Meta apologises, fixes Kannada translation glitch after Siddaramaiah raises concern

BENGALURU: A day after the Chief Minister's Office raised concern over auto translation from Kannada to English, Meta (Previously Facebook) acknowledged the glitch, apologised, and claimed to have fixed the issue.
The CM had stated that the faulty auto-translation of Kannada content on Meta platforms is distorting facts and misleading users.
Siddaramaiah in his 'X' handle stated that on July 15, he paid his respects to the mortal remains of the late B Saroja Devi, a moment of deep personal and public sorrow. A post about this was shared in Kannada from the official Facebook page of Chief Minister of Karnataka.
'Unfortunately, some people saw a wrong English translation of that post by default on their Facebook feed. The post was written only in Kannada. No English version was posted, and no auto-translation was added or requested from our side,' he stated.
Siddaramaiah pointed out that Facebook's translation feature shows up on user feeds based on their settings, and content creators have no way to disable or control the auto-translation feature on viewers feed. 'In many cases, Facebook shows auto-translated versions of posts by default in user feeds. The original Kannada post remains unchanged and can be viewed by selecting 'See original' option'' he added.
The CM also added that Meta/Facebook has often previously faced similar issues globally for such auto-translation errors, including in Myanmar (2018), Palestine (2017), and most recently in Malaysia (2024) where poor translations led to serious miscommunication and public backlash.
The CM said that Facebook has been in operation for nearly two decades and has a vast user base in India, including a large number of Kannada-speaking users. 'Despite this, it is unfortunate that a sound and reliable translation system has not been put in place. We hope this concern is taken seriously.'' he said.
The CM also urged people not to spread confusion or misinformation based on an error that did not originate from us. 'It is time Meta puts in place better and more responsible translation systems,' he added.

People evicted in Assam may move to Nagaland, warns students' body

GUWAHATI A students' body in Nagaland has warned against the possible inward movement of 'alleged illegal immigrants' evicted from government land in Assam. More than 50,000 people, mostly Bengali-speaking Muslims, have been evicted from reserve forests, wetlands, grazing lands, wastelands, etc., in northeastern and western Assam since June. Resistance to these drives claimed the life of one person in the Goalpara district a few days ago. On Monday (July 21, 2025), the Western Sümi Students' Union (WSSU) expressed deep concern over the ongoing eviction drive in Assam. Its president, Ikato Khulu, and general secretary, Vitoka N. Rochill, issued a statement, saying such drives are threatening areas inhabited by Nagas along the border with Assam. 'It is alarming that such activities are beginning to infringe upon Nagaland's territory, posing a direct threat to the rightful ownership of our land and the safety and security of its residents. These border communities have lived peacefully for generations and have acted as de facto custodians of our State's boundary,' they said. Risk of conflict 'It is pertinent to mention that the alleged illegal immigrants reside near Naga-inhabited areas along the Assam-Nagaland border. This situation further heightens the risks of conflict, displacement, and demographic pressure on our vulnerable border communities,' they said. The WSSU asked the Nagaland government to immediately deploy security forces 'to deter unauthorised actions by external authorities' and ensure 'swift and effective protection of our people.' It also sought steps to prevent a potential influx of illegal immigrants. 'The large-scale evictions, push-backs, and expedited deportations currently underway in Assam will likely trigger displacement-driven movement into Nagaland,' the union stated, resenting the 'slow and inadequate' response of the Nagaland administration to the threat. Dismantle SoO camps In neighbouring Manipur, another Naga organisation has asked the Centre to immediately dismantle camps for Kuki extremist outfits located 'in or around Naga ancestral territories' in the State. These groups had signed the Suspension of Operations (SoO) agreement with the Centre in 2008. In a memorandum to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Foothills Naga Coordination Committee accused the SoO groups of repeatedly violating the terms of the agreement. The committee cited a long list of alleged crimes and violent acts committed by these groups between 2023 and 2025, including extortion, assaults, kidnappings, and the burning of villages. The committee said the SoO agreement 'has become a sanctuary for armed criminals rather than a tool for peace. 'The continued presence and reported relocation of SoO camps into Naga areas represent a direct threat to communal harmony, constitutional order, and national security,' it stated in the memorandum. The committee warned that any attempt to impose such camps in Naga areas would be seen as an act of aggression.

After Super Court verdict in Muda case, Siddaramaiah demands apology from BJP & JD(S)

Bengaluru: Chief minister Siddaramaiah Monday demanded a public apology from BJP and JD(S) after the Supreme Court upheld the Karnataka high court's decision to quash an Enforcement Directorate (ED) notice issued to his wife BM Parvathi in connection with the Mysore Urban Development Authority (MUDA) site allotment case. "If BJP and JD(S) functionaries have even a shred of dignity and self-respect left, they must immediately offer a public apology," Siddaramaiah said. Siddaramaiah pointed out that besides "continuously making baseless allegations" against him and his family, BJP and JD(S) held a padaytara from Bengaluru to Mysuru seeking an investigation into the case. Siddaramaiah welcomed the Supreme Court's verdict, saying: "The SC's historic order dismissing ED's appeal seeking to investigate my wife, Parvathi, is a resounding blow to the central govt. Throughout my long political career, I have always bowed before the Constitution and the law. The SC has upheld and protected this belief through its verdict." The harassment inflicted through such politically motivated actions is deeply deplorable. I will never forget the mental agony and harassment that my family and I endured because of this. " Siddaramaiah added that the SC's remarks personally resonated with him and reflected a broader sentiment among the public. "What the SC has said truly echoes my view — political battles must be fought using the electorate, not by misusing constitutional agencies like ED," he said. These words reflect the opinion of every conscientious Indian who believes in the Constitution. This verdict has brought peace and restored faith in the judiciary among all those who, over the last 10-11 years, have suffered due to the misuse of the I-T, CBI, and ED by the central govt and BJP in their pursuit of political vendetta. " He added: "After this eye-opening order, PM Modi and Union home minister Amit Shah must wake up and restore the autonomy that these institutions are meant to have and cleanse themselves of their sins."
