Welcome to Steelers Morning Rush, our new daily short-form podcast with Alan Saunders, giving a longer perspective on a single news topic surrounding the Pittsburgh Steelers or the National Football League. Today, it's how the pursuit of Aaron Rodgers fits into the Steelers' big-picture offseason plans. The Steelers came into the offseason without an answer at the quarterback position, which is largely what has held the team back compared to the best of the AFC over the last few season. After an early survey of the landscape, Steelers general manager Omar Khan correctly assessed that there was not a long-term franchise quarterback available to the team this offseason. So Khan turned to the future, using the team's rare situation with departing free agents to line up a haul of compensatory picks that will give Khan the ammunition he needs to trade up for a quarterback in the 2026 NFL Draft. So why the pursuit of Rodgers? Because the team is still trying to win. They were a good team in 2024, and had a great defense. They can probably be that or better with slightly better quarterback play in 2025, and while Rodgers is certainly not a long-term answer, he could possibly provide that for one season. The entire reason the team was selective about how they spent their free agent money this offseason was to maximize those 2026 comp picks and ensure that they'll be able to get the quarterback they want in 2026, no matter what happens on the field this year, and once that process was put in place, they're just trying to put the best team on the field they can for 2025. Former Pittsburgh Steelers running back and fifth-round draft pick Jaylen Samuels is once again looking for a new home. Advertisement Samuels signed with the CFL's Ottawa Redblacks early last month but was released over the weekend as part of the team's final roster cuts. Samuels was one of 21 players cut. The 28-year-old was drafted by the Steelers in the fifth round at No. 165 overall in the 2018 NFL Draft. The former NC State Gamecocks running back played for Pittsburgh for three seasons, appearing in 14 games each year, spreading out eight starts. He totaled 459 yards rushing on 131 attempts with one touchdown. Samuel left Pittsburgh to join the Houston Texans in 2021 before signing with the Arizona Cardinals in 2022. He was cut before the season started that season. Advertisement He went back to Houston to join the XFL's Roughnecks in 2022 and then to San Antonio to the UFL's Brahamas in the 2024 UFL Draft. The Redblacks finished 2024 at 9-8-1 and in third place in the East Division, losing 58-38 to the Toronto Argonauts in the East Semifinal game of the playoffs. Samuel was without a team until the Redblacks came calling from the Great White North. At 28, he should still have a ton of football left in him, and he's now available to join any other team as a free agent - either in Canada or the US - to continue his career. As the UFL season is entering its playoffs, his opportunity there might come next season if he decides that's a path he'd like to follow. Pittsburgh Steelers Continue Roster Changes with UDFA Cut originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Pittsburgh Steelers continue to make roster moves early in the offseason. On Thursday, Pittsburgh announced it released defensive end Blake Mangelson via its X account. Mangelson was signed as an UDFA on April 28 and participated in rookie minicamp and the first week of OTAs. Advertisement Before signing with the Steelers this offseason, Mangelson accepted an offer to the Minnesota Vikings' rookie minicamp but canceled when Pittsburgh came calling. The 23-year-old is a monster at 6-5, 279 pounds and played collegiately at BYU. Across four seasons, he posted 82 total tackles with 12 for loss, 2.5 sacks, one interception and four passes defended. His release brings the 90-man roster back down to 90 after wideout Montana Lemonious-Craig signed earlier this week, but Pittsburgh is technically allowed 91 players since Julius Welschof has a roster exemption with the NFL International Pathway Program. The Steelers are expected by some to sign veteran free agent quarterback Aaron Rodgers, so they now have a roster spot open for that, but even if Rodgers decides not to sign, the team has stated they'll add another veteran to compete with Mason Rudolph for the starting job. Advertisement It's also possible Pittsburgh re-signs Mangelson at some point this offseason after more cuts or an injury to a defensive lineman necessitates a need. The team typically retains six or seven on the regular-season 53-man roster, and after Mangelson's release, they currently have 12 with mandatory minicamp beginning on June 10.
