Travis Kelce opens up about being Taylor Swift's ‘plus one' — and why he loves it
The couple, who have been dating since 2023, frequently make headlines together, whether they are celebrating after one of the NFL player's games, appearing at one of her concerts or having a date night in New York City. After years of navigating a romance in the public eye, the Kansas City Chiefs star is revealing how the two manage to both enjoy their moments in the spotlight.
'I get to be the plus one. I get to go and be that fan. Because I am a fan,' Kelce said about their relationship in an interview with GQ.
The 35-year-old athlete, who is the magazine's September cover star, continued. 'I'm a fan of the music. I'm a fan of art. And it's so cool that I get to experience her being that plus one for me on the football field. I feel that same enjoyment every time she comes to my shows.'
For the past two years, Swift has shown support for Kelce and his teammates, cheering them on at Arrowhead Stadium alongside a group of her celebrity friends. Cameras occasionally pan to the pop star to see her reaction to a play or capture the couple as they leave the stadium together, often hand in hand.
Later in the interview, he gushed about Swift and pointed out some similarities the Grammy winner shares with his mom, Donna Kelce.
'Their kindness, their genuineness, their ability to say hello to everyone in the room. Their ability to show love and support no matter what,' he said, comparing the two.
'And on top of that, their work ethic. I saw my mother reach goals that she had set for herself, go from being a teller to working all the way up in the KeyBank building. I've seen Taylor do the exact same thing of setting goals for herself and exceeding the expectations and really captivating the world in that regard.'
He's not exaggerating. Swifties (and the world) are fascinated by the icon's every move. Just last night, for example, legions of Swifties stayed up past midnight to see the project she was unveiling. It's a new album, as it turns out, and she used her upcoming appearance on 'New Heights' — Kelce's podcast with his older brother, Jason — to promote it.
It's just a taste of the magnitude of Swift's stardom that has extended to Kelce, too. So, how does Kelce feel about the constant attention he has received since she attended her first Chiefs game in September 2023?
'You can't block that (attention) out,' he says about the added scrutiny. 'If someone says something that they don't like about you, you have to be able to understand how you are portraying yourself for them to say that.'
He hears the comments from vocal critics, and they affect him.
Kelce adds, 'I'm a guy who doesn't want anyone to say anything negative about me. Some people don't give a f—. I'm someone who does care.' The three-time Super Bowl champion wants to be respected, on and off the field.
'I do want people to look at me like I'm doing good in the world. I'm influencing and being somebody that has done it the right way,' he said.
His comments come as Kelce looks to leave behind a summer of jet-setting with Swift and focus on the start of the 2025 NFL season. In July, he gave fans a glimpse into what the couple has been up to this offseason.
He shared a lengthy slideshow on Instagram July 24 that featured multiple photos with Swift, marking the first time he posted pictures of her on his page.
In one photo, he sported a 'Captain' hat while she wore one that read 'First mate.' Other pictures showed the two enjoying a cozy dinner in a restaurant and playing hockey. 'Had some adventures this offseason, kept it 100,' he captioned the post.

Taylor Swift is driving everyone crazy (in a good way)
Taylor Swift People in entertainment Music MediaFacebookTweetLink Follow Musicians have long since figured out how to turn their album announcements into online frenzies. But it takes a different kind of superstar, and fanbase, to turn a release into a mystery treasure hunt. After a period of relative quiet, Taylor Swift appeared out of thin air to announce a new album, called 'The Life of a Showgirl.' Or she announced an announcement — she'll talk about the album first on her boyfriend's podcast later this week. This announcement arrived at the same time as a GQ profile of that boyfriend, Travis Kelce, making fans feel for the first time that they were really hearing from and seeing the couple, as a couple, directly. As a Swiftie, I can attest that we fans remain in a constant state of hunger for any dregs of connection, forced to search out breadcrumbs in her songs, music videos or even social posts that leave us spiraling (or 'clowning' as we like to say). The singer rarely does interviews and when she does they're in a much more formal setting — certainly more formal than on an often-meandering podcast with her boyfriend and his brother. This time? 'We're about to do a f*cking podcast!' Swift exclaimed in a preview for the episode of 'New Heights.' That podcast is expected to be released on August 13 at 7 p.m. ET. How excited are fans? One of my Swiftie friends even switched flights to ensure they're not 30,000 feet in the air when the podcast is released. Unable to wait a day to hear the podcast, eager fans have spent the hours since the announcement reviewing the hints that Swift appeared to sprinkle throughout her work in the past few years, pointing toward the album that fans took to calling 'TS12.' For at least a year, theorizing has revolved around the number 12 and the color orange. As always, the Swifties were right. On Monday morning a carousel of 12 photos was posted to Taylor Nation's Instagram with the caption, 'Thinking about when she said 'See you next era…'' All those photos feature Swift in orange outfits that she wore while on The Eras Tour. There was also the famous orange door of the Eras tour, featured on a screen on stage as she performed the last song of the show 'Karma' which left many fans frantic and theorizing. That same orange color was featured in the background of this weeks' teaser for the 'New Heights' episode. Prior to the announcement that Swift would be the special guest, many fans had already put the pieces together based on the background color, the silhouette and the fact it was posted along with Taylor Nation's Instagram post. And before all of that, there was the TikTok video that Swift shared in October before her show at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami, Florida. Swift is seen walking near section A12 — for fans, that signaled to August 12, the announcement day. If you think that sounds conspiracy-minded, a countdown appeared on Swift's website to 12:12am Eastern on August 12, which is when the name of her 12th studio album was released. So if you have a Swiftie in your life, this is why they sound a little loopy, raving about random numbers and colors, as they put on every orange piece of clothing they could find. But tell us while you wait — what else have you noticed?

Chiefs players ‘teased' Travis Kelce in locker room for 2016 dating show, Derrick Johnson says
There was a time when Travis Kelce's dating life was the subject of entertainment media, even without Taylor Swift. In 2016, the Kansas City Chiefs tight end had his own dating show, 'Catching Kelce,' on which he tried out dating 50 women, one from each state, in an attempt to find a girlfriend. Advertisement The show lasted one season. Kelce's former teammate, Chiefs all-time tackle leader Derrick Johnson, told Fox News Digital how the locker room reacted to Kelce's dating show. 'He tried not to [talk about the show in the locker room] but we kind of teased him at times, because when you're playing for Andy Reid, there's no distractions. You got to do your job and do it at a high level. So we were aware of the show in the locker room. We'd throw different stuff out there. But when it came to football, it was all business,' Johnson said. Kelce turned 27 in October 2016 when the show aired, overlapping with that year's NFL season. Advertisement The tight end was in the midst of his first 1,000-yard receiving season and second-of-10-straight Pro Bowl seasons. And while the teasing for the show came in the locker room, Johnson says the team's veterans also respected the younger Kelce's abilities when it came to dating. 'He had that taken care of. Good or bad, that's the area that he needs no help in,' Johnson said. 5 Travis Kelce led the dating show 'Catching Kelce' in 2016. YouTube/E! The show's first and only season ended with Kelce choosing a contestant from Kentucky, Maya Benberry, as his girlfriend. However, by 2017, Kelce was reported to have begun dating his next girlfriend, model Kayla Nicole. Advertisement Kelce and Nicole reportedly dated for five years up until May 2022. Once Kelce began his relationship with Swift in 2023, Johnson took notice. 5 Kelce was 'teased' about his dating show in the locker room, according to Chiefs all-time tackle leader Derrick Johnson. Fox News 5 Kelce started dating Taylor Swift in 2023. AP 'He outkicked his coverage. Taylor's big time,' Johnson said. 'Kelce's big time as well, football-wise, but she is globally. So they're definitely a power couple.' Johnson left the Chiefs for the rival Raiders for his final season in 2018, but his lasting influence preceded the team's historic dynasty and three Super Bowl wins, with five total trips to the big game, from 2019 to February 2024. Johnson was famously a team leader on defense in the early years of Kelce's career. 'None of us knew who he could really be. He probably didn't know it at all either. And once he got going after his second year, third year, I was like, 'This guy is the man!'' Johnson said.
