Four South African nature escapes that feel like New Zealand

South Africa and New Zealand sit on opposite sides of the planet, but they share a rare quality: wildly diverse landscapes packed into compact areas. For South Africans craving the dramatic peaks, emerald valleys, and crisp air of New Zealand – without the long-haul flight – these local escapes come remarkably close.
New Zealand's Southern Alps are famous for their jagged ridgelines and alpine trails. South Africa's Drakensberg range offers similar drama. Towering basalt cliffs, misty peaks, and winding hikes through indigenous forest make this a high-altitude escape with serious Kiwi vibes. Cathedral Peak and the Amphitheatre in Royal Natal National Park echo the cinematic beauty of Fiordland.

This lush, misty region could easily be mistaken for New Zealand's North Island. Rolling hills draped in afro-montane forest, hidden waterfalls, and cool, wet weather make Magoebaskloof feel worlds away from the dry bushveld most associate with South Africa. It has a similar charm to Rotorua or the Coromandel Peninsula – just swap geothermal springs for fern-covered ravines.

Perched high in the Amathole Mountains, Hogsback is a forested hideaway full of Tolkien-esque wonder. With its mossy paths, waterfalls, and dense woodland, it's reminiscent of New Zealand's Fiordland forests or the mystical trails of the South Island. Local legend says it inspired Tolkien's Middle-earth, and walking its paths, you won't doubt it.

For something that mirrors the rugged, open spaces of New Zealand's South Island high country, the Cederberg hits the mark. Stark rock formations, clear mountain pools, and star-strewn skies evoke the feeling of tramping through Otago or Canterbury. There's a raw, remote beauty here that satisfies the urge to roam wild.

Tourism Month: Reminding South Africa that local travel is lekker

September 2025 marks the start of the annual Tourism Month, and this year's theme is 'Tourism and Sustainable Transformation'. Encouraging community, eco-friendliness, sustainable business, and more, Tourism Month is set to hold up a mirror showing us what we already have right here on our doorstep. This month will celebrate and shine a spotlight on sustainability not only within our communities but also in our natural environment. Tourism Month was here last year and the year before; in fact, it's been here since 2007. According to ATTA Travel, it first launched in Qunu, Eastern Cape, at the Nelson Mandela Museum, and the theme then was 'Tourism opens doors for women'. While it may seem like just another annual event evoking mixed responses from South Africans, it nonetheless seeks to support what our country so proudly stands for, which is keeping it local, and as the saying goes, 'lekker'. The media launch for Tourism Month was on 13 August at Sakhumzi Restaurant at Zoo Lake in Johannesburg and was opened by Tourism Minister Patricia de Lille. In an interview with SABC News , de Lille shared about the importance of economic growth and diversifying tourism offerings by focusing on 'hidden gems', the smaller towns and townships, which will attract a wider variety of tourists. It also moves beyond the more 'iconic' experiences like safaris, for example, as de Lille shared in the interview. Thandubuhle Mgudlwa, the CEO of the Johannesburg Tourism Company, shared more about the 'hidden treasures' in Johannesburg and repackaging and promoting them to 'gain a competitive edge'. Additionally, focusing on the 'identity' of the city and what it's known for, for example, mining, transport, business, heritage, lifestyle, among others, to attract tourism and get ahead of competitors. Tourism Month will reportedly come full circle on World Tourism Day on 27 September, where it all began almost 30 years ago in the Eastern Cape. Various events are planned to take place to showcase our country, from sports to cultural events. Let us know by leaving a comment below, or send a WhatsApp to 060 011 021 11. Muizenberg beachfront upgrades: Key parking area reopens

The City of Cape Town's Coastal Management branch has announced that the eastern parking area in front of the Muizenberg Civic Centre is now open to the public. While some minor works are still underway, the parking facility is ready for use, making access to the beachfront easier for residents and visitors. The reopening forms part of a broader refurbishment project along the Muizenberg beachfront. This multi-phase upgrade includes significant improvements to public amenities as well as the replacement of ageing seawalls. Alderman Eddie Andrews, the City's Deputy Mayor and Mayoral Committee Member for Spatial Planning and Environment, has happily welcomed the progress. 'We know how important the parking areas are at this very popular beachfront, and I'm delighted to let the public know that the eastern parking area in front of the Muizenberg Civic Centre, on the beachside, is open for use.' Alderman Andrews said. 'Visitors will enjoy the newly paved area and improvements, though soft landscaping and final touches are still to follow.' he added. Work across the beachfront area has faced some delays due to heavy rain, but the project remains on track. The first phase, which began in February 2025, focuses on the western side of Surfer's Corner near the railway line, where an informal gravel lot is being upgraded into a formal parking area. That site remains closed for now. The City has also confirmed that the St James Walkway is expected to reopen in time for the festive season, adding another attraction for holidaymakers.
