Cape Town launch of 'Hollywood on the Veld' by Ted Botha (July 19)
In 1913 a secretive American millionaire who lived on the top floor of the famous Carlton Hotel had a crazy idea: to make movies in Johannesburg. Not just any movies but the biggest in the world, huge spectacles with elaborate sets, thousands of extras and epic story lines.
Isidore Schlesinger, better known as 'IW', built a studio on a farm called Killarney, where he set out to challenge a place in America that was in its infancy: Hollywood.
The glamour, gossip and high drama of IW's studio fit perfectly into a city experiencing an intoxicating golden age. There was as much action on the movie sets as there was on screen, from political intrigue and the clashing of huge egos to public outbursts, fiery judicial inquiries, disaster and death.
Behind the mad enterprise was a maverick, a tycoon, a recluse, a friend of the famed and the connected. IW could have held his own in California but he chose as his base the City of Gold, and his indomitable ambition saw his 'Hollywood on the Veld' soar. This is the never-been-told-before story of the rise and fall of the strangest and most unique movie empire ever.

Next Stay Close ✕ Goodwin is a 14-year-old and has been in Carpenter's life since she was just 13 years old, while Louie recently became a part of the family and is only a year old. During the interview for her dogs, Carpenter revealed that her dogs sometimes get a glimpse of her glamorous lifestyle, and they also joined her on her 'Short n' Sweet' tour, but unfortunately, they have never seen her perform live. Image: Instagram 'They wait in my dressing room during the show, so they've actually never gotten to see me perform live, which sucks for them because I think they'd like it,' she said. The 'Espresso' singer also shared: 'Tour is weird for them because it's a super-rock-star lifestyle. They come on the bus.' While answering the 'Dogue' questionnaire, the award-winning singer said that the most human thing that her dogs do is that one is a good listener, while another is empathetic. 'This sounds so foo-foo, but Goodwin is really empathetic. He just knows when you're sick and not feeling well. His eyes are humanlike. He's got a lot of emotion; he has a lot of stories. 'Louie's most humanlike quality would probably be his ears. They're so attuned. He's such a good listener. When you call his name, he actually comes to you,' she said. The 26-year-old further added that the best quality of her dogs is how loving and adoring they both are, and refers to them as 'sweet little babies'. 'This sounds cliché, but their best quality - both of them - is just how genuinely loving and adoring they are. 'I know this from the past; some dogs are not very nice and not very friendly, and my dogs are sweet little babies. They're just the nicest, and they love to cuddle,' Carpenter shared.

The event took place on Saturday, 16 August, with the honour presented by mall owner Thami Ndlala. In a statement on Saturday, the organisers said Thomas' recognition marks the beginning of a tradition that will celebrate influential figures in music, art, and culture. I am staying to support my friend Thami Ndlala,' he said in a video on Instagram. Thomas will headline the show alongside fellow American R&B star Donell Jones and leading Mzansi artists, including Zonke Dikana and Vusi Nova. 'It is an honour to have an artist of such great calibre in the music industry headlining the opening,' said Ndlala. Joe Thomas' celebrated music career Thomas, who signed to Polygram Records in 1992, rose to fame the following year with the release of his debut album Everything. Emperors Palace welcomes US R&B legends
Emperors Palace recently hosted two American R&B singers, Glenn Jones and Kenny Lattimore, at the resort and casino's 5-Star D'oreale Grande Hotel. While at the Palace of Dreams, the two superstars also took time out to meet and greet VIP guests at a cocktail function.
