FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem nominates Malcolm Wilson for deputy role

The FIA, the global governing body for motor sport and advocacy group for motoring organizations, said on Wednesday that members will vote on the nomination during the federation's Extraordinary General Assemblies and Conference in Macau in June.
Wilson is the managing director of M-Sport, which has operated Ford's World Rally program since 1997. Previously he was a highly successful rally driver, who won the British Rally in 1994. He is an honorary member of the British Racing Drivers Club, and in 2009 he was awarded an OBE for services to motor sport in the Queen's Birthday Honors list.
Under his leadership, M-Sport won the FIA World Rally Championship for Manufacturers in 2006 and 2007 and 2017, and back-to-back driver and co-driver championships in 2017 and 2018. It also served as a technical partner with Bentley Motors, leading the design and development of the Continental GT3 race car, and in electric motor sport with Jaguar in the Ipace eTrophy event.
The deputy president for sport, one of the most senior elected roles within the FIA, serves on the World Motor Sport Council and has a wide range of responsibilities, including development of global motor sport policies in collaboration with FIA commissions and national sporting authorities, and the promotion of safety, sustainability and innovation in the sport.
Ben Sulayem said: 'I am delighted to nominate Malcolm Wilson OBE for the role of FIA deputy president for sport. Malcolm has had a distinguished career in global motor sport.
'For over 40 years he has competed at the highest level, both as a driver and technical partner to teams. This experience will be invaluable to the FIA and our member clubs as we continue to grow grassroots and professional motor sport, driving innovation in the sport to benefit fans, drivers and teams.'
Wilson said: 'Having started my career in motor sport in the 1970s as a driver and then technical partner to teams, it is a great honor to be nominated for the role of FIA deputy president for sport.
'The FIA has played a central role in my career and I very much look forward to supporting the president and all the FIA family in its important mission. There has never been a more exciting time to be in motor sport, and I know first-hand the benefits the sport brings to families and communities across the world.
'I look forward to working with the president for the duration of his current term of office, bringing our sport to new audiences and ensuring we deliver the very best championships for all our competitors.'

Pakistan launches digital land record, passport services for diaspora in UK
ISLAMABAD: In a major development, Islamabad has launched digital land record and passport processing services for Pakistanis living in the United Kingdom (UK), the Pakistani foreign office said on Monday. The development came during a visit to the UK by Pakistani Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar, who inaugurated the landmark initiatives at the Pakistan High Commission in London on Monday. The UK is home to over 1.6 million Pakistanis who have often complained of difficulties in sale, purchase, transfer and settlement of disputes concerning their lands back home, despite contributing significantly to remittances, business and cultural links. The Land Record Service enables British Pakistanis to remotely access and manage property records in Pakistan's most populous Punjab province, according to the foreign office. 'This digital platform offers services such as online sale deeds, 'Fard' (Record of Rights), 'e-Girdawari,' mutation entries and document attestation, all secured by blockchain technology to ensure transparency and prevent fraud,' the foreign office said in a statement. 'A dedicated Land Services Desk at the Pakistan High Commission in London will support the pilot phase, with plans to expand to other Pakistani consulates in the United Kingdom.' Concurrently, the One Window Passport Processing System, implemented by the Directorate General of Immigration and Passports (IMPASS), streamlines passport application procedures by consolidating multiple steps into a single, efficient counter, according to the foreign office. 'This system reduces processing time to approximately 10 minutes per application, enhancing convenience, reducing congestion, and ensuring greater transparency for British Pakistanis,' it said. Dar described the initiatives as 'a digital leap toward safeguarding diaspora rights and fostering investment,' while the foreign office said they marked a significant step toward efficient, transparent and accessible governance for Pakistanis abroad. The Pakistani deputy premier earlier met the UK's Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for the Middle East, Afghanistan and Pakistan, Hamish Falconer, and shared Pakistan's commitment to economic reforms and perspective on regional developments, including peace and stability in South Asia following a military standoff with India in May. 'Both sides reviewed the full spectrum of bilateral relations and reaffirmed their shared commitment to deepening cooperation across political, economic, climate, and people-to-people domains,' the Pakistani foreign office said. The UK is among Pakistan's largest bilateral development partners, with cooperation spanning education, health, climate resilience, governance reform and trade. Dar is on an official visit to the UK since Saturday to strengthen Pakistan-UK ties, boost cooperation in digital technology, artificial intelligence and entrepreneurship, and enhanced cooperation with the Commonwealth. Separately, the deputy premier held a meeting with Pakistani-origin British parliamentarians, Mohammad Yasin, Tahir Ali, Imran Hussain, Ayoub Khan and Adnan Hussain, according to the foreign office. He underscored the deep historical and cultural bonds between Pakistan and the UK and emphasized Pakistan's strong commitment to enhancing bilateral parliamentary exchanges with the United Kingdom. 'He noted that such engagements facilitate the sharing of democratic experiences, international best practices, and core democratic values, which are vital for the growth and stability of democratic institutions in both countries,' the foreign office said.

Court sentences three men to five years in prison amid Pakistan crackdown on illegal currency trade
ISLAMABAD: A Pakistani court has sentenced three men each to five years in prison for running an illegal currency exchange, the Federal Investigation Agency said on Friday, amid a widening crackdown on illegal currency trade. Pakistan authorities have been cracking down on currency smugglers and illegal exchanges since a depreciation in worth of rupee, which fell to a 22-month low of Rs284.97 against the US dollar last month and raised widespread concerns. The crackdown followed a meeting of Maj. Gen. Faisal Naseer, an official of the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI), Pakistan's powerful military-run spy agency, with exchange company representatives in Islamabad on July 22. On Friday, a local court in the southern Pakistani district of Sukkur sentenced three accused, Qamar Shahzad, Muhammad Zeeshan and Zubair Asghar, to five years in prison and imposed a fine of Rs1 million ($3,517) on each, according to the FIA. 'The accused were found involved in illegal currency exchange,' the FIA said, adding it had seized Rs1 million, $20,700 and 147,000 Saudi riyals from the accused persons. 'The court has ordered the deposit of the recovered currency in national kitty.' Pakistan operates a multi-tiered currency market, with rates diverging between the official interbank channel, the open market, and an unregulated 'grey market' where many traders and informal hawala dealers operate. Burdened by over $58 billion in imports in the last fiscal year, Pakistan faces severe inflationary pressure whenever the dollar strengthens. The rupee has lost 2 percent of its value between January and July this year, despite Pakistan's current account recording a surplus of $2.1 billion, according to central bank data. On July 27, the FIA said it had arrested five suspects involved in illegal currency exchange and transfer of money in the southwestern Balochistan province that borders Iran and Afghanistan. Officials seized 684,000 Pakistani rupees, 230.5 million Iranian rials, more than 135,000 Afghanis, 700 US dollars, 200 Saudi riyals and 150 Australian dollars during raids in Balochistan's Quetta and Chaman. 'Cheque books, hawala-hundi receipts and bank deposit slips were also recovered from the suspects,' the FIA said. 'The suspects were involved in currency exchange without a license. They could not give a satisfactory answer to the authorities regarding the recovered currency.'
