Delhi's peak load surges to 7,401 MW — AI, green power keep the grid stable

Time of India20-05-2025

New Delhi: Delhi's peak power demand touched 7,401 MW at 3:11 pm on Tuesday, the highest recorded so far this season, according to the State Load Dispatch Centre (SLDC). On Monday, the capital's peak power demand was 7,265 MW.
BSES Rajdhani Power Ltd
(BRPL) and BSES Yamuna Power Ltd (BYPL) successfully met peak demands of 3,285 MW and 1,559 MW respectively in their areas.
Tata Power Delhi Distribution Ltd
(Tata Power-DDL) met a peak demand of 2,178 MW, the highest for the season so far.
In BRPL's areas of South and West Delhi, the peak power demand during summer 2024 stood at 3,809 MW and is projected to reach around 4,050 MW in summer 2025. In BYPL's jurisdiction of East and Central Delhi, the peak power demand reached 1,882 MW last summer and is expected to touch around 1,900 MW this year.
BSES discoms, which supply electricity to over 50 lakh consumers across South, West, East, and Central Delhi, said they have tied up long-term power purchase agreements and banking arrangements with other states to meet the rising power demand. Advanced Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) models have been deployed to enhance demand forecasting accuracy.
More than 2,100 MW of
green power
is expected to support power supply in BSES areas during the peak summer months.
According to the discoms, the network has been strengthened through preventive and predictive maintenance. Measures include thermal scanning, partial discharge measurements, and transformer health assessments. Online load monitoring systems are in place to track power transformer and 11 kV feeder load conditions.

Infosys to give cash sops to employees taking part in interviews to help hiring

India's second largest software major Infosys has introduced a cash reward policy for senior employees who conduct interviews for lateral hiring, in what is seen as a move to boost employee morale. An employee will earn 700 points (Rs 700) per interview. Employees can claim the incentive for interviews in the past five months as the programme takes effect retrospectively from January 1, sources told ET. This is the first time Infosys has embarked on such an incentive-led programme, a senior employee said. The Bengaluru-headquartered IT major's policy, however, limits the cash incentive for hirings within India. This is an acknowledgement of employee support for the interview process as the IT sector focuses on lateral recruitment over slowing campus hiring. According to an employee, this move is to encourage team managers and mid-level leaders to get external talent and push employees to reach out to more quality candidates. At Infosys, tech professionals such as track leads, architects and project managers across job level 5 and 6 (JL5 & JL6) routinely interview candidates shortlisted by the talent acquisition team for lateral hiring over 2-3 rounds before the candidate progresses to the HR round. The company, however, has excluded employees in the HR and talent acquisition teams, sub-contractors and titleholders (senior leadership) from the reward programme. Employees cannot claim the incentive if an interview is cancelled or a candidate does not show up. TCS , Wipro , HCLTech and Accenture did not respond to queries on the subject. Infosys's reward programme comes at a time when the $280 billion software services sector is experiencing a shortage of experienced people with specialised skills, especially in AI, amid growth pangs due to weakening global demand and trade wars in their key growth markets. The Salil Parekh-led firm also conducts weekend recruitment drives in which many candidates participate. At such events, an employee could participate in 10-15 interviews a day assessing a candidate's competence in software skills such as Python, Java, Machine Learning, DevOps, etc. The cash reward encourages to interview more candidates. A senior Infosys executive said the scheme was aimed at pacifying a section of employees disappointed with pay hikes of 5-8% for FY24 and the subsequent lower performance bonus payout for the March quarter. 'Earlier, we did not get any such cash incentive for interviews done. In fact, the company gave us compensatory leaves for the interviews conducted at the campus over the weekends,' the employee said. While not many firms have such a policy, some large and mid-sized technology companies such as Honeywell , Accenture and Sonata Software are known to give both cash and non-cash incentives to encourage employees to be part of interview panels and be invested to attract best talent from the pool of available candidates within the industry. Honeywell India vice president (HR) Arppna Mehra said they reward employees by way of a training outside of his or her domain area, helping them acquire leadership skills.

BSES offers 69-89 per cent discount on ACs, fans for Delhi residents

The scheme aims to promote energy efficiency by enabling Delhi households to replace old ACs and fans with new energy-saving models at discounted rates New Delhi BSES has launched a new scheme offering residents of the national capital a chance to replace old air conditioners and ceiling fans with energy-efficient models at discounts ranging from 69 to 89 per cent. According to a statement issued on Thursday, consumers can upgrade to 5-star rated inverter ACs and brushless direct current (BLDC) fans through the scheme, which promises both financial and environmental benefits. 'Replacing old appliances under the scheme can yield annual savings of up to ₹34,000 per AC and ₹1,800 per fan,' the statement said. Domestic consumers of BSES discoms – BRPL and BYPL – can exchange up to three ACs and three fans per consumer number. Energy-saving benefits and grid impact The statement noted that ACs and fans account for nearly 50 per cent of electricity consumption in residential and commercial spaces, leading to high bills, increased carbon emissions, and added pressure on the power grid. 'Rising usage of air conditioners and fans can significantly impact electricity bills during peak months, but simple measures like increasing the AC thermostat setting by just one degree Celsius can reduce electricity consumption by nearly 6 per cent,' it said. Delhi's power demand peaks amid summer heat On May 20, 2025, Delhi's power demand surged to 7,401 MW amid intense heat and humidity — the highest of the season so far, according to discom officials. A BSES spokesperson said that its two discoms, BRPL and BYPL, "successfully" met the peak demand of 3,285 MW and 1,559 MW, respectively. The official added that the discoms were prepared to handle rising summer demand, supported by over 2,100 MW of green power supply.

Delhi Discoms Offer New ACs, Fans To Consumers At Heavy Discount

New Delhi: People in the national capital can avail of a scheme announced by BSES discoms and replace their old air conditioners and ceiling fans during the ongoing summer with new appliances at discounts of 69-89 per cent. Power consumers can upgrade their old ACs and fans with the 5-star inverter ACs and brushless direct current (BLDC) fans under the scheme at discounted rates, a statement said on Thursday. "Replacing old appliances under the scheme can yield annual savings of up to Rs 34,000 per AC and Rs 1,800 per fan. Domestic consumers of BSES discoms - BRPL and BYPL- can exchange three old ACs and fans each against every consumer number," it said. Cooling appliances like air conditioners and fans account for nearly 50 per cent power consumption of a household or commercial establishment, significantly burdening carbon emissions and grid stress, it said. "Rising usage of air conditioners and fans can significantly impact electricity bills during peak months but simple measures like increasing the AC thermostat setting by just one degree celsius can reduce electricity consumption by nearly 6 per cent," the statement said. Setting the AC thermostat at 24 degrees Celsius offers a perfect balance of comfort and cost-effectiveness, it added.
