Review: Do The Waterboys still have it? I went to Aberdeen Music Hall gig to find out

The Waterboys seem to be one of these bands that have been around since the dawn of time – despite having a habit of chopping and changing its line-up.
And apart from a seven-year break in the 90s, it seems like they've never stopped touring – which for some groups can be a hinderance.
I'm sure we've all had that thought at least once when leaving a gig of someone who has been around the block for decades: 'Nah, they've not got it anymore'.
So with Mikey Scott and The Waterboys playing The Music Hall in Aberdeen this past Wednesday, I thought I would go along and see if the folk rockers still 'had it'.
Having only gotten into their music recently, my cousin Joshua and I certainly felt like the youngest people at the iconic Granite Mile venue on Wednesday night (the band were on to their eighth album by the time I was born).
But 66-year-old Mikey was on hand to help the crowd roll back the years – with his presence and dynamism bringing the packed hall back to the glory days.
Kicking off with Be My Enemy, the crowd were right up for it thanks to the whine of Scott's guitar riffs and unrivalled wall of sound coming from the whole band.
A special shoutout must go to piano player Famous James and Brother Paul on the keyboard, who kept the energy going all night long flanking Scott on either side.
Their near five minute solo towards the end of the gig was a personal highlight for me, with James joining Paul on his instrument to almost hammer the keys out of their block, as they wowed the sold-out Music Hall.
After the first whirlwind of songs, Scott began to reminisce about his first visit to Aberdeen all the way back in 1972 as a 13-year-old when his mother worked at the university.
'We would walk up and down Union Street all day,' he quipped, as the rocker ran through tales of spending days (and all his pocket money) at Codona's Arcade.
And it wasn't long before Trump International Links got a mention too, which Scott branded as being 'owned by the biggest liar in the world'.
And after a verbal exchange with what seemed a more MAGA-leaning Aberdonian (including some words which can't be printed) The Waterboys were back underway…
As the band walked off for the encore, everyone waited in anticipation… It was time for the big one.
Many people won't have heard of The Waterboys, but they would have certainly heard the timeless classic The Whole of The Moon.
And seeing it live did not disappoint, as the crowd joined in on every word with Scott playing musical chairs and taking over piano duty.
Once the band walked off stage following Fisherman's Blues, it felt as though the two hours had flown by – a testament to the group's ability to still be able to put on a show all these years later.
So I would be more than happy to go back to see The Waterboys play The Music Hall again – which wouldn't be too far away considering this was their seventh outing here.

Celebrity SAS star Hannah Spearritt's life including quitting UK and S Club heartbreak

S Club 7 star Hannah Sprearitt is best known for being an original band member of the pop group as well as appearing in sci-fi drama Primeval and BBC soaps Casualty and EastEnders Hannah Sprearitt is one of the 14 recruits called up to take part in the latest series of Celebrity SAS: Who Dares Wins. ‌ The famous faces will abandon their glamorous and luxurious lifestyles to immerse themselves in the punishing Special Forces training environment. ‌ This year's course will be physically demanding and psychologically gruelling, all but a few who take part will fail but who will make it to the end and eventually pass? ‌ Speaking about her latest challenge, Hannah said: "I hope to take out of this experience, strength. I want to feel stronger again, mentally and physically, because there's always improvement there. "There are always dips that happen along the way with motherhood or whatever but I think when you just experience different stuff, it changes you. I have no idea what to expect, but I do know it will be an experience and it's something that I will have for life." ‌ She added: "However the experience goes, I am going to learn about myself. Maybe I'll find out I am a bit of a mess or I might find out that I'm stronger than I think I am…it's finding out things about yourself that you would never, ever find out. "We live in this world where it's so easy to live in our comfort zone, so this is an opportunity to get outside of that and…for me anyway, growth and expansion is one of the most important things, and that is something that hopefully I can pass on to my kids." Why did Hannah leave S Club 7? ‌ In 1998, Hannah auditioned for and became a member of S Club 7. In the five years they were together, the group had four UK number one singles and a UK number one album. They recorded a total of four studio albums, released eleven singles and went on to sell over fourteen million albums worldwide. ‌ However, In 2003, a year after band member Paul Cattermole left the group, they announced during a live onstage performance that they were to disband. 11 years alter, all seven band members reunited for a UK arenas tour. In February 2023, the band announced that they would reunite for a 25th anniversary tour later that year but two months later, Hannah's ex Paul died of several heart conditions. In May 2023, the group announced that they had changed their name to S Club and that Hannah would not join them on their coming tour, which they would honour as the Good Times Tour as a tribute to Paul. ‌ Hannah said at the time that she was "extremely excited" to get back together with her bandmates but Paul's death "changed everything". 'I hadn't been in the best of health. I've got a compromised immune system and stress makes it worse," she told The Sun. ‌ "My body just couldn't cope with everything that was happening. I wasn't myself. I was getting these crippling panic attacks, was suffering from really bad vertigo and was tired all the time." She said it was also "affecting my kids too" as she had no energy, adding that she had to make a decision that was right for her and her family. Hannah also issued an apology to fans as she said she didn't want to let them down. Why did Hannah leave the UK? ‌ Hannah recently revealed earlier this year that she'd put her pop star days behind her and has taken up a new career a farmer in Costa Rica. A trip to the region in 2018 is said to have proved transformative and inspired the family to seek out a simpler lifestyle. The Reach hitmaker gave fans an insight into her new life on social media after making the move with her partner, Adam Thomas, and their two daughters, Taya and Tora. ‌ Taking to Instagram, she shared a picture of her daughters enjoying a meal in their new surroundings. So far the change appears to be agreeing with her with the former Dancing On Ice contestant writing in the accompanying caption: "Well... we finally made it to paradise. Beautiful country, beautiful people." Hannah previously spoke out about being left homeless with the faily being forced to move into an office. They were given two months to find somewhere else to live when their landlord sold the rented property they were living in but the moving date was brought forward and left the couple with nowhere to go.

Helen Flanagan breaks silence on 'broke' claims after selling £1m home she shared with Scott Sinclair

The ex-Corrie star is selling the beloved family home she once shared with her ex Scott Sinclair Helen Flanagan has responded to claims she's "skint" after selling the £1m home she once shared with ex-fiancée Scott Sinclair. The actress addressed rumours that have been circulating for months suggesting she's facing financial troubles - and that she's flogging the pricey Cheshire property she previously shared with Scott due to money woes. ‌ The former Coronation Street star, who played Rosie, parted ways with the former Celtic footballer and the father of her children, Matilda, 10, Delilah, seven, and Charlie, four, in 2022 following a 13-year romance. ‌ In an exclusive chat with OK! magazine, the reality star hit back at speculation around her moving situation, stating firmly: "That's not why I'm selling". The 34-year-old said upping sticks was more emotional than financial. ‌ "I'm not in a financial crisis," Helen told the outlet. "I'm moving because I really need a fresh start. Scott surprised me with this house and it was always supposed to be our happy family home. And it wasn't that. "I like to be light-hearted and I hate to sound depressing, but there is a sadness in this house." She went on: "It's been a turbulent three years since we split and I need to start afresh. I want to eventually move to London, but for now we'll stay close to the kids' schools. I don't want to disrupt them. "When you're a mum, you're thinking about the children first and foremost." Helen separated from Robbie Talbot, 45, in May whom she was dating whilst filming Celebs Go Dating last year after a year together - though she says there are "no hard feelings" and the relationship simply "ran its course". ‌ Regarding co-parenting her energetic trio with Scott, Helen admitted: "When you break up with someone, emotions are raw. It can take a long time for those emotions to calm down. And sometimes, even now, we don't get on. "But on the whole, we can actually be in the same room together. He's the father of my children; I was with him since I was 19 and I'm always going to have love for him – but it doesn't mean we want to be together. ‌ "I don't have any bad feelings towards Scott, though sometimes he drives me absolutely mad." Just last month, Scott, 36, moved back into Helen's house despite blocking her on social media last year and Helen claiming they "don't like each other". Fans were surprised and left wondering what was going on. ‌ "The girls' birthdays are close together and we both wanted to be around for that, so he stayed at the house for a little while," Helen explained. "That was really nice for the children, to see their parents be OK with each other." When questioned whether having the children most of the time whilst Scott pursues his football career creates any bitterness, Helen swiftly dismissed the notion. "No," she responded immediately. "Because he's massively financially provided for our children, both for their future and with the house we live in. Also, I quite like the fact that I've got them most of the time. ‌ "I get quite anxious without them, it would make me feel quite sad if they're not with me. Join the Daily Record WhatsApp community! I've booked myself into panto as a distraction." Elsewhere, Helen revealed she has a "secret acting job" at the beginning of next year that will take her through to March. And after everything that's happened over the last year, she now wants to focus on her family and career. "I'm done with men for the time being," she laughed before adding: "I'm actually quite sensitive and... struggle with dating a bit. I feel like there's always something with men. I want to be single and keep my peace."

Mum hailed a ‘genius' as she shares way to keep kids entertained during the summer holidays without spending a penny

KEEPING the kids entertained for a solid six weeks over the summer holidays is no easy task. But one mum has been hailed a 'genius' for sharing her hack to keep her tot busy without spending money. 3 3 Caitlin, from the US, took to social media to share her money-saving trick that she's been using for the past year. In the clip, she said she took her kid to the arcade to 'play' on the machines last year and it kept him entertained for hours. But the mum didn't spend any cash on the games, letting him pretend play instead. She said: "Take your toddler to the arcade. He's having a great time. "I've spent zero money. He doesn't know what the hell is going on." Now a year on, Caitlin is proving the hack still works. "A year ago, I got 12 million views and posted to take your toddler to the arcade because you don't have to spend any money," she explained. "They just climb on and off the stuff, push all the buttons, and even if you tried to put money in, they wouldn't stay on the machine long enough. And a year later, it's still tried and true." "We're at the same arcade, and I'm still not spending any money on him. Because he doesn't know! As soon as he climbs on, he climbs off. And he's having a great time just pushing the buttons." While she did say she bought a drink for herself to support the business, the hack was practically free and worked wonders over the summer holidays. Parents warned 3 common summer foods are dangerous to toddlers - and eating a specific fruit can cause nasty sunburn The clip went viral on her TikTok account @ with over 2.3 million views and 388k likes. People were quick to take to the comments thanking the mum for her clever hack. One person wrote: "Shout out to that arcade for being open early for when kids are actually awake!" Another commented: "Basically like a giant enrichment room full of fun music and buttons to push. I approve." How to survive six weeks of school summer holidays IF you are struggling with the six week summer holidays, you've come to the right place... BATTLING BOREDOM: Despite hours of activities and playdates, if your kids are already complaining there's nothing to do, parenting expert Liat Hughes Joshi says: 'Don't feel you have to organise every second of the holidays. Kids benefit from boredom and learn to make their own fun. 'Boredom can trigger creative and imaginative play but you need to encourage kids to get used to not being told how to spend their time. 'Ride out the pleas of boredom. Counter it with comments such as, 'What do you think you could do?' and maybe have a list of 'I'm bored' activity ideas on the fridge.' SCREEN OVERLOAD: It's tempting during the holidays to rely on a digital babysitter but don't let them gawp their whole summer away in front of a screen. Liat says: 'It's unfair to expect older kids to power down but it's important to set some ground rules. 'Set family tech rules together. If you're often distracted by your phone, follow the rules too. Maybe tell the kids they aren't allowed any screen time until they've done set chores, some exercise, or a board game. 'Are there times when you'd like to ban screens completely? Perhaps during dinner or when they have friends over to visit. 'Tech is a battleground for parents, but you have to set boundaries. Stand firm and be prepared to be unpopular.' TOO MUCH TOGETHERNESS: You love your kids, but being with them 24/7 can be exhausting. Do not feel guilty if you need a bit of downtime. Liat says: 'If you're juggling work and household tasks as well as occupying the kids, it's normal to start feeling overwhelmed or jaded and in need of some peace. 'If you can't afford or don't want to send your kids to all-day camps, look for free kids' workshops so you can get on with jobs or have a break for a couple of hours. 'Seeking a spell of quiet every now and then doesn't make you a bad parent — in fact it will probably make you more positive and enthusiastic when you are with the kids.' SCHEDULING CONFLICT: Schedules can go out the window during holidays, but late nights and early mornings can mean tired and unhappy children. Dr Tamara Bugembe, paediatrician and founder of says: 'Children get grumpy, test boundaries and become challenging when routines are broken. 'Sticking to some kind of routine during the holidays is a good idea. 'We release hormones at different times of the day and when regular meal times and bed times are broken, it causes dips and peaks in mood. 'Holidays are about having fun but an early night once or twice a week will make everyone happier.' EXCESS ENERGY: Make sure kids get out in the fresh air to tire them out — and make them healthier and happier. Dr Bugembe says: 'Sunshine also tops up vital vitamin D levels which helps improve bone strength and energy levels in children. Our levels run low in winter so let the kids stock up in warmer weather. 'Letting them run around in shorts and a T-shirt is the best way to top up. Make sure they're wearing sun cream, get outside and have fun. 'Encourage them to try healthy habits such as cycling and walking. They'll hopefully get hooked and want to carry them on when the weather gets colder.' "Dude, every day I am amazed at how smart people get s**t done in a vastly more efficient way," penned a third. Meanwhile a fourth said: "People got annoyed at this?? It is GENIUS." "I'm a nanny and I've been doing this for the last year because of you,' claimed a fifth
