Indian court slams influencer after 71 suffer reactions to homemade hair oil

Independent16-05-2025

An Indian influencer has been denied bail by a state high court after more than 70 people allegedly developed eye infections linked to a homemade hair oil he promoted.
The incident in question took place on 16 March at an unauthorised hair treatment camp in Sangrur city, located in the northwestern state of Punjab. Amandeep Singh, who had over 85,000 followers on social media and owns a salon in Sangrur, is accused of claiming his homemade oil could treat baldness, and applying it on attendees.
The attendees were told to wash off the oil after 10-15 minutes as part of the treatment, after which they began to feel a burning sensation in their eyes, as well as redness and swelling on their faces, according to The Times of India.
The oil was being sold for Rs 1,300 (£11.42).
Local media spoke to several doctors in the area, who confirmed treating patients who had attended the camp the next day with these symptoms and diagnosed them as having contact dermatitis. A week later, it was confirmed that a total of 71 people, of the 500 who attended, had adverse effects from the oil.
Doctors also reportedly said that if the oil had affected the cornea, victims could have lost their vision.
The police confirmed that no permission had been granted for the camp.
In court on 12 May, Mr Singh's counsel argued that the influencer had applied for a patent for his oil and the reactions were because the victims did not apply it correctly. He added that Mr Singh worked as a hairstylist and was trying to help people suffering from hair loss.
Denying him anticipatory bail, the Punjab and Haryana high court came down heavily on influencers peddling unverified and untested products, saying: 'This is yet another unfortunate example of internet-famous, unqualified quacks taking advantage of the common man's insecurities.'
'In a bid to meet fickle societal standards of beauty, vulnerable people go to extreme lengths and even undergo risky procedures. The constant pressure to look a certain way often has a deleterious effect on the mental health of children and adults alike,' the high court observed in its order, according to Live Law.
'In fact, in this day and age where social media and marketing agendas so deeply affect one's self-esteem, we, as a society, must endeavour to promote authenticity over curated perfection.
'Advertising tall, misleading claims without scientific backing must be condemned.'
Mr Singh is reportedly absconding, and one of his associates has been arrested, according to the Hindustan Times.

TikTok star Sopha Dopha reveals shock new look after surgery: 'Feels like I've been hit by a bus'

Sopha Dopha, real name Sophia Begg, revealed a shock new look on Thursday after going in for surgery on her mouth. The TikTok star, 21, posted photos and videos to her social media accounts, documenting the process of having her four wisdom teeth removed. However, the influencer appeared to have some uncomfortable side-effects following the gruelling procedure, including very severe swelling around her jaw. Sopha posted a lengthy video of her experience, in which she shared footage of herself crying after she was given strong pain medication before the procedure. Sopha cuddled up with her mother at the dentist, saying she was anxious and the drugs she was given 'made my legs shake uncontrollably'. From A-list scandals and red carpet mishaps to exclusive pictures and viral moments, subscribe to the. 'Mum had to lay on them to keep them still,' she added. 'Around five minutes in, I had my first ever panic attack. I think it was from all the adrenaline and all of a sudden I couldn't read because of the medication. 'They calmed me down quickly and then kept going with the procedure. I blasted music through my sound proof headphones and 30 minutes later, I was done. 'I was super upset and just so out of it from the drugs. I was pretty traumatised from my body shaking and my mini panic attack.' Sopha went on to say her mother drove her back home where she had the 'scary' experience of trying to swallow her first round of antibiotics. Footage saw her tipping her head back as she struggled to get down several pills. The influencer tried to keep her recovery as relaxing as possible as she stayed in bed icing her face while watching Modern Family with her boyfriend Simon Collis. It took another six hours before Sopha attempted to eat, saying she was 'scared' of doing something wrong and had to call her doctor for advice. Eventually, Sopha showed footage of herself eating small amounts of yoghurt from a satchel she could squeeze onto the back of her tongue to avoid her teeth. Sopha then said the following morning was the worst as she 'woke up with my head throbbing' at about 6am because she was 'overdue' on her pain medication. 'I think I got three hours of sleep all broken up,' she said. Sopha later shared selfies to Instagram, showing her jaw had swollen to twice its size as she attempted to use an iced chin strap to make it go down. 'Not in any severe pain just extreme discomfort and my face is super sore, feels like I've been hit by a bus and I can't eat anything besides yoghurt,' she said. Sopha's dental surgery comes just a week after she led a group of models in a very eye-catching launch for Léays lingerie last Wednesday. The influencer and her scantily clad colleagues strutted their stuff alongside Sydney Harbour at sunset, while dressed only in very revealing underwear. Sophia had tourists' heads spinning as she strolled along in a lacy pink bra and matching panties. The barely-there outfit was complimented by garters and stockings and was originally covered up under a black coat. Also in the unusual fashion parade was model Montana Cox who left little to the imagination in a black lace bra and camisole that was largely sheer. The stunner added a pair of see through socks worn with black heels and had a leather jacket hanging off her arms. Montana carried a giant paper bag that was emblazoned with the bag's logo as she walked along the busy tourist strip. The models gathered together to pose for a series of photos with the Harbour Bridge as their backdrop.

IPL's Bengaluru pledge financial aid for victims of crowd surge

BENGALURU, India, June 5 (Reuters) - Indian Premier League franchise Royal Challengers Bengaluru have pledged one million Indian rupees ($11,654) to each family of the 11 fans who died in a crowd surge outside the team's home stadium on Wednesday during celebrations following their maiden IPL title. The franchise will also launch a support fund for the injured. At least 11 people died and 47 were injured in the crowd surge as thousands of people lined the streets around the Chinnaswamy Stadium as the team's bus arrived. Bengaluru were celebrating their win over Punjab Kings in the final of the IPL's 18th edition, the world's richest T20 cricket league. The team had given away free passes for the event on their website but said that numbers would be limited. As the celebrations continued, some fans without passes tried to push through the gates while others climbed trees and the stadium wall for a better view. Images from the scene showed people climbing over each other. "The unfortunate incident in Bengaluru yesterday has caused a lot of anguish and pain to the RCB family," the team said in a statement on Thursday. "As a mark of respect and a gesture of solidarity, RCB has announced a financial support of 10 lakh (one million) Indian Rupees to each of the 11 families of the deceased. "In addition, a fund called RCB Cares is also being created to support fans injured in this tragic incident." Karnataka State Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, who uses only one name, said the venue could not handle the size of the crowd, adding that the stadium's capacity was 35,000 but 200,000 to 300,000 people had turned up for the celebrations. "In the wake of the tragic stampede during RCB's victory celebrations, the Karnataka Government will bear the full medical expenses of all those injured, whether admitted in government or private hospitals," Siddaramaiah said in a statement on Thursday. "Orders have been issued to the Health Department and Suvarna Arogya Suraksha Trust (SAST) to ensure this without delay." ($1 = 85.8010 Indian rupees)

England reveal Jofra Archer comeback plan ahead of India series

Jofra Archer is primed to make his return to Test cricket in the second encounter with India at Edgbaston next month – provided the Sussex seamer proves his fitness in the County Championship. Archer has not played first-class cricket of any kind since 2021 due to a series of injury issues, and was not considered for England selection for the first Test at Headingley as he works his way back from a broken thumb suffered at the Indian Premier League (IPL). The 30-year-old looks set to bolster England's options in Birmingham should he come through Sussex's clash with Durham, which begins on 23 June. Archer has featured regularly in England's white-ball sides over the last few years having made an eye-catching start to life in international cricket in the World Cup win and Ashes series in 2019. His possible return would come as a significant boost for England with their seam stocks hit by a hamstring injury to Gus Atkinson, who is expected to miss the first two Tests against India. "Jof's trucking along really well actually," said Luke Wright, the England selector and a former Sussex teammate of Archer's. "The plan is for him to play a few second team games, loading up in the second team for Sussex. And then the idea for him is to play for Sussex against Durham during the first Test. So he'll play for Sussex if all things go well, and then if all things go well fingers crossed he should be available for the second Test. "Like anything with all these bowlers, he's got to keep ticking things off everyday with no setbacks but if all goes well and he gets through that Durham game then he's available potentially for selection for that second Test.' Mark Wood and Olly Stone look likely to miss the entirety of the series after their own injury issues, resulting in a recall for Jamie Overton after three years out of the Test set-up. Chris Woakes, who is working his way back to full fitness, and Brydon Carse also return to a 14-man squad with Sam Cook and Josh Tongue retained after the win over Zimbabwe. England face a big call at No 3 for the first Test with Jacob Bethell back available. The left-hander batted with aplomb having earned a surprise promotion to the position on the tour of New Zealand late last year but all of England's incumbents, including Ollie Pope, made runs at Trent Bridge in the opening Test of the summer. Wright admitted that Bethell, who made a fine 81 in the first one-day international against the West Indies, was pushing for selection though no final decision had yet been made. 'He's very close to [making the side], it's a great option to have, isn't it?' Wright conceded. 'What a talent we all see in him. When we get up to Leeds we'll have good discussions and look to announce it a few days out from the Test.' England squad for first Test against India at Headingley (20-24 June) Ben Stokes (Durham) – Captain Shoaib Bashir (Somerset) Jacob Bethell (Warwickshire) Harry Brook (Yorkshire) Brydon Carse (Durham) Sam Cook (Essex) Zak Crawley (Kent) Ben Duckett (Nottinghamshire) Jamie Overton (Surrey) Ollie Pope (Surrey) Joe Root (Yorkshire) Jamie Smith (Surrey) Josh Tongue (Nottinghamshire) Chris Woakes (Warwickshire)
