Meet actor who returned to Mission Impossible franchise after three decades because Tom Cruise insisted
The final film in the Mission Impossible franchise released in the US on May 23. Ardent fans of the Tom Cruise-led franchise were in for a delightful surprise because they also saw the return of veteran character actor Rolf Saxon in it. This was a major moment because Rolf returned to the big screen to play William Donloe, the same character many might remember as CIA analyst William Donloe in the 1996 film. Rolf appears for a brief time in the 1996 film, but this time in The Final Reckoning, Tom Cruise and director Christopher McQuarrie gifted the actor with a major supporting role. The actor shared that when he first heard of the call that he was being considered for a part in the film, he did not take it seriously because he thought it might be a prank.
Speaking to People, he said, 'I got a phone call in January of '22 saying a European film company was interested in seeing you for a part. I said, 'Okay, they legit?' They said, 'Yeah, we think so.' So we set up a meeting and then they said it was Skydance, Tom Cruise and Mission: Impossible, and I thought, it's a buddy of mine. He's winding me up, he's playing the game.'
But soon the actor realized that this was no game at all, and that Tom Cruise insisted that he come onboard for the film. Talking about working with Tom on the film, he said, 'I was on that for about three weeks. So you know, we weren't bosom buddies, but he's very good on set. He gives a hundred percent. To be back, I got a big hug and a cheer as soon as I walked on the set. So it's great. It was wonderful.'

Rolf is a gold medalist from the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. Known for his work in theatre and Television, he made his film debut in 1980 with Little Lord Fauntleroy, which was an adaptation of Frances Hodgson Burnett's novel.
He also appeared on the TV show Capital City which ran from 1989-90 where he essayed the role of attorney Hudson J. Talbot III. Some of his other notable roles were in films like Tomorrow Never Dies, Saving Private Ryan, Woman in Gold, and August Falls. Rolf is mostly known for his theatre work, in productions like The Seven Year Itch, Dinner with Friends, Chicago, Death and the Maiden, and The Floating Light Bulb among others.

However, the high-octane drama saw a substantial fall in the business during the second week, as it minted only Rs 26.75 crore. It appeared as if the action-packed film might slowly lose its hold over the Indian audience; however, as the third weekend began, the movie started picking up pace. With a rise of 5 percent, on Friday, the movie minted Rs 1.9 crore across all languages in India. And, it wasn't a tough act to follow for the following Saturday and Sunday, as the film collected Rs. 3.65 crore and 3.75 crore respectively. On Monday, on the other hand, which was its day 17, the movie again witnessed a dip and made only Rs. 1.25 crores, bringing the cumulative Indian box office collection of 'Mission Impossible - The Final Reckoning' to an estimated Rs 91.70 crore. 'Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning' occupancy rate on day 17 The Tom Cruise starrer had an overall 12.94% English occupancy on Monday. The footfall during the morning shows was only 6.72%, but by afternoon it rose to 13.70%, and in the evening it went to 14.73%. Further, 16.62%, the evening shows had the best occupancy rate. As far as the Hindi shows are concerned, 9.66% occupancy was noted on June 02, 2025. The statistical pattern is similar to that of English shows, with mornings witnessing the lowest and the nights seeing the highest footfall. Speaking about the Tom Cruise starrer's exclusive second Monday haul, it pulled in Rs 70 lakh net, which can be defined as decent at most and well below what industry insiders, makers, and fans must've preferred. Directed by Christopher McQuarrie, the film is the eighth and final installment in the Mission Impossible series. It welcomes Cruise back as the iconic IMF agent Ethan Hunt, alongside his teammates played by Hayley Atwell, Ving Rhames, Simon Pegg, Henry Czerny, and Angela Bassett. The story revolves around Hunt and co. trying to stop a rogue AI called The Entity from unleashing global chaos. Though the film boasts a reported production budget of USD 300 to USD 400 million, its reception worldwide has been lukewarm. Industry experts are being cautious when quoting its lifetime figure, as it looks like the entry will have a tough time even breaking even at the box office. The aforementioned production cost, for the record, ballooned after schedule delays caused by the SAG-AFTRA strike and the scale of the endeavor, which required filming across locations like the UK, Malta, South Africa, and Norway. Marketing expenses also make up a large chunk of the cost. In India, it looks like franchise fatigue is keeping viewers from flocking to theaters. Competition from another Hollywood release, Final Destination: Bloodlines, could also be hurting MI8's run in the region. In conclusion, Mission: Impossible 8 remains a decent performer in India but misses the blockbuster mark it would have desired. Last month ETimes had reported how the period between April 10 to May 10 has been absolutely a fruitful period for the box office with releases like 'Jaat', 'Kesari 2' and 'Raid 2'. However, the trend has continued to stay all through May with some numbers coming in at the box office. While 'Raid 2' continued to dominate at the screens after releasing on May 1, the momentum continued with 'Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning' which released on May 17 followed by 'Bhool Chuk Maaf' on May 23. Here's a detailed box office analysis of May and these movies: Raid 2 is a HIT 'Raid 2' is now nearing its lifetime run at the box office and the film has collected Rs 168.74 crore till its Day 33 now which is Monday, June 2. Trade analyst Taran Adarsh told ETimes, "Good films will always find an audience. Mission Impossible and Final Destination - one came on Thursday and the Tom Cruise film came on Saturday. Both the films have found an audience, of course Mission Impossible has found a bigger audience. But it's a good sign as people are coming back to theatres." Film trade expert Girish Wankhede opined, "The release of 'Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning' has marked a significant resurgence for Hollywood in India, signaling a potential revival of interest in Hollywood amidst a landscape increasingly dominated by South Indian films. Paramount's strategic decision to debut the film six days ahead of its U.S. release has paid off handsomely, as Indian audiences eagerly anticipated this latest installment of the iconic franchise. It is the highest opening day of a Hollywood film in 2025, surpassing even the much-anticipated 'Captain America: Brave New World.' 'Bhool Chuk Maaf' emerges strong after all the conflict There was a huge conflict around the release of 'Bhool Chuk Maaf' as the makers got into a legal battle with PVR Inox. Eventually, the film didn't release on OTT and hit the theatres on May 23. It had a great opening number on Day 1 owing to the discounted ticket prices, however, it continued to remain decently well even after the opening day. He says, "May 2025 has proven to be an exceptional month for the Indian film industry, showcasing a remarkable blend of Bollywood, South Indian cinema, and Hollywood productions, all of which have achieved impressive box office results. The month kicked off with a blockbuster opening week, highlighted by the film 'Raid 2' which garnered a staggering ₹231 crores worldwide. This film's success set a positive tone for the month, drawing in audiences with its compelling storyline and star-studded cast. Following closely was the Tamil film 'Tourist Family,' which made an impressive mark by raking in around ₹87 crores." He adds, "In addition, the Telugu film 'Hit 3' continued the momentum by achieving a commendable ₹119 crores, further underscoring the strength of regional films in the Indian market. Another Tamil release 'Retro' also made headlines by generating approximately ₹97 crores, demonstrating the diverse tastes of Indian audiences and their willingness to embrace quality storytelling, regardless of the language. " Wankhede continues, "As the month progressed, two major Hollywood franchises debuted in the third week, further enriching the cinematic offerings available to Indian viewers. 'Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning' managed to captivate audiences, amassing around ₹90 crores despite facing limited screen availability. Meanwhile, another Hollywood title, 'Final Destination,' also performed admirably, securing ₹55 crores in its run. Adarsh says, "I'm not considering the dubbed versions but there are three major releases in June - 'Housefull 5', 'Sitaare Zameen Par' and 'Maa'. So, one only hopes that June should be even bigger. We can be optimistic." 'Housefull 5' has really high expectations as it's set to release on June 6. The film stars Akshay Kumar, Abhishek Bachchan, Riteish Deshmukh, Nana Patekar, Sanjay Dutt, Jacqueline Fernandez, Fardeen Khan, Sonam Bajwa, Nargis Fakhri, Johnny Lever among many others. 'Sitaare Zameen Par' is Aamir Khan's big comeback after 'Laal Singh Chaddha' and the hopes from this one are also really high. Meanwhile, Kajol will be seen in a mythological horror film 'Maa' and it's from the house of 'Shaitaan'. The trailer has got a great response. Apar from the new releases, 'Mission Impossible' also continues to spill over in June and will now inch towards the Rs 100 crore mark, thus will contribute to the June numbers as well.
