Videos of Vishal being handcuffed and pinned down by US immigration officers at Newark International Airport last month had sparked outrage and confusion online. Many assumed he was a student. But he was an illegal immigrant for sure. But the truth, however, is far more complex and heartbreaking.
Tracked down by this reporter on Wednesday, a visibly shaken Vishal had returned to his village just a week ago, on June 26, after 15 harrowing months. He is not a student, but a farmer, a Class 10 pass-out who once tilled his family's land. And he had been duped out of Rs 45 lakh by a Karnal-based agent who promised him an American work visa.
'My family sold our land to pay the agent,' Vishal said quietly. 'He told us I'd first go to Europe and then be taken to the US through Central America. One of our relatives in Italy helped me get a nine-month farm visa. I reached Verona, stayed there for eight days, and then flew to Rome.'

SUV driver who mowed down labourer arrested
1 2 Jaipur: City police on Monday arrested a 28-year-old man from Sri Madhopur in Sikar district for allegedly mowing down a 35-year-old labourer after a road rage brawl on Sikar Road under Murlipura police station limits on Saturday. Jaipur police commissioner Biju George Joseph said the accused, Kuldeep Choudhary, a native of Sri Madhopur, was taken into custody, and further investigation is underway. She alleged that her husband was deliberately run over by the same Scorpio, leading to his death. This case was lodged under charges of murder. Kureel said multiple teams were formed under the supervision of senior officers, and the vehicle was tracked through CCTV footage and registration details. Officials said the Scorpio belonged to Surendra Singh, whose sons Kuldeep and Subhash were using it. After searches in Jaipur and adjoining areas, Kuldeep was arrested from Sri Madhopur, and the vehicle was seized. Police said the investigation is still ongoing. 421 kg ganja worth Rs 42L seized; woman among two held
Ahmedabad: The city crime branch on Monday seized 421.38 kg of ganja worth Rs 42.13 lakh, along with a truck valued at Rs 10 lakh and three mobile phones worth Rs 30,000, from the Gheekanta area of the city. Two persons — Ravi Jadhav (39) of Nashik and Nita Yadav (23) of Meghaninagar, Ahmedabad — have been arrested. According to the FIR lodged by sub-inspector D B Kumawat with the Detection of Crime Branch (DCB), the raid followed a tip-off about bulk supply of ganja consignments. A police team, accompanied by two govt panch witnesses, intercepted a truck parked near Chamunda Bridge near Swaminarayan Wadi. Fourth arrest made in Ghaziabad in case of teenage girl's trafficking
New Delhi: Delhi Police has arrested the fourth suspect in a human trafficking case involving a 13-year-old girl who was forcibly married and later rescued from Shamli, Uttar Pradesh. The accused, identified as Ramanjot Singh, 24, a resident of Ghaziabad, is a cyber café owner who allegedly created a fake Aadhaar card listing the minor's age as 19. Deputy commissioner of police (northwest) Bhisham Singh said Ramanjot operated a cyber café on the ground floor of his residence. During interrogation, it was revealed that he actively assisted the other accused by preparing and sharing the forged Aadhaar card to falsely portray the girl as an adult, facilitating her illegal marriage and trafficking. "The mobile phone used to create and share the fake Aadhaar card was recovered from his possession. He used a PDF editor application to manipulate the document," the DCP added. The girl later tried to call her grandmother from someone's phone and managed to give a missed call. The family provided the phone number to the police, who traced and rescued her from Shamli on Aug 16. Police earlier arrested three men in connection with the case — the man she was forcibly married to and two others who facilitated the marriage. The accused were identified as Vikas, 20, Ashu, 55, and the 40-year-old man. Investigations revealed that the marriage took place secretly at a house in west Delhi's Moti Nagar.
