Changan becomes first Chinese automaker certified by SGS as an approved witness testing laboratory
Changan Automobile has become the first complete vehicle manufacturer in China to receive 'Approved Witness Testing Laboratory' certification from SGS, one of the world's leading testing, inspection, and certification organizations. The milestone underscores Changan's commitment to meeting international standards as it expands into global markets, including the Middle East. The certification was formally issued at Changan's Intelligent Research Institute, following a rigorous two-month evaluation by SGS experts. The recognition enables Changan to independently conduct overseas certification tests under SGS supervision, streamlining its global compliance process while enhancing product quality assurance. Setting a new benchmark for safety and quality As Changan ramps up its international presence, this certification provides independent validation of its intelligent testing capabilities. For markets like the UAE and Saudi Arabia – where regulatory frameworks are evolving and consumer expectations around technology and safety are high – this milestone signals that Changan vehicles are built to meet global requirements. It also reflects the company's investment in advanced R&D and robust quality controls, as it continues to introduce new energy vehicles (NEVs) and smart mobility solutions to the region. Certification details SGS conducted a detailed review of Changan's Intelligent Research Institute, auditing: • 17 international certification standards • More than 500 internal documents and systems • Four major testing sites and technical infrastructure • 30 engineers and testing personnel Achieving AWTL certification is the result of a highly selective and rigorous process. SGS grants this status only to facilities that demonstrate full compliance with international standards such as ISO/IEC 17025, covering stringent criteria around equipment calibration, testing protocols, engineer competency, and quality management systems. Changan's successful certification followed an intensive two-month audit, reflecting the company's strong internal governance and technical excellence. Even after certification, all testing conducted under the AWTL framework remains subject to SGS oversight, ensuring ongoing adherence to the highest global standards. This recognition stands as a clear marker of Changan's operational maturity and international credibility. Following a comprehensive evaluation, Changan met all international benchmarks and officially received the certificate in July 2025. The achievement allows Changan to execute a wide range of product validation processes independently, with SGS oversight, accelerating time-to-market across key regions. Mr. Xiao, General Manager of Changan Automobile's Middle East and Africa Division, said: 'The SGS certification is a powerful validation of Changan's leadership in intelligent mobility. For our customers and partners in the Middle East, it reinforces our commitment to bringing world-class vehicles that meet the highest safety, quality, and performance standards. As demand grows for smarter, more sustainable transportation across the region, certifications like this ensure we're building on a foundation of trust, technology, and global best practice.' The certification also signals Changan's readiness to meet the demands of regulators, distributors, and consumers in new markets. As the brand scales its NEV offering and intelligent vehicle range across the Middle East, this recognition supports its ambition to deliver innovation with global credibility. Cost excellence critical to driving industrial resilience in UAE
United Arab Emirates – As the UAE accelerates its industrial diversification under Operation 300bn, global professional services firm Alvarez & Marsal (A&M) has released a new whitepaper urging industrial companies to place cost excellence at the heart of their operating model. With growing investment in manufacturing, materials, and downstream processing, the UAE's industrial base is poised for long-term growth. It will also play a key role in delivering national diversification and sustainability targets. However, according to A&M, rapid growth must be matched with disciplined financial planning, transparency, and cost ownership at every level of the organization. The firm notes that adopting structured financial frameworks can help companies seize emerging opportunities and ensure operational excellence as the sector matures. The UAE has already laid strong foundations. Strategic initiatives such as the Make it in the Emirates campaign and the In-Country Value (ICV) program have created a dynamic, investor-friendly environment. With activity accelerating across advanced manufacturing, metals, and energy-linked industries, industrial development is becoming a catalyst for wider economic transformation. 'The UAE's industrial sector is central to the country's economic diversification strategy,' said Alexander Shvets, Managing Director, Infrastructure & Capital Projects - Metals & Mining, Alvarez & Marsal Middle East. 'Building on this momentum with embedded cost visibility and performance tracking will help operators achieve global competitiveness and long-term value creation.' Renat Akimbitov, Managing Director, Infrastructure & Capital Projects – Metals and Mining, Alvarez & Marsal Middle East, added: 'Cost control is not just a finance function - it's an operational discipline. In capital-intensive industries, real-time cost visibility and team capability are what turn strategy into measurable results.' Global Best Practices for Financial Resilience In its latest Middle East report, Optimizing Cost Control in the Industrial Sector, A&M outlines a proactive four-part strategy for mining and industrial companies to strengthen financial resilience: Activity-Based Budgeting: Tying budgets directly to operational drivers for greater accuracy and agility. Real-Time Cost Visibility Platforms: Empowering leaders with digital dashboards to manage costs dynamically. Structured Cost Review Meetings: Ensuring accountability through regular performance tracking. Cost Capability Building: Equipping teams with practical tools and training to foster a cost-conscious culture. The A&M report notes how companies in the region may achieve significant improvements by employing the strategy, including substantive reductions in operating costs and widespread adoption of cost insights in decision-making processes. From Extraction to Industrial Empowerment The UAE's industrial vision extends beyond raw material sourcing. Investments in downstream infrastructure - including smelting, refining, and manufacturing facilities - are reducing import dependency and strengthening industrial self-sufficiency. Meanwhile, mega-projects in logistics, energy, and infrastructure are driving unprecedented demand for cost-efficient, locally produced materials. At the same time, the industry is evolving. Global stakeholders increasingly expect mining operations to demonstrate a capacity to focus on cost discipline and a reliance on local resources, combined with data-led innovation. According to A&M, this presents an opportunity to create a forward-looking, globally respected industry.
