World Bank chief Ajay Banga meets UP CM Yogi Adityanath during day-long Lucknow visit
Lucknow (Uttar Pradesh) [India], May 9 (ANI): World Bank President Ajay Banga met Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister in the state's capital on Friday. The World Bank Chief is on day-long visit to Lucknow to attend a host of meetings and events.
Under the vision of CM Yogi Adityanath, the state is moving rapidly towards achieving the target of becoming a USD 1 trillion economy, the Uttar Pradesh government said in a statement announcing the visit of the World Bank chief.
'By becoming synonymous with enterprise, advancement, progress and excellent law and order, Uttar Pradesh has cemented its identity as the 'growth engine of the country',' the statement said.
The interests of global institutions have been increasing and they are wanting to become a partner in this journey, the statement added.
During his one-day visit, Ajay Banga is scheduled to visit Lucknow and neighbouring Barabanki district and participate in various meetings, interactions and programmes.
He will visit the Take Home Ration (THR) plant at Chinhat Block. Later, he is scheduled to visit a beekeeping center in Rajauli, Barabanki and interact with women beekeepers. Later in the evening, he will participate in a reserve program before leaving for Delhi.
On Thursday, the World Bank President Ajay Banga met Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi. According to sources, infrastructure and agriculture were among the key topics on the agenda during their discussion.
Separately, World Bank in a report recenty asserted that the extreme poverty (living on less than USD 2.15 per day) fell from 16.2 percent in 2011-12 to 2.3 percent in 2022-23, lifting 171 million people in India above this line. This in a way is an endorsement of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's poverty reduction claims.
Over the past decade, India has significantly reduced poverty. According to the Poverty & Equity Brief report of World Bank released recently, rural extreme poverty dropped from 18.4 percent to 2.8 percent, and urban from 10.7 percent to 1.1 percent, narrowing the rural-urban gap from 7.7 to 1.7 percentage points--a 16 percent annual decline. Punjab: Paddy MSP hike meagre, says SKM
The Samyukt Kisan Morcha (SKM) has condemned the minimum support price (MSP) that was announced for 14 crops for the current kharif season by the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA), chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on May 28. The government has increased the paddy rate to ₹2,369 per quintal (100 kg) from last year's ₹2,300. In a statement, the SKM mentioned, 'The MSP is not based on Swaminathan Commission's recommendation of C2+50% formula. Had it been implemented, the paddy MSP should have been ₹3,135 per quintal. The average production in India for paddy is 25-30 quintals per acre and the loss due to non-implementation of Swaminathan Commission's recommendation for farmers on one-acre production will be in the range of ₹19,150 to ₹22,980, which is three times higher than ₹6,000 being provided under the PM Kisan Nidhi,' the SKM leaders stated. The C2 formula of calculating the cost of cultivation includes the cost of capital and the rent on the land to give farmers 50% returns. A senior SKM leader, Sukhdev Singh Kokrikalan, said the group and the farmer's organisations across the country were consistently demanding implementation of the C2+50% formula for MSP with guaranteed procurement as promised in the election manifesto of the BJP in the 2014 general election. 'However, the BJP-led Union government under PM Modi has been betraying the farmers for the 12th year by not increasing the MSP using the C2+50% formula,' he said. The SKM added the rate of inflation and the rising prices of fertilisers, seed and other input materials, including petroleum products, and the living cost were much higher than the MSP hike. The SKM has also decided to ensure active participation in a nationwide general strike at tehsil and block level on July 9.

We had a very successful one year of presidency. So while we host the G20, they host the T20. The top twenty terrorists of the world will be found being hosted by the Pakistani state government. It's their stated policy. Right from Osama bin Laden, I don't know how many of you have seen the documentary. You all must go back home and see the documentary on how he was taken out of Pakistan and he was being hidden, actively financed, aided, trained, supported, and hidden from their so-called ally in the US. So they shake hands with you, but they bite you on your back." She recalled how Pakistan's Chief of Army Staff General Asim Munir, had given a speech days before the Pahalgam attack, where he mentioned that there was a huge difference between Hindus and Muslims. She emphasised how Indian Muslims stood by the Indian government and demanded that India give a befitting response to Pakistan. She stated, "A country which came with the idea that it will have a separate with the idea of othering one religion from the other, is continuing to manifest that in many forms, ways. What began, and I tell you why this particular incident has united the entire nation, united everybody across political parties, is because of a speech before Pahalgam happened. A speech where they are now Field Marshal, then their Army Chief explains very categorically that there is a huge difference between Hindus and Muslims and that is exactly what you saw manifestation of it when the terror attacks happened. What he forgot is that over 200 million Muslims in India stood unitedly behind its government and said they should be given a befitting response. What Pakistan has done to the minorities within its nation, they are suffering the consequences of it within their nation. They might keep blaming others, that's not my problem. But the 200 million Muslims stood in solidarity and said, please do not even compare us to your nefarious ways and your terrorist links. We will fight back and we will fight back in solidarity. High Commissioner of India to the UK, Vikram Doraiswami, lauded the role of the Indian community in India-UK ties and how they worked for the UK. He said that Indians and India are seen in the best of images due to the hard work of Indians. He said, "The value that the community of people of Indian origin provides not just to the India-UK relationship, which is immense, but to the United Kingdom itself. Our community has been a pillar of this nation's growth, this nation's achievements, indeed, this nation's successes. People of Indian origin contributed most mightily to the war efforts in the First World War and the Second World War, both materially, in terms of money, and in terms of the fighting men who served and died in the wars against Imperial Germany and thereafter against the Axis powers. "People of Indian origin came here to build this country and rebuild it after the war. People of Indian origin today have occupied offices, including the highest office in this land. They have played for the country, soldiered for the country, earned money for the country and have helped make India a shining name in the United Kingdom. Because of their hard work, Indians and India are seen in the best of image and the community that has come here today is a community that has come on its own. We opened up the portals for registration. We were swamped with over 650 registrations in less than two days on a Sunday evening with great weather. So you can see that people here care about India, they care about the relationship with the UK and they want to be able to contribute to this partnership." Bharatiya Janata Party MP Kangana Ranaut on Sunday urged the West Bengal government to release 22-year-old law student Sharmishta Panoli, who was arrested by Kolkata Police for her alleged communal remarks online. She said that the Mamata Banerjee government should not try to turn West Bengal into 'North Korea". The influencer, who was quite vocal during Operation Sindoor against Pakistan, used strong language against some Bollywood actors for their silence during India's military operation against terrorists on the other side of the border. She deleted the video on May 15 and issued an unconditional apology, however, the Kolkata Police arrested her from Gurugram on Friday based on a complaint. She was sent to 14-day judicial custody. 'Harassing someone in the name of law and order is not good. When someone has apologised and deleted the post, but putting her in prison, torturing her, ending her career, and raising questions on her character is very wrong. This should not happen with any daughter," Kangana told news agency ANI. 'I urge the West Bengal government not to try to make the state into North Korea. Everyone has democratic rights. She has apologised for her indecent remarks. She had said everything in general and today's generation uses such language very normally- both in English and in Hindi. She should be released soon because she is a very young woman. She has her whole career and life ahead of her," the actor added. Notably, North Korea is ruled by Kim Jong Un, a dictator. Since her arrest, the influencer has garnered online support and backing from several leaders, including from the BJP and the Netherlands. The BJP questioned Mamata over the 'quick action" by her police against Panoli ever after her apology and asked if the state police would arrest TMC leaders who made controversial remarks for the Hindu community. 'Sharmistha Panoli, just 22 years old, has been arrested and sent to 14-day judicial custody over a video she had already deleted and publicly apologised for on May 15. There have been no reports of communal unrest linked to her remarks, yet the Kolkata Police is acting with uncharacteristic haste.
