakhi urgently. The delay is stressful." Mukesh Bhoite (52) of Pune said, "I was at the GPO on Tuesday and waited in the queue till 7pm. I've already been waiting for over an hour today. If there's a technical issue, it should be communicated clearly to people. I've been trying to send a rakhi and a gift since Monday." Meanwhile, an official memorandum of Aug 6 from the department of posts announced extended working hours for multi-purpose counter machines till 5pm from Aug 6 to 8 to facilitate smooth postal transactions because of "the anticipated heavy public rush during the rakhi festival period." The Press Information Bureau issued a statement on Wednesday: "India Post has undertaken a nationwide rollout of the advanced postal technology application as part of its digital transformation under IT 2.0 — marking a major step toward delivering faster, smarter and customer-centric services. The first day of rollout on Aug 4 was slow given the scale and complexity of the migration which is spanning over 1.6 lakh post offices. The technical team worked round-the-clock and rectified the slowness by Aug 5," it said. Despite India Post's claims of resolution, customers continued reporting issues on Wednesday and raised questions about the timing of such a major system upgrade during an important festival and the fact that they have had to turn to private courier services. Chetan More, franchise owner, DTDC (Chandannagar), told TOI, "We've seen a 40% increase in clients over the last four to five days. The rush is higher than what we have seen during Raksha Bandhan in the last few years. Most bookings are to send rakhis and gifts." Manoj Yadav, franchise owner of a Delhivery retail courier store, said, "We've had several people come to us in the last few days saying they couldn't send rakhis because of India Post server issues. Client footfall at our store has gone up drastically over the last three to four days compared to a week ago." A senior India Post official told TOI, "The IT 2.0 project has been underway for over a year. There was no specific reason to time it around the festival season — nearly 50% of the upgrade was completed a few days ago. The rollout has been gradual and we've been scaling up operations in phases. Unfortunately, over the last few days, the system slowed down while being implemented across 1.6 lakh post offices nationwide." Despite this, India Post has been booking around 20 lakh articles daily. "On Tuesday, we handled nearly 20 lakh articles and bookings had crossed 15 lakh by Wednesday afternoon. There were intermittent glitches, which are expected in a digital migration of this scale." The official further said, "Delivery may have been delayed because of system-related issues. Postmen rely on a mobile application. In case of technical issues, the instruction is to go ahead with manual delivery and maintain a physical record. However, implementation may vary between post offices."

Registered post ‘retires': Bygone postal era ends silently in bylanes

1 2 3 Bhopal:Among the first post-offices in city, the one at Jumerati was built at the end of the 19th century. If you were to visit this mundanely historical site today, you would have to first cross congested by-lanes where there are no cops to regulate traffic and only good samaritans in the area redirect the flow as vehicles drive on the wrong side. Even when you reach the Jumerati post-office, you might pass by and miss it. But when you do end up at the premises, a nearly deserted office with two employees would greet you. The reason: Postal services that once brought joy and a feeling of being seen by people or institutions, a letter of trust or your passport in a registered post, are fading away; assured and tangible acknowledgement being replaced by instant messages on mobiles and a cold distance in real time. The Indian govt has now decided to merge registered post with speedpost. The decline of physical spaces, letters and posts is evident from the state of the oldest post-office, which could've been a heritage site had things been more offline. The end of this era is pronounced more now with the iconic registered post and its physical acknowledgment increasingly becoming a thing of the past. And when it was announced a few days ago that registered post service will be merged with speedpost, the escalation went up a notch. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Substance Found in Pink Salt has Bariatric Effects on Women Over 50 Health & Family Click Here Undo Geeta Gupta, who was a postmaster 35 years ago at a post office in Datia district, and now lives in Bhopal, toldTOI, "The person sending the registered post received an acknowledgment, which is called AD, from the postman like a postcard, that their post has been delivered. I do not know how much of the practice is still adhered to by post offices now but at our time, the person got the AD without fail," While the hallmark of registered post was once reliability, security and accountability, the process of transitioning the speedpost to online servers in the last few days has ironically been marked by a bumpy start: People in the city stood in long and unending queues for the last few days, with some quarrelling with the staff, as the server fluctuated for hours on end. The situation improved a bit on Wednesdayn at TT Nagar post-office but people could be heard complaining about the server delaying their wait time at the post-office GPO near Gandhi Medical College. A staffer at the GPO said, wishing anonymity, "The timing for this server shift could've been chosen at a better time like April when there are no consumers at the post-office. In the Hindi-belt, the festival of Rakhi is celebrated more so that really created issues at the post-offices in Bhopal," And the registered post didn't only hold sentimental value as it is widely used for legal and official purposes, just ask any experienced lawyer in Bhopal, "I've been using registered post for 28 years now and it used to be a reliable way of presenting the acknowledgement of posts in court as it was also admissible, but for the last 10 years or so, the acknowledgements either do not arrive or the postman doesn't deliver them. This move to merge registered post with speedpost may help practically if there's a provision made to incorporate admissibility because registered post as it is wasn't working that well. Right now, we have to do rounds of the post-office to get confirmation from the postmaster while in an earlier era, acknowledgement from a registered post could be submitted in court directly." said CS Tiwari, a lawyer in Bhopal. Mayank Vijaywergiya, a financial consultant, also uses registered post, "There is uncertainty right now about how it'll be merged and how it'll work but the move could speedily send posts," he said. A local shopkeeper, wishing anonymity, said that registered post is cheaper than speedpost at times so he is concerned if higher costs would have to be paid now.
