Facilities 'discriminating' against female jockeys
The jockeys' union says "extended delays" to the upgrades of weighing room facilities is "prolonging discrimination" to female jockeys. In December, it emerged that 80% of British racecourses had missed a deadline to modernise facilities. These included providing additional private changing and shower facilities, communal eating areas and warm-up areas and new communal working areas for valets. The Professional Jockeys Association (PJA) wrote to its members this week saying it had received reports of "sub-standard race day facilities", including mould, flooding and overcrowded changing rooms. Its criticism came as the horse racing industry launched a new workforce strategy, , externalacknowledging the need for a change in "culture" and "a more professional working environment".One of the targets of the Horseracing Industry People Board (HIPB)'s strategy is to "prioritise gender equality" and to "encourage and support our female workforce by removing barriers to remaining in the sport".Other activities will include an anti-sexual misconduct campaign, supporting employers with drug and alcohol testing, and the introduction of an employer quality standard. In 2021, racecourses were set targets to improve weighing room facilities. But just 13 of Britain's 59 racecourses met last October's deadline. The PJA said it had been told that "multiple Jockey Club venues will not commence work until 2028 at the earliest and may not be completed until 2030".It said: "These extended delays, which will prolong the ongoing discrimination faced by our female members, are unacceptable. Your patience and ours is running out and we will continue to fight to bring forward change."We continue to receive reports, videos and photos of sub-standard race day facilities, including flooded shower and valet areas, mould, female overcrowding, electrical safety issues and failure to adhere to BHA (British Horseracing Authority) general instructions."The Racecourse Association (RCA) said it did not recognise 2027 as a new "agreed deadline", and said there were weekly meetings being held by the Weighing Room Development project group to "discuss, and ultimately progress, the development of weighing rooms at racecourses".Caroline Davies, RCA Racecourse Services Director: "The project group's records show that 20 racecourses will have completed the work by the end of 2025, with a further 12 by 2026."As has previously been acknowledged, this multi-million pound development is a significant expenditure for racecourses at a time when resources are stretched over other essential programmes such as enhancing prize money and covering National Insurance increases. As such, a phased approach must be adopted."
Workplace 'not what should be expected in 21st century'
The new workforce strategy has been devised by the Horseracing Industry People Board (HIPB), and will not just cover racecourses but also training yards and stud farms.Julia Tyson, chair of the HIPB, said: "The workplace is not what should be expected in the 21st century.""We expect [the strategy] to deliver more, better-trained people who stay in the industry for longer. So recruit, develop, retain."We expect to improve the workplace culture, we need to move into a more professional working environment, as many sports are doing. One that is based on dignity, respect and inclusion."We expect to deliver a safer, healthier workforce, where people know it is safe to stay in the sport."It is not a series of quick wins. It is a series of linked initiatives addressing both cause and effect."The BHA said: "Our jockeys are elite athletes performing in a professional sporting environment, so the facilities they use should be of an appropriately high standard, and fair and equal for competitors of all genders."The BHA has made its position clear that the onus is on everyone with a stake in the project to upgrade racecourse changing facilities to now make it a reality."In the meantime, interim requirements have been put in place which all racecourses are expected to meet. We would encourage any reports of instances where they are not to be flagged to the BHA"The Jockey Club says it has met the interim standards and is "totally committed" to delivering the "required and important" upgrades at its 15 tracks but the work amounted to millions of pounds and needed to be phased."It is important to stress that separate changing rooms for male and female jockeys already exist at all UK racecourses and these requirements involve upgrading existing facilities," a spokesperson told the Racing Post.

City star thinks Liverpool are not getting 'world-class' player in Florian Wirtz
Liverpool will need to spend a British record transfer fee to complete the signing of Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen, who was once deemed 'not world-class' by a team-mate Manchester City star Ilkay Gundogan believes Florian Wirtz is not ' world -class' yet, as the latter looks likely to join Liverpool in a record transfer fee. The Reds are ready to break the bank for Wirtz this summer, despite so far being unwilling to meet Bayer Leverkusen's £126.4m (€150million) asking price. Liverpool will pay £100m guaranteed to sign Wirtz as they look to close a deal, Mirror Football understands. But they remain locked in talks with the Bundesliga club over add-ons, the structure of the transfer and payments as no agreement is finalised. Wirtz has not yet been given permission to travel for a medical yet and nothing has been arranged. Liverpool submitted a third bid for the Germany international last week that consisted of £100m guaranteed with £14m in add-ons. And although it did not meet Leverkusen's valuation, it was not rejected. Talks have been ongoing between the clubs since it was lodged. Liverpool remain adamant in the talks that they will not pay the £126.5m asking price and are continuing discussions over the total amount of add-ons and how they would be structured. Regardless of how close the deal is to completion, Liverpool will have to break the Premier League 's transfer record for the 22-year-old, who has his heart set on moving to Anfield after turning down approaches from Manchester City and Bayern Munich last month. It is a mammoth sum, especially when considering that Wirtz's Germany team-mate Gundogan stated he is still not a world-class player earlier this year. Gundogan looks set to miss out on being club team-mates with Wirtz too, who would have filled the shoes of Kevin De Bruyne following the Belgian legend's Etihad departure. Gundogan knows Wirtz's game well, having played with both him and Bayern's talented Jamal Musiala for Germany for a number of years. He has a high opinion of both, but thinks that if either want to be recognised as world-class, they will need to join a club capable of winning the Champions League – something Wirtz hopes to accomplish if he joins Liverpool. "They're very close to world class. Maybe they are not yet there but they could be the best in the world in a short amount of time," Gundogan said earlier this year. "I feel like it is just proving themselves a little bit more. They are very young. Jamal has done a bit more than Florian because he played a little more at that high level. "When you want to be on top and admired as the world's best one day, it's necessary to win the Champions League and Jamal has already played a few years in the Champions League but hasn't won it yet. "For Flo, it is the first season with Champions League with Leverkusen. To be there every single year, to try to get to the semis and final and win it at one point is unavoidable to be world class. "Of course, they have the potential and the quality. I played with them for the last two years in the national team and both of them have everything and they prove it with their teams and the national team. They are both great guys and great characters so they will be there at one point." Bayern had previously been favourites to sign Wirtz before Liverpool stole a march on the Bavarians, while City ended their long-running interest in the player for financial reasons. Liverpool, meanwhile, have begun the summer transfer window in strong form with sporting director Richard Hughes already signing Jeremie Frimpong and young goalkeeper Armin Pecsi. Giorgi Mamardashvili will also join Arne Slot 's side, having agreed to move from Valencia last year.

Barca ready to 'go all out' for Luis Diaz after Liverpool contract comments
Colombian winger Luis Diaz could be a surprise departure from Liverpool this summer with Spanish giants Barcelona chasing his services having previously held interest in the former Porto star Luis Diaz's Liverpool future is in considerable doubt with Barcelona set to launch a raid for the winger. The Spanish giants have previously held an interest in the Colombian wideman but their dire financial situation has seen a move shelved. But that could all be set to change over the coming months. Diaz's future at Anfield is far from certain given he has just two years left on his current deal. It leaves Liverpool very few opportunities to earn a considerable amount for his services and it appears Barcelona have a plan in place. According to Mundo Deportivo, the Catalan giants are going 'all out' to sign the former Porto star having abandoned a move for Athletic Bilbao winger Nico Williams. Liverpool are determined to keep Diaz after his standout season last term but Barcelona recognise that stance is completely 'normal' and could change towards the end of the window. The Spaniards believe the Reds might be more inclined to accept later this summer as they attempt to recoup some funds following heavy spending. Liverpool have already spent £35m on Jeremie Frimpong and are expected to break the British transfer record with a move for his former Bayer Leverkusen teammate Florian Wirtz. Meanwhile, Diaz has spoken out on his future and revealed that he has been holding talks with other clubs. Speaking in a Colombia press conference, he said: "We are currently in contact with Liverpool, because we are talking to clubs, and that's normal given the transfer market that's opening. We're trying to arrange what's best for us." He added: 'We're talking to clubs, it's normal in the market and we're looking at what's best for us. I'm waiting to see what happens. I'm very happy at Liverpool, I've always said so. They've welcomed me very well from day one. If they give us a good renewal or I stay there for two years, I'll be happy. Now it's up to them.' Diaz's father has already admitted that it would be a 'dream' for his son to one day represent Barcelona. He said: 'It is true that Luis is a loyal Barcelona supporter and that it would be his dream if he arrived at Barcelona. 'But, until this moment, thank Porto and Liverpool for the welcome with Luis and the way they received him. He is a player who has an easy time earning things because of his way of being, his humility, his work. He gives himself, he is a very disciplined player – thank God. 'If there are chances for Lucho to arrive at Barcelona, he would have no problem. Because it is an elite team and is among the first in the world.' British number one Katie Boulter edges past Ajla Tomljanovic at Queen's
The 28-year-old, who secured a doubles victory alongside compatriot Emma Raducanu on Monday, was broken in her opening game, but found herself in a position to serve for the set after taking a 5-3 advantage. But Tomljanovic immediately broke back, eventually forcing an opening set tiebreak in which she was edged out by an emphatic winner from Boulter. There's no place like home 🏡@katiecboulter kicks off her grass season with a gritty win over Tomljanovic, 7-6(4), 1-6, 6-4!#HSBCChampionships — wta (@WTA) June 10, 2025 Tomljanovic held the first game of the second set before Boulter, who struggled with her first serves, bounced back from a pair of double faults to make it 1-1. The qualifier then seized control, winning five straight games to force a deciding set, and made it six games in a row when she claimed the first game of the third. Boulter began to swing the contest in her favour, breaking Tomljanovic's serve three times to make it 5-4 and, with the Australian serving to stay in it, digging deep to see herself through after nearly two-and-a-half hours. The WTA 500 event marks the first time in 52 years Queen's has hosted women's tennis. 'When I walked out it actually surpassed what I thought it would feel like when I kind of imagined it,' said Boulter, after sealing the win at the newly-christened Andy Murray Arena. 'That was really nice, and it was great to see that there were loads of people here today watching and supporting, and that actually just means a lot to me as a person and a player, and I know it does to a lot of the girls who are here and fighting and working their butts off.' Boulter has sat in the stands here before watching fiancee Alex de Minaur, who was in attendance, and confessed the vice versa initially felt 'weird.' 'I feel like I had a lot of emotions today,' she added. 'I think it's very easy to get caught up in just trying to get your first grass court match, also coming to such an historic venue as well, which holds a lot of purpose and a lot of familiar feelings when I've come here before. 'I'm mostly grateful to be here and to be playing this tournament, and hopefully I can just be here for a bit longer. ' Earlier, Heather Watson set up a second-round meeting with fourth seed and former Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina after upsetting world number 27 Yulia Putintseva, 107 places above her in the rankings, 6-4 6-3. Former British number one Watson won all four of her break points to see off her Kazakh opponent in an hour and 22 minutes.
