Odisha paper leak: Top exam agency official who made ‘100 calls after office hours' held
The Crime Branch on Sunday arrested Nihar Ranjan Mohanty, vice president of the BSE — the agency that conducts the OTET — for his alleged involvement. Earlier, seven persons, including a BSE data entry operator, Jitan Moharana, and several teachers were arrested in the case.
The OTET, which was scheduled to be held on July 20, was cancelled on the evening of July 19 after a handwritten copy of the question paper went viral on social media. It affected over 75,000 candidates. In Odisha, clearing the test is mandatory for appointment and promotion of teachers in government and private schools at the elementary level.
Crime Branch DG Vinaytosh Mishra said even though Moharana had no direct official dealings with Mohanty, there were over 100 calls between them beyond office hours. Earlier, Moharana was kept out of the examination process over his suspicious conduct in the past.
'Neither did Mohanty have any relation with Moharana, nor was there any direct official interaction. Despite this, there were over 100 calls between them in the past three months. This was the primary grounds for suspicion to zero in on the board vice president,' said the Crime Branch DG.
As per Crime Branch sources, Mohanty's role was to set the question papers. Before printing, the Bhopal-based press had sent a password-protected copy of the question paper to Mohanty. He is accused of giving Moharana access to it and sharing it with two teachers, who sold it to others.

Bhubaneswar: With Odisha being targeted as a potential destination for hydroponic marijuana, a Bangkok-based drug cartel is using airport-hopping tactics to smuggle the contraband into the state, a senior official of the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) told TOI on condition of anonymity. After two failed attempts at Bhubaneswar's Biju Patnaik International Airport (BPIA), carriers are now suspected to be rerouting consignments through airports like Jharsuguda, Kolkata, Hyderabad, and Bengaluru to avoid detection. "Once they escape scrutiny at any of these airports, they use other modes of transport to deliver the consignment. Last month, a marijuana consignment was seized at Kolkata airport," the official said. In two recent busts, hydroponic marijuana worth a total of Rs 40 crore was seized. The carriers in both cases were unrelated and came from different states—three from Uttar Pradesh in the first case, and one from Gujarat in the second. "The carriers are only handed an air ticket at Bangkok airport and are instructed to carry the consignment. Bones Found From New Site In Dharmasthala Mass Burial Case
Dharmasthala (Karnataka): The Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing the alleged mass burial case in Dharmasthala on Monday recovered multiple skeletal remains from a new site identified by the anonymous complainant, police sources said. Under the supervision of Director General of Police (DGP) Pranab Mohanty, the SIT halted exhumations at the designated 11th site and redirected operations to a previously unexamined spot at a place called Banglegudde. The new site, located on an elevated terrain nearly 100 feet high, has yielded several skeletal fragments, including skulls and other human bones, sources in the police said. According to sources, the SIT, which is investigating the case of hundreds of alleged illegal burials between 1995 and 2014, has already gathered Unnatural Death Report (UDR) records for the period. Despite earlier records being tampered with or missing from Belthangady police archives, prior data collection ordered by Mohanty soon after the SIT's constitution helped preserve critical evidence. Police officials said the recovered skeletal remains have been sent to the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) to determine age, gender, and possible cause of death. The skeletal remains that were recovered from site No. 6 on July 31 have been sent for forensic examination. Attempts to exhume at four other locations--labelled sites 7 to 10--had earlier failed to produce conclusive evidence, further intensifying focus on the new site. Minor injuries were reported among a few personnel during the operation due to the difficult terrain, police officials said. The SIT has invited residents who had earlier lodged complaints or shared information to actively engage with the ongoing investigation. Officials said that recovering as many skeletals as possible remains a top priority in one of Karnataka's largest forensic-led investigations. The SIT investigation continues under tight secrecy, with daily operations expected to proceed based on emerging findings. The SIT was formed by the state government after allegations emerged of mass murder, rape, and illegal burials in Dharmasthala over the past two decades. The complainant, a former sanitation worker whose identity has not been disclosed, claimed that he was employed in Dharmasthala between 1995 and 2014. He alleged that he was forced to bury several bodies--including those of women and minors--some of which bore signs of sexual assault. He has since recorded a statement before a magistrate in connection with these claims.

Gujarat HC grants relief to news anchor accused in defamation, atrocities case after complaint by senior Congress leader
The Gujarat High Court on Monday granted relief to an Ahmedabad-based news anchor in a case of defamation and atrocity, filed by Congress leader Dr Tushar Chaudhary, based on the assurance of the Additional Public Prosecutor that the journalist will be served a notice of 15 days in case the investigating officer deems it appropriate to arrest her. Justice Nirzar Desai was hearing the petition by Gopi Maniar-Ghanghar, anchor of Ahmedabad-based Nirbhay News Channel, for quashing and setting aside the FIR lodged at Tapi District, based on Chaudhary's complaint under Section 356 (Defamation) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and various sections of Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989. Chaudhary is the newly appointed Congress Legislature Party (CLP) leader in Gujarat Assembly. The court order stated, 'Public Prosecutor Hardik Dave has made a statement before this Court upon instructions received by the Nikita Shiroya (SC/ST Cell Tapi Vyara) that… the investigation is at very initial stage and therefore, it would serve the end of justice if this Court records the statement of learned Public Prosecutor that in case, during the course of investigation, if the investigating officer deems it appropriate to arrest the present applicant, she will be given a clear notice of fifteen days and upon receipt of the notice…' The court further said, 'The applicant would be at liberty to avail appropriate remedy so as to take remedial measure to seek relief against her proposed arrest. In the FIR, the Congress MLA from Khedbrahma has alleged that in a show aired on July 22 on Nirbhay News, Ghanghar made an objectionable statement against him. He said Mehta consented to the statements, which were 'defamatory for him and the entire tribal community'. Ghanghar's advocate Utkarsh Dave said, '…Ghanghar… was the interviewer, who does not have control over what the other person is going to say… We will proceed with legal remedy in case the notice for arrest is issued.'
