‘Fight fire with fire': California to conduct redistricting to counter Trump Texas ‘power grab'
US President Donald trump wants to secure the Republican majority ahead of the November 2026 mid-term elections.

California Governor Gavin Newsom led a campaign-style rally on Thursday for a redistricting plan to foil what he called US President Donald Trump's bid to rig the next congressional race and cement his Republican House majority by redrawing the political map of Texas.
Newsom said his proposal, aimed for a special ballot on 4 November, would create five new Democratic US congressional seats in California, offsetting any seats Republicans can gain at Trump's behest by redrawing district lines in Texas less than four years after they were last revamped.
'Donald Trump, you have poked the bear and we will punch back,' Newsom said, alluding to the grizzly that adorns California's state flag.
'We're going to fight fire with fire.'
The competing plans in California and Texas come ahead of the November 2026 mid-term elections, when Democrats are hoping to win back control of the US House of Representatives.

While Democratic elected officials and labour union executives gathered inside an auditorium of the Democracy Center in downtown Los Angeles on Thursday, at least two dozen armed federal border agents wearing riot helmets and balaclava masks milled about a street corner outside the building.
The governor called attention to the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents in his remarks, suggesting their presence was an attempt by Trump at intimidation.

The agents left the scene within 30 minutes of arriving.
Newsom's rally marked a potentially pivotal moment in Texas, where Republicans who control the state legislature neared the end of a special session that Republican Governor Greg Abbott had called to adopt a redistricting plan aimed at flipping five Democratic seats in the US House in next year's elections.
Republicans now hold a narrow 219-212 majority in the House.
To prevent passage of the plan, more than 50 Democratic Texas lawmakers have fled the state capital in Austin and taken up temporary residence in various Democratic-led states, including California, thus denying Texas Republicans a legislative quorum.
The 30-day special session was to conclude on Friday, though Abbott was vowing an extension.
It was unclear whether the redistricting moves by California Democrats would be enough to persuade the Texas Democrats to end their walkout.

Former US president Barack Obama and his former attorney general Eric Holder addressed Texas House Democrats in a video conference call on Thursday, lauding their efforts to fight what they called an attempted 'power grab' by Republicans.
Abbott and other Texas Republican leaders have steadily increased pressure on the state's Democratic lawmakers to return, threatening them with civil arrest warrants, fines, garnished salaries and ouster from the legislature.

Newsom and other elected Democratic officials who spoke at the rally, along with leaders of several of California's biggest labour unions, all framed their campaign as a battle to preserve democracy and the rule of law in the face of a president with autocratic leanings unchecked by his own party in Congress.
The governor voiced confidence that both houses of California's state legislature would muster the two-thirds majority required to place the newly drawn maps before voters, in a special election to be held 4 November.

Zelenskiy's garb at that February meeting featured in a disastrous session with Trump in which the two leaders bickered and the Ukrainian president was escorted out of the White House early, without lunch. On Monday, with his country facing pressure to accept a peace deal to end Europe's deadliest war in 80 years, Zelenskiy showed up for his talks with Trump wearing more formal attire. The black-on-black ensemble, sans tie, wasn't exactly a suit, but it seemed to please Trump all the same. A reporter who had asked Zelenskiy in February why he was not wearing a suit complimented the Ukraine leader on the attire he chose for his latest Oval Office session with Trump. "You look fabulous in that suit," the reporter said. Trump chimed in: "I said the same thing." This time, Zelenskiy got in a good-natured dig. "You're wearing the same suit," he told the reporter, drawing laughter. "I changed." The media-savvy Ukrainian leader had worn military-type outfits to show solidarity with the troops fighting Russian invaders since Moscow's 2022 full-scale invasion. But after the February meeting with Trump, Zelenskiy switched to a more formal wardrobe. When the two leaders met at Pope Francis's funeral in Rome in April, the Ukrainian president wore a heavy black field jacket and black shirt buttoned to the collar, with no tie. The negative focus on Zelenskiy's attire at the White House was widely criticized at the time by Ukrainians, who have largely rallied around their leader since Moscow's invasion. Trump wants to change voting. The Constitution was designed to protect it from people like him
President Donald Trump has big plans for redesigning the way states hold elections ahead of the 2026 midterms, calling for a nationwide end to mail-in ballots and voting machines on Monday. The U.S. Constitution stands in his way. In a new post on his social network Truth Social, Trump wrote that he was 'going to lead a movement to get rid of MAIL-IN BALLOTS' as well as voting machines, which he called 'Highly 'Inaccurate'' and 'Seriously Controversial.' 'ELECTIONS CAN NEVER BE HONEST WITH MAIL IN BALLOTS/VOTING, and everybody, IN PARTICULAR THE DEMOCRATS, KNOWS THIS,' Trump wrote without providing evidence supporting his claims. Presidents aren't given power over state election law. The 'Elections Clause' in Article I Section 4, leaves 'the times, places, and manner of holding elections' for the U.S. House and Senate up to the states, and only Congress is given power 'make or alter' these rules. Eight states and Washington, D.C., allow for all-mail-in elections, and an additional 15 states allow for mail-in elections in some circumstances and jurisdictions, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures. Hollow legal ground Trump's apparent legal argument for having the power to end mail-in voting as president, as laid out in his post, is that states are 'merely an 'agent'' for the federal government in counting and tabulating votes, and the president is the ultimate authority of the federal government. 'They must do what the Federal Government, as represented by the President of the United States, tells them,' Trump wrote. Like his push for Texas to adopt new congressional districts that are gerrymandered to help Republicans, Trump's latest election proposals are about letting the president decide policy that's actually left up to the states, and giving the executive branch power to shape the legislative branch that was designed to act as one of its checks. Rather than a separation of powers, it's a consolidation.

He's worked at Vox since the site's launch in 2014, and before that, he worked as a research assistant at the New Yorker's Washington, DC, bureau. Goodbye MSBNC, and hello 'MS NOW.' In an announcement that has triggered widespread befuddlement and mockery, the progressive cable news network is getting rebranded. The new name isn't meant to call to mind Microsoft or the honorific 'Ms.' Instead, in the style of congressional bill-naming, MS NOW is purportedly an acronym for the following mouthful: 'My Source for News, Opinion, and the World.' Underneath this seemingly silly story, though, are currents of major change — and fear — in the mainstream media. Because both MSNBC and its fellow political news network CNN are meeting the same fate; they're being jettisoned by the big corporate bethemoths that currently own them. Those corporate behemoths — Comcast owns MSNBC, while Warner Bros. owns CNN — have legitimate business reasons for making this change. Each is offloading these political news channels, as well as various other cable networks, to a new separate company, called by some a 'SpinCo' (spin-off company) and by others a 'ShitCo' (no explanation needed). This is because cable news is viewed as a declining business. Yet there's another clear implication. President Donald Trump loathes both MSNBC and CNN, and his administration has been willing and eager to wage personal and political vendettas against their corporate owners. Take, for instance, how Paramount had to grovel before Trump because he was annoyed at Paramount-owned CBS. The Federal Communications Commission held up Paramount's merger deal until the company agreed to pay a $16 million settlement in a bogus lawsuit Trump had brought against 60 Minutes. So now, with these spinoffs, Comcast and Warner Bros. will no longer have to worry about being punished by the federal government for MSNBC and CNN's coverage. To be clear: Comcast's spin-off of MSNBC and other cable properties was already in the works before Trump won his second term. And there's obviously no political motivation behind Comcast ditching its other cable properties, like the USA Network, SYFY, Oxygen, the Golf Channel, CNBC, and E! (Comcast is keeping NBC News and Universal Studios.) But since Trump began his second term, the company's thinking has apparently evolved on one point: whether MSNBC can keep its name. Back in January, the new CEO of MSNBC's SpinCo, Mark Lazarus, said that MSNBC would keep its name after the spin-off. So the announcement Monday of the new MS NOW name was a change of plan. This would, of course, create more obvious distance between whatever 'MS NOW' is up to and the existing NBC media empire. CNBC, in contrast, will get to keep its name despite being spun off. We don't know whether that's because they're less likely to displease Trump, less likely to cause problems for NBC's brand, or some other reason. What we do know is that, this year, Trump has normalized the weaponization of the government against corporations who have displeased him with shocking speed. For now, at least, this has to be part of companies' strategic calculations. Placating the president is the new cost of doing business in the United States of America.
