Vaibhav Suryavanshi to be India's Asia Cup surprise? BCCI told to play ‘bold' in squad selection; ‘Don't make him wait'
Having become the youngest ever to earn an IPL contract, Suryavanshi etched his name into record books by becoming the youngest-ever IPL centurion at 14 years when he reached his three-figure mark against Gujarat Titans. He finished his IPL 2025 campaign with a fifty.
In seven matches, Suryavanshi amassed 252 runs at a strike rate of more than 200. That's not all. The left-handed opener continued his impressive form for India U-19 in England, scoring a century en route to their series win. Srikkanth's comments came after he felt Sanju Samson's position is still in doubt following the right-hander's injury in IPL 2025.
"You have to play bold. Don't make him wait. Don't say things like 'let him mature'. He is already playing with remarkable maturity. His shot-making has been on another level. If I were chairman, I would definitely have him in the squad," Srikkanth said in a video on his YouTube show.
Srikkanth, who was a member of the India's 1983 World Cup-winning squad, picked Abhishek Sharma as his first-choice opener, kept Suryavanshi and Sai Sudharsan as his options for the second opener.
"My first-choice opener is Abhishek Sharma, no doubt. I will have two more openers. My picks would be Vaibhav Suryavanshi or Sai Sudharsan, with Shubman Gill as an option. If I were a selector, I would keep Vaibhav in the 15 for the T20 World Cup. He has been outstanding," he added.
"I think it should be Yashasvi Jaiswal, Vaibhav Suryavanshi, and Sai Sudharsan. I would take two out of these three. That would be my preference," said Srikkanth.
As per media reports, India's squad will be announced on August 19 after a selection committee meeting at the BCCI headquarters in Mumbai. Captain Suryakumar Yadav, head coach Gautam Gambhir and BCCI chief selector Ajit Agarkar will be present at the meeting.

Jasprit Bumrah's critics told to ‘open mouth carefully' amid workload debate: ‘There are no stains on him'
Former India cricketer Mohammad Kaif has lashed out at the critics of Jasprit Bumrah and warned them to be careful before saying anything bad about him. Bumrah has been constantly facing the heat since the England tour, where he missed a couple of Tests as part of his workload management. He has drawn criticism from some former cricketers for being selective about the matches he plays. Adding to that, a parallel narrative emerged during the England tour, suggesting India tend to falter in games featuring him, after the team lost both matches in which he featured. India's Jasprit Bumrah hasn't featured in a T20I since the T20 World Cup final.(HT_PRINT) Kaif emphasised Bumrah's ability to change the match on his own and pointed out how many matches he has won for India in the past. 'Open your mouth carefully because you mentioned that whatever matches we played in England, we lost when he (Jasprit Bumrah) played. You better look at how many matches he has played and India won them, go and find out that as well, regardless of the format. When he plays, how many times does he give match-winning performances? Go and find that stat as well. Bumrah is a promising diamond of India. You don't report him. There are no stains on him," Kaif said on his YouTube channel. Also Read - ICC issues clarification after Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli mysteriously vanished from ODI rankings The premier pacer has been recalled into the T20I squad for the Asia Cup, where he will lead the bowling attack in the UAE. 'No problem in bowling 28 overs' Kaif backed Bumrah's role in white-ball cricket, stressing that workload management should not be an issue in the Asia Cup. He argued that the 31-year-old can easily handle 28 overs across the tournament and insisted his match-winning ability makes him indispensable for India in the shortest format. 'I already said that Bumrah might not be seen playing long in Tests, but in white-ball cricket, if India comes in the [Asia Cup] final, then he might play seven games. He will bowl 28 overs, and I am speaking about a two or three-week-long tournament. There is no problem in bowling 28 overs; he will get time to recover. You can rest him in one odd match against Oman or weaker teams. After workload management and a break, he will be used. I think he won't face any issues in bowling four overs. You need Bumrah in T20 because he can change the course of the game with his bowling,' he added.

Ajit Agarkar's comment sparks row as Shreyas Iyer left 'confused' by Asia Cup snub: 'Was a nonsensical statement'
Former India captain Kris Srikkanth has called out incumbent chief selector Ajit Agarkar for leaving Shreyas Iyer out of the squad for the upcoming Asia Cup and for making a 'nonsensical' statement to explain his omission. Shreyas Iyer has not been named in the 15-member squad for Asia Cup 2025 Speaking on his YouTube channel, Srikkanth — a former chief selector himself — admitted he was utterly baffled by the team management's decision to exclude Iyer from the T20I tournament despite his recent white-ball form, which includes strong performances in the Champions Trophy and the IPL. When asked about the decision to omit the Punjab Kings captain during Tuesday's press conference, Agarkar outlined the challenges of selection. He even countered by asking who Iyer could have replaced in the side, before admitting that there was no fault in the batter's performances. 'With regard to Shreyas, who can he replace? No fault of his, nor is it ours. At the moment, you can only pick 15,' Agarkar said. Not only was Iyer left out of the 15-member squad, he also failed to find a place in the standby list, further fuelling criticism over his omission. 'On current form, Shreyas Iyer is an automatic choice. Let's be very clear. You need to look at recent matches; there's no point judging a player by form from a year ago. He scored 600 runs in the IPL at a strike rate of 175. Strike rate is the most important factor here,' Srikkanth said. 'He has been brilliant. Yet you have left him out. You've confused him now,' he added. 'For a player who has performed so well, you are saying: 'tell me who he will replace in the side'. I cannot understand this statement. It's a nonsensical statement from Agarkar. Totally nonsensical. I don't agree with him.' 'I cannot understand the logic' Srikkanth also questioned the inclusion of Sanju Samson in the squad, pointing to his IPL 2025 numbers — 285 runs at a strike rate of 140. The former opener argued that Iyer was a better fit compared to the wicketkeeper-batter. 'You can accommodate Shivam Dube, Rinku Singh and Sanju Samson, but there's no place for Shreyas Iyer. What is this statement? I cannot understand the logic behind this. There's no logic at all,' he said.

Now, Gill's a smash hit with brands
Gill MUMBAI: Indian cricket's latest blue-eyed boy, Shubman Gill , is the new favourite with brands. His stellar performance in the India-England Test series, both as captain and batsman, had already bolstered his brand value. Now, Gill's selection for the Asia Cup as vice-captain will only give further impetus to his brand equity. A Gen Z with much of his career ahead of him, Gill has all the chops a brand looks for. "Gill's brand value has appreciated by 30%-40% post the India-England series. His brand fees will increase anywhere in the range of 25%-50% depending on the kind of brand approaching him," Neeraj Jha, senior sports analyst and commentator, told TOI. From automobiles to global luxury brands, queries for Gill have shot up from an average of three to four per month to about 10-15 now, sources aware of discussions said. Gill currently charges endorsement fees in the range of Rs 4-5 crore for one brand per year. That can now easily go up to anywhere between Rs 6-8 crore, said Neerav Tomar, managing director and CEO at IOS Sports. Another analyst said that a few of his earlier deals were in the range of Rs 2-Rs 3.5 crore. "Gill already endorses close to 20 brands, and this number should go up. Youthful brands will seek new faces. Gill is the new Virat Kohli ," Tomar said. Gill's team, however, declined to comment. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like TV providers are furious: this gadget gives you access to all channels Techno Mag Learn More Undo The cricketer bagged a few big deals before the Test series. Tyre major MRF and global eyewear brand Oakley (for India) signed Gill as their brand ambassadors. Gill also expanded his associations with Casio and Coca-Cola during the year. From about eight brand associations in 2023, Gill's brand portfolio nearly doubled to 16 in 2025. The cricketer is estimated to have earned about Rs 40 crore in endorsement earnings in 2024. "A lot of MNCs are looking to sign Gill. Small brands can't afford him. His fees will only go up if he keeps on delivering," said Amitesh Shah, founder and CEO at sports, media, and entertainment company Legaxy, who estimates Gill's brand value to see a boost of over 40%. Sources said that Gill is "selective" about his brand partnerships, ensuring alignment with his values and career journey. Going ahead, perenniality (ability to deliver across all cricket formats) will be key for Gill to bag big brand deals, said Sandeep Goyal, chairman at Redifussion. "Perenniality leads to continued visibility, which is key to the endorsement game," said Goyal.
