People evicted in Assam may move to Nagaland, warns students' body
A students' body in Nagaland has warned against the possible inward movement of 'alleged illegal immigrants' evicted from government land in Assam.
More than 50,000 people, mostly Bengali-speaking Muslims, have been evicted from reserve forests, wetlands, grazing lands, wastelands, etc., in northeastern and western Assam since June. Resistance to these drives claimed the life of one person in the Goalpara district a few days ago.
On Monday (July 21, 2025), the Western Sümi Students' Union (WSSU) expressed deep concern over the ongoing eviction drive in Assam. Its president, Ikato Khulu, and general secretary, Vitoka N. Rochill, issued a statement, saying such drives are threatening areas inhabited by Nagas along the border with Assam.
'It is alarming that such activities are beginning to infringe upon Nagaland's territory, posing a direct threat to the rightful ownership of our land and the safety and security of its residents. These border communities have lived peacefully for generations and have acted as de facto custodians of our State's boundary,' they said.
Risk of conflict
'It is pertinent to mention that the alleged illegal immigrants reside near Naga-inhabited areas along the Assam-Nagaland border. This situation further heightens the risks of conflict, displacement, and demographic pressure on our vulnerable border communities,' they said.
The WSSU asked the Nagaland government to immediately deploy security forces 'to deter unauthorised actions by external authorities' and ensure 'swift and effective protection of our people.' It also sought steps to prevent a potential influx of illegal immigrants.
'The large-scale evictions, push-backs, and expedited deportations currently underway in Assam will likely trigger displacement-driven movement into Nagaland,' the union stated, resenting the 'slow and inadequate' response of the Nagaland administration to the threat.
Dismantle SoO camps
In neighbouring Manipur, another Naga organisation has asked the Centre to immediately dismantle camps for Kuki extremist outfits located 'in or around Naga ancestral territories' in the State. These groups had signed the Suspension of Operations (SoO) agreement with the Centre in 2008.
In a memorandum to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Foothills Naga Coordination Committee accused the SoO groups of repeatedly violating the terms of the agreement. The committee cited a long list of alleged crimes and violent acts committed by these groups between 2023 and 2025, including extortion, assaults, kidnappings, and the burning of villages.
The committee said the SoO agreement 'has become a sanctuary for armed criminals rather than a tool for peace. 'The continued presence and reported relocation of SoO camps into Naga areas represent a direct threat to communal harmony, constitutional order, and national security,' it stated in the memorandum.
The committee warned that any attempt to impose such camps in Naga areas would be seen as an act of aggression.

Licence Rules Set To Ease Further
New Delhi: The Centre, in a bid to boost the ease of doing business in Delhi, has asked the lieutenant governor to roll out reforms to deregulate licensing requirements so that a single-window clearance system can be made to position the capital as an "investment destination". Among the key proposals is scrapping the need for health trade, general trade and factory licences that are issued by MCD and NDMC to establishments across the city. The Centre has also recommended that businesses already registered under GST or FSSAI be exempted from registering separately under the Shops and Establishment Act, which is administered by Delhi govt's labour department. You Can Also Check: Delhi AQI | Weather in Delhi | Bank Holidays in Delhi | Public Holidays in Delhi The deregulation cell under the cabinet secretariat has pitched for bringing approvals from FSSAI, GST, ESIC, the fire department and Delhi Pollution Control Committee under a single-window system. Sources said that the Centre has described these as "low-hanging fruits" that can be quickly "fructified" through executive orders or notifications, without the need to amend existing laws. The push comes days after LG VK Saxena cleared a proposal withdrawing Delhi Police's powers to issue licences to seven categories of businesses — swimming pools, eateries, hotels, guest houses, discotheques, video game parlours, amusement parks and auditoriums. Officials said a presentation was recently made to the Prime Minister, showcasing reforms already initiated by the LG to simplify business rules. While appreciating Saxena's efforts, the PM asked officials to ensure traders are no longer caught in red tape while setting up shop. The deregulation cell, officials said, studied various laws and held rounds of meetings with officers from Delhi govt, MCD, NDMC, DDA, RERA and the Union housing and urban affairs ministry to map the regulatory maze caused by overlapping agency powers. The final recommendations were shaped by these deliberations and by looking at best practices in other states. One of the reforms — exempting GST- or FSSAI-registered businesses from mandatory Shops and Establishment Act registration — can be implemented via a labour department notification, officials said. Acknowledging the LG's push to ease the licensing framework, the cell has advised doing away with health trade, general trade and factory licences issued under Delhi Municipal Corporation Act, 1957. These, it said, can be eliminated through a simple LG notification stating that registration under GST, FSSAI or the Factories Act would suffice. Since parts of the capital fall under NDMC jurisdiction, the deregulation cell has recommended a similar notification under the NDMC Act, 1994, too. To streamline the process, the cell has suggested designating either MCD or NDMC as the nodal agency for all business-related licences. It has proposed that applicants be required to visit only one office for all approvals. It further recommended transferring powers to issue FSSAI and weights and measures licences to the civic agency and designating the MCD commissioner or NDMC chairperson as commissioner of food safety and controller of legal metrology. "Any other licence for commercial activity currently handled by Delhi govt should also be brought under MCD to ensure a single point of contact," the cell said. It added that these changes would help build a genuine single-window clearance system. LG has been advised to bring all stakeholders — MCD, NDMC, FSSAI, GST, ESIC, EPF, fire services and DPCC — on to a common platform. "MCD or NDMC should not merely act as a post office, but coordinate with these agencies to ensure time-bound delivery of licences," the cell said.

KTR, Harish tell BRS students wing to educate people on injustice to TG on river waters issue
Senior leaders of the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) have asked the student wing leaders of the party (BRS Vidyarthi) to educate the youth and people on how Congress, Bharatiya Janata Party and Telugu Desam Party have been lying about the Polavaram-Banakacherla Link Project (PBLP) being taken up by Andhra Pradesh at the cost of Telangana's rights. Giving a PowerPoint presentation to the members of BRSV on Kaleshwaram and PBLP at the meeting here on Saturday, working president K.T. Rama Rao and senior leader T. Harish Rao said the responsibility of educating people, particularly the student community and the youth is on BRSV., and reminded them how students and youth had played a key role in the statehood movement. They explained to the BRSV members how party president K. Chandrasekhar Rao had encouraged youth in politics and how he, as the Chief Minister, had achieved 95% quota to Telangana youth in jobs by getting the Presidential Order amended. Stating that the commitment of Mr. Revanth Reddy to Telangana was exposed in his refusal even to utter 'Jai Telangana' slogan, they alleged that the Chief Minister is trying to erase the memories of Statehood movement. With the help of the PowerPoint presentation, Mr. Harish Rao explained to them how the Pothireddypadu Head Regulator and Banakacherla Cross Regulator are proving to be a death knell to the river water interests of Telangana. He sought to know when there was no clarity on the assured water in Godavari Basin, how can A.P. Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu say that they would only utilise floodwater. Mr. Rama Rao said despite getting 18 clearances and permissions to utilise 240 tmc ft with Kaleshwaram project, the Naidu government had opposed it along with other projects by writing several letters to the Centre and other agencies. He had also opposed 967 tmc ft assured water of Godavari to Telangana, Mr. Rama Rao said, and added that Mr. Chandrasekhar Rao had written to the Centre in 2020 itself seeking 1950 tmc ft water out of an average 3,000 tmc ft Godavari water flowing into sea. Party leaders G. Jagadish Reddy, Deshapathi Srinivas, Gellu Srinivas Yadav and others spoke.
