Josh Kerr makes big promise after Kenyan teen stuns London Diamond League
Josh Kerr promised the world 1500m title will remain in British hands come September after Kenyan kid Phanuel Koech stunned the London Stadium.
Reigning champion Kerr could not match the finishing kick of Koech, 18, as the latest breakthrough star clocked 3:28.82 in what had been billed as a Battle of the Brits.
And while it meant a deflating end in front of a sell-out crowd at the Olympic Park, Kerr and fellow Scot Jake Wightman, the 2022 champion, insisted there is no need to panic two months out from Tokyo.
Koech has only appeared on the global radar in the past month having run a world under-20 record 3:27.72 in Paris on June 20.
And Kerr, who claims not to follow the progress of his competitors too closely, joked that the teen first entered his mind when he appeared with 100m to go.
But confident Kerr sounded a rallying cry after by saying: 'The title lives here and it will continue to live here for the next year. I'm not a big nerd of this sport. People come and go. People catch fire a little bit in races.
"I really wanted to show up and win for this crowd but all I can guarantee and promise to them now is I will come back in a few months time and I will be battling for a gold medal for this country. I'll bring it home and then everyone can see what we were working towards today."
George Mills, who has been in impressive form, led at the bell but was tripped with 200m to go, while Wightman finished well for fourth place and is gaining confidence heading into the trials on August 2 after putting a difficult spell with injury behind him.
Morgan Lake won her first ever Diamond League high jump by succeeding over 1.96m to surprise a field containing world record holder Yaroslava Mahuchikh.
Olympic 100m champ Noah Lyles, lining up for the first time over the distance this season following 'a freak injury', was a distant second to Oblique Seville.
Jamaican Seville eased up to celebrate with a salute while running 9.86secs and described his performance as 'something special and phenomenal'
Top Brit Zharnel Hughes was third in 10.02 and was less buoyant in his assessment. 'It was an average performance today, but I am not going to beat myself up about it,' he said. 'I have just got to keep trusting myself and my progress.'
Earlier Kenya's Emmanuel Wanyonyi won a dramatic men's 800m in 1:42.00. Canada's Marco Arop looked on track to break David Rudisha's iconic world record set on this track 13 years ago coming off the final bend only to fade slightly as Wanyonyi squeezed through on the inside.

Liverpool hit £145m mark with six exits and two more could help fund Alexander Isak deal
Liverpool have been one of the Premier League's most active clubs in the transfer market this summer and still hope to complete a record-breaking swoop for Alexander Isak Liverpool have splashed some serious cash in the transfer window, but they've also recouped a big chunk of their summer spend through player sales after sanctioning Tyler Morton's move to Lyon. The Premier League champions have significantly strengthened the squad that made Arne Slot 's maiden season at the helm one to remember by capturing Jeremie Frimpong, Florian Wirtz, Milos Kerkez and Hugo Ekitike this summer. Those deals have added up, though, with Wirtz alone arriving for a package worth a British record £116million. Further signings are expected before the transfer window shuts next month, too, with outgoings helping to fund them. The Echo outlines that Morton's move to Lyon has netted Liverpool a cool £15m including add-ons. The Reds also retain a 20 per cent sell-on fee and will stand to profit if the young midfield thrives in France and moves again. Morton follows Trent Alexander-Arnold, Caoimhin Kelleher, Nat Phillips, Jarell Quansah and Luis Diaz in being sold this summer, with those deals raising a huge £145m. But again, more are forthcoming. Darwin Nunez has agreed terms on a switch to Al-Hilal which will see the Saudi Pro League side part with £46m, though add-ons will see that figure rise substantially. And Federico Chiesa will follow Nunez out the door after hardly featuring at all under Slot following his bargain move from Juventus last summer. All of those outgoings could help Liverpool land their top transfer target before 1 September: Alexander Isak. The Newcastle star is keen on the idea of moving to Anfield this summer but his club have no appetite to sell their top striker. Relations between the club and Isak, 25, have soured, though, after he went to Spain to train alone last week. The Sweden international was instructed to train alone on Wednesday and was not invited to a player-family bonding event earlier in the day. Newcastle will not consider a sale unless they can bring in quality reinforcements but they look set to miss out on a deal for Benjamin Sesko, with the Slovenian favouring a move to Manchester United. The Magpies have also missed out on other attacking targets during what has been a difficult summer transfer window, including Ekitike, Liam Delap and Bryan Mbeumo. More info East Lothian boxer Josh Taylor has said he could have continued in his boxing career, though it would have cost him. The Prestonpans fighter, who reigned as super-lightweight world champion of the world between 2021 and 2022, announced his retirement in July. He was advised to pack it in on medical grounds, and admits that if he hadn't done so - it would have come at the expense of his health. Taylor made the move after learning he had damaged his left eye retina, during a loss to Ekou Essuman in May. The 34-year-old was a Commonwealth Games gold medallist in 2014, reports the Daily Record. Speaking to iFL TV, the ex 135-pound champion said: "It was the right decision for my health. I would have loved to continue. "It's all healed up now as I had laser surgery on my eye. They thought they saw a wee tear in my retinal tissue and in the end they found six tears. "So I thought 'right, that's it, I've got to look after my health now'. I probably could have continued but it was a big risk to take. "I was literally one punch away from going blind in that eye. But given the risks from what I got told and given what I have achieved in the sport, it's the best decision I have to make for my health. Taylor finished his career with three consecutive defeats to Essuman, rival Jack Catterall and American star Teofimo Lopez. And the Scot concedes he is still coming to terms with putting up the gloves for good. "I've had a couple of weeks to digest it now but it's all still a bit raw and emotional", he added. "It's a big of f****** heartache still but I am getting there.
