Magistrate's Court grants exhumation order for 13-year-old Zara Qairina's grave in Sipitang
Lawyers Hamid Ismail and Shahlan Jufri said Magistrate Zuraini Ali Musa allowed the application following a request by the Investigating Officer.
Hamid said the exhumation in Sipitang will be witnessed by Zara's mother, Magistrate Wan Farrah Farizza Wan Ghazali, the State Prosecution Director, two Deputy Public Prosecutors, a forensic expert from Queen Elizabeth Hospital, police, and Sabah Islamic Religious Affairs Department officers.
Zara was laid to rest at Tanjung Hubi Cemetery in Mesapol, Sipitang.
It was reported on Friday that the Attorney-General's Chambers (AGC) has instructed the police to exhume the body of Zara Qairina to facilitate a post-mortem examination.
In a statement, the AGC said it had reviewed the full preliminary investigation report on her death and issued several directives, including the exhumation, to help gather additional information and evidence.
Zara Qairina, 13, died at Queen Elizabeth Hospital here on July 17, a day after being found unconscious and critically injured in a drain near her school dormitory in Papar. — Daily Express

Body of Myanmar ship crewman who fell into Saratok river found, partially eaten by aquatic animals
SARATOK, Aug 11 — The body of a Myanmar crew member who fell into Sungai Krian last Friday has been found at Lubuk Petan, Kampung Kupang, here. The Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) Operations Centre said in a statement that the body of the victim, Thu Htoo Aung, 20, was found in an incomplete state. 'At 12.23pm today, the operation team led by Nasir Drahman received information from villagers who had found a floating body in the Lubuk Petan river,' the statement said. It added that firemen and police personnel brought the body to a nearby jetty for identification. 'Police confirmed that the body was that of the missing crew member. When found, only the lower half of the body, from the waist to the feet, remained, believed to be due to bites from aquatic animals,' it said. The search and rescue operation for the victim was called off at 1.40pm. The victim, who was wearing brown trousers and short rubber boots, was reported to have fallen into the river from the vessel Moi Soon 2, which was moored at Wharf Batu Pekan, Saratok, on August 8, at about 9.30am. — Bernama pic

eHati probe: Police record statements from 95 individuals so far
SEPANG, Aug 11 — Police have recorded statements from five more individuals, bringing the total to 95, in connection with the eHati motivational programme investigation, to date. Selangor police chief Datuk Shazeli Kahar said the five individuals include employees of the motivational programme, staff of the convention centre where the event took place, and programme participants. 'They were called solely to record their statements,' he said, at a press conference, here, today. When asked about the results of the 'piya' water (chocolate drink) linked to the programme, Shazeli said the police were still awaiting the report from the Chemistry Department. On July 16, the police confirmed that nudity occurred during the motivational programme, held last year at a convention centre in Shah Alam, Selangor. Meanwhile, in an unrelated development, Shazeli clarified that the housebreaking case, involving the main witness in the corruption trial of former finance minister Lim Guan Eng is being treated as a criminal matter. He said that there is no evidence linking the housebreaking to the ongoing trial. 'Based on the investigation, the threats received by the victim, such as 'don't make noise' and 'sit quietly,' are typical tactics used by suspects to gain cooperation from victims,' he explained. So far, police have recorded statements from 16 witnesses. No arrests have been made, and the case remains under investigation. On Wednesday, the media reported that the key witness in Lim's corruption trial was attacked by a group of 10 men, who broke into his house. No one will be spared if bullying or criminal conduct found in UTM Palapes cadet's death, says higher education minister
SEMENYIH, Aug 11 — The Ministry of Higher Education (MOHE) has assured that no individual will be protected if investigations into the death of Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) cadet Syamsul Haris Shamsudin uncover elements of bullying or criminal conduct. Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir said the special committee investigating the 22-year-old Reserve Officer Training Unit (Palapes) cadet's death is expected to complete its report soon. 'I have directed UTM to take all necessary measures and fully cooperate with the investigation. There will be no attempt to shield anyone if wrongdoing is found,' he told reporters after visiting Syamsul Haris' mother, Ummu Haiman Bee Daulatgun, at her home here today. Also present was UTM vice-chancellor Prof Dr Mohd Shafry Mohd Rahim. Zambry also noted that priority should be given to expediting the committee's report while ensuring that the family's concerns are addressed. Syamsul Haris, a second-semester Bachelor of Cyber Security student and the eldest of three siblings, died under unclear and suspicious circumstances while undergoing Palapes training at the Army Combat Training Centre (Pulada) in Ulu Tiram, Johor. He began training on July 26, which was scheduled to end on August 3. Earlier, Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin announced the formation of a joint investigation committee comprising the Ministries of Defence, Higher Education and Home Affairs. The family has called for a transparent and fair investigation, including a second autopsy, following allegations by Ummu Haiman Bee that her son's body showed bruises and injuries consistent with physical assault rather than a seizure. 'I want a transparent investigation. There were wounds on his chest, as if he was stabbed or struck with an object. His eyes were bruised. I strongly believe there was foul play, that he was beaten, tortured and assaulted until he died,' she said.
