Celine Song Reinvents the Rom-Com With ‘Materialists'—Here's How to Watch

Director Celine Song returns with her highly anticipated sophomore feature, Materialists, a sharp, modern take on romance rooted in New York City's elite dating scene. Following her Oscar-nominated debut with Past Lives, Song shifts from quiet longing to a more incisive, but equally intimate, look at how the search for true love intersects with money and class. The film stars Dakota Johnson as Lucy, a professional matchmaker whose career revolves around helping others find love based on compatibility metrics—sometimes as straightforward as income, age, and status. But when her personal life collides with her work, Lucy finds herself at the center of her own complicated love triangle, torn between Harry (Pedro Pascal), a wealthy private equity client who seems to check every box, and John (Chris Evans), her struggling actor ex who still knows her in a way few others do. While Materialists carries the breezy energy of a classic rom-com, Song layers the story with a deeper examination of the transactional facets of modern dating. As she explained to ELLE, her time spent working as a real-life matchmaker while building her playwriting career exposed her to the unsettling ways people sometimes quantify love. 'While I was a matchmaker, I was asking my clients to describe their ideal partner and the answers were all numbers: height, weight, income, age… While I understood why they were asking for those things, I knew from being in love myself that that's just not at all what love is about or feels like. So [making this] movie was about [striking] the balance between the practical and the fantasy of true love,' she said. For Johnson, Lucy's internal conflict lies at the heart of the film. 'She's at a very interesting time in her life where she's sort of teetering between two worlds,' Johnson told Entertainment Weekly. 'Allowing yourself to be loved is scary, and really loving another person is scary. It's a story of bravery.' Though the film nods to the feel of '90s romantic comedies, Song is clear that Materialists isn't simply a lighthearted love triangle. 'I would actually be more interested in it being talked about as a story of Lucy as she navigates not just the love and dating world in her clients' lives, but also her own personal reality and beliefs about love,' she added. One of the film's most memorable moments comes early on, when Lucy casually orders a 'Coke and beer' at a wedding—a strange combination that, as Song explained to GQ, reveals much about her character's working-class roots and serves as a quiet signal of her history with John, who knows her well enough to bring her the drink without asking. 'It speaks to Lucy's character, about her background, and where she comes from,' Song said. 'It's meant to be a weird thing—which is why it's so special that John knows her drink order.' Materialists opens in theaters on June 13. While A24 has not yet confirmed an exact streaming release date, the film is expected to eventually land on HBO Max, as part of A24's ongoing streaming partnership with Warner Bros. Previous A24 titles like Priscilla and Babygirl have followed a similar release pattern. For now, the film is exclusively available in theaters. Buy Tickets

Taylor Swift Told Travis Kelce He'd Look Like a ‘Movie Star' in a Jacket, Claims ‘Lip Reader'

Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce's Stanley Cup finals video proved she couldn't get enough of his look as they stepped back into the spotlight. The couple marked the end to their prolonged hiatus from the public eye on Thursday night, taking to the stands in Florida. Making a comeback, that too in style, a viral video showed them talking closely, and a lip reader has since revealed their off-the-charts adorable conversation. It seems Swift lovingly praised the athlete's outfit, telling him he would look like a 'movie star' in a jacket. A video showed Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce taking their romance to the Stanley Cup finals while rumors of a secret wedding made the rounds. In the clip from Thursday night's game at the Amerant Bank Arena in Florida, the two appeared engaged in a stimulating exchange. A lip reader told MailOnline that their discussion was all things fashion and that Swift gushed over her man's choice of jacket. NJ Hickling dissected their conversation and disclosed the singer's sweet praise to Kelce. The Daily Mail shared that Hickling claimed the clip first showed the Kansas City Chiefs star initiating the talk. 'Yeah 'cos I'm big, they're quite good jackets,' he told his girlfriend, who seemed quite intrigued by his observation. Kelce then described the jacket and how 'it'll be tailored, has a hat and everything.' Swift replied, 'That's crazy,' and continued sipping her canned drink. He showed her something on his phone, and after watching closely, she said, 'Oh wow.' Following this, Travis Kelce asked Taylor Swift if she wanted that in the video, and she responded, 'You'd look like a movie star.' The footage finally concluded with the NFL star deciding, 'That looks like the perfect one.' It didn't come as a surprise that the Grammy winner sees Kelce as a 'movie star,' given his recent string of acting gigs. He made his acting debut on Ryan Murphy's 'Grotesquerie' last year and is taking on Hollywood brick by brick. Expect traffic headaches Saturday with protest, sports, music, I-94 closure

Cue the traffic nightmares between downtown Minneapolis and downtown St. Paul, and the new public transit services rolling up to meet them. In light of protests, sporting events, concerts and Interstate 94 closing in both directions between Huron Boulevard and Interstate 35W this weekend, Metro Transit is bracing for a key test of its latest bus offerings: the B Line from Uptown Minneapolis to downtown St. Paul, which debuts at 4 a.m. Saturday, and the Route 94 bus, which is launching new weekend service with departures every half hour. In addition, the Gold Line from Woodbury to downtown St. Paul debuted in March. The interstate closure won't be the only event disrupting weekend traffic. There are 'No Kings' protests planned across the country against the Trump administration, including an 11 a.m. rally at St. Paul College that will lead into a noon march to the State Capitol. As many as 20,000 protesters are expected to attend. On Saturday evening, Minnesota United plays San Diego FC at 7:30 p.m. at Allianz Field in St. Paul, and Grammy-winning Canadian singer-songwriter The Weeknd performs at 7 p.m. at U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis. In addition, the two-day Stone Arch Bridge Festival opens Saturday in Minneapolis, and the Minnesota Lynx take on the Los Angeles Sparks at noon Saturday at Target Center. In anticipation of heightened passenger demand, Metro Transit will run three-car trains along the Green Line on Saturday and maintain extra operators, TRIP agents and other greeters at high-traffic station platforms along University Avenue, including the Capitol/Rice Street station. 'We know we're going to have larger than usual crowds,' said Metro Transit spokesman Drew Kerr. 'All hands on deck.' All I-94 entrance and exit ramps between I-35W and Huron Boulevard were scheduled to close beginning at 9 p.m. Friday, with both directions of I-94 closing for bridge work along eastbound I-94 beginning at 10 p.m. The interstate is expected to reopen by late Sunday night, but six ramps will remain closed through mid-August, including I-35W northbound to eastbound I-94, Huron Boulevard to eastbound I-94 and eastbound I-94 to Huron Boulevard. A $16 million project to repair five I-94 bridges in Minneapolis began in October 2024 and is expected to wrap up by October of this year. More information is online at The B Line, Metro Transit's seventh bus rapid transit service, will operate from 4 a.m. to 1 a.m., with free rides from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday courtesy of Midtown Global Market. Community celebrations featuring free cookies, a kids art table and Skip Traffic, the Metro Transit mascot, are planned from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the downtown St. Paul Union Depot and the Lake and Chicago station in Minneapolis.
