Joao Palhinha to have Tottenham medical ahead of loan move from Bayern Munich

New York Times4 days ago
Joao Palhinha is to have a Tottenham medical in Germany on Friday ahead of a season-long loan move from Bayern Munich.
The deal includes the option to make the transfer permanent for €30million (£25.9m, $34.2m) at the end of the season, and Spurs will cover his wages in full.
The Athletic reported on Thursday that Tottenham were in talks with Bayern over a proposed loan move for Palhinha. The Portuguese midfielder was made available by the German champions this summer, but the Premier League club favoured a loan move over a permanent deal.

Palhinha joined Bayern last summer in a deal worth €51million ($58.3m) following a successful two years at Fulham but he made just 25 appearances for Vincent Kompany's side, of which 10 were starts.
The 30-year-old was often behind Joshua Kimmich, Leon Goretzka, Aleksandar Pavlovic and Konrad Laimer in Kompany's selection, and the German champions have signed another midfielder, Tom Bischof, this summer.
Tottenham and Bayern have already done business this summer, after the north London club signed Mathys Tel permanently, following his loan spell in the second half of 2024-25.
Palhinha was Fulham's player of the season in his debut campaign at Craven Cottage and made 79 appearances in total for the club. Before his move to the Premier League, he had spent the entirety of his senior career in Portugal with Sporting CP and had several loan spells elsewhere.
The Portugal international could become Tottenham's fifth new arrival of the summer. Mohammed Kudus joined Spurs from West Ham United earlier in July in a deal worth £55million ($74.7m), alongside defenders Luka Vuskovic and Kota Takai from Hajduk Split and Kawasaki respectively, while Tel joined permanently from Bayern.
Nottingham Forest midfielder Morgan Gibbs-White was set to undergo a medical to join Tottenham but later signed a new contract at the City Ground.

Former Arsenal midfielder Thomas Partey is due to appear in court today, charged with raping two women. The 32-year-old, who was charged four days after leaving the north London club when his contract expired back in June, faces five counts of rape and one count of sexual assault. He is accused of two counts of rape against one woman and three counts against another. The sexual assault allegation relates to a third woman, the Crown Prosecution Service has said. The alleged offences took place between 2021 and 2022. The Metropolitan Police said it first received reports of an allegation of rape in February 2022. Partey's lawyer Jenny Wiltshire has previously said the Ghanaian "denies all the charges against him" - and looks forward to the chance to "finally clear his name". An Arsenal spokesperson previously said: "The player's contract ended on 30 June. Due to ongoing legal proceedings, the club is unable to comment on the case." Partey made 35 appearances for the Gunners last season, scoring four goals. He is due to appear at Westminster Magistrates' Court.

Arsenal fumble a sale! Gunners rejected by Portuguese giants after asking for €30m for defender Jakub Kiwior

Kiwior linked with Arsenal exit FC Porto eye Gunners defender Put off by €30m price tag Follow GOAL on WhatsApp! 🟢📱 WHAT HAPPENED? According to Portuguese newspaper A Bola, Porto were keen on the Poland international but baulked at Arsenal's €30m (£26m) asking price. Instead, they moved to sign Southampton centre-back and compatriot Jan Bednarek, who joined for £6.5m. THE BIGGER PICTURE Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta is reportedly keen on keeping Kiwior for next season but the player is said to be considering a transfer exit in a bid to get more game time. He has been linked with a Serie A switch but as of now, he remains in the Gunners squad. DID YOU KNOW? The 25-year-old, who can play at centre-back and left-back, has made 68 appearances for Arsenal in all competitions, scoring three goals in the process. But the Pole is very much behind Gabriel Magalhaes and William Saliba in the pecking order and that has been reflected in his 45 starts for the club. WHAT NEXT? It remains to be seen if the former Spezia and Zilina star, who has 35 caps for his country, will still be an Arsenal player when the summer transfer window shuts in a few weeks.

Ekitike and Salah combine for goal in promising sign for Liverpool 🙌

Liverpool beat Athletic Club 4-1 in the first clash of their friendly double header at Anfield today, and the first goal of their second game will have been a welcome slight for Arne Slot and the Reds came via the most reliable and predictable of sources as Mohamed Salah notched yet another Anfield goal, but the real story was Hugo Ekitike who provided the assist. The Frenchman raced down the left, beat his defender before squaring the ball across the box for Salah to take a touch and finish coolly past Unai Simón. Oihan Sancet equalised just before the half hour mark, but the link up play between one of the new boys and the Egyptian king could set the tone for the season.
