DBKL urged to examine historical elements to be retained in urban redevelopment
KUALA LUMPUR: Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil has urged the Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) to assess the historical elements to be preserved in the urban redevelopment of 139 identified areas.
He stated that preserving a location's history is equally important in pursuing sustainable and resilient development.
"This area was once a squatter area consisting of wooden houses, due to relocation during the construction of the New Pantai Expressway (NPE). So, there is some history here because some residents, including my staff, were relocated to this area once upon a time.
"So, they have memories of growing up in this area, so that future generations know that before they were born, in previous generations, there was such a community.
"I believe this will help us have strong roots, including in terms of culture, identity, and memories of the place where we were born and raised," he said.
Fahmi, also the Member of Parliament for Lembah Pantai, said this after officiating the groundbreaking ceremony for Taman Rimba Bukit Kerinchi at Pantai Sentral Park, developed by IJM Land and Amona Group, here on Monday (May 26).
Also present were DBKL Planning Executive Director Datuk Zulkurnain Hassan, IJM Land Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Datuk Tony Ling, and Director cum CEO of Amona Group, Datuk Che Hasnadi Che Hassan.
Fahmi said that several areas, including Taman Bukit Angkasa, have been identified for redevelopment in Lembah Pantai.
"To ensure that all residents, especially owners, benefit, we need clear laws. Therefore, DBKL's aspiration to assist in redeveloping these 139 areas around Kuala Lumpur needs to move in tandem with a new act, the Urban Renewal Act," he said.
Meanwhile, he said thousands of trees, including Meranti Damar, Meranti Daun and Merawan Siput Jantan species, would be replanted at Taman Rimba Bukit Kerinchi, which was expected to be completed by the end of this year.
"I have asked the developer to consider several aspects, including the history of the area, so that it can be incorporated into the design of the park.
"If we look at the Kuala Lumpur area, some communities have long been in certain areas before they were developed. I hope we can celebrate that history here by incorporating it in the design or the selection of trees.
"Once upon a time, the Kampung Kerinchi community informed that there were several areas used as places where the community came to find bamboo to be cut and sold, so maybe we can look at what species they are," he said. – Bernama

Govt mulls housing above train stations to ease congestion
PETALING JAYA: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said the government is reviewing a proposal to build housing projects above railway stations to help ease traffic congestion. The plan is being studied with Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL), and regulatory amendments are in progress. "This means the (public housing) project would be built above (the railway station). It will include commercial housing.... not all units will be public housing, but some of them will be. This are among the measures that will be taken (to ease traffic congestion)," he said at the Ilmuan Malaysia Madani forum hosted by the Higher Education Ministry. Also present at the forum were Transport Minister Anthony Loke, Prasarana Malaysia Bhd president and group chief executive officer Mohd Azharuddin Mat Sah and Universiti Putra Malaysia vice-chancellor Datuk Professor Dr Ahmad Farhan Mohd Sadullah. Anwar also addressed the construction of vertical schools under the Kota Madani development, saying they will follow strict safety standards and improved designs. "In Kota Madani Putrajaya, vertical schools will indeed be introduced, and parking will be underground. The residential level will be a proper garden, while the school will be located above. If a school has a lift, it will be dedicated for school use only. So, one can walk from level 14 down to the kindergarten or school, but the construction will be subject to strict conditions," he said. He said the Kota Madani project in Penang will involve 10,000 housing units in Seberang Jaya and Batu Kawan, in South and Central Seberang Perai respectively. "This will include vertical schools, fire stations, and clinics all within the vicinity, so people won't have to bear transportation costs. Otherwise, the MRT won't be viable as people won't use it. This can help reduce the burden on public transportation," he said. Meanwhile, Loke said his ministry and the Ministry of Housing and Local Government are reviewing a plan to reduce or remove parking spaces in flats near railway stations. He said the plan requires policy amendments and has not yet been finalised.

Fahmi, Azalina to collaborate on tightening social media regulation
KUALA LUMPUR, June 4 — Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil has expressed his readiness to hold further discussions with Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Law and Institutional Reform), Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said, to strengthen the regulation of social media platforms in Malaysia. Fahmi said the meeting is vital following Azalina's recent proposal to amend existing laws, including requiring parents and guardians to monitor their children's online behaviour and participate in digital safety awareness and education programmes. He said that these measures will take into account the experience and approaches of the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) and the Ministry of Communications in handling various issues related to digital platforms and social media in the country. 'I will be meeting Datuk Seri Azalina to explore possible ways, based on MCMC's and the Ministry's experience dealing with social media platforms, on what we can do,' Fahmi told reporters after the Hawana 2025-Bernama Strategic Partners' Appreciation Ceremony and Official Launch of Bernama Motorhome at Wisma Bernama here yesterday. Present were Communications Ministry secretary-general Datuk Mohamad Fauzi Md Isa, as well as Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama) chief executive officer Datin Paduka Nur-ul Afida Kamaludin and editor-in-chief Arul Rajoo Durar Raj, who is also Hawana 2025 project director. Elaborating, Fahmi said that the Online Safety Act (OnSA) 2024, which is set to be enforced soon, will grant MCMC the authority to take action against social media platforms that fail to fulfil their obligations. New MMC developments to be announced at Hawana
KUALA LUMPUR: The latest on the Malaysian Media Council (MMC) will be announced during the summit of the coming National Journalists' Day (Hawana) 2025, says Datuk Fahmi Fadzil ( pic ). The Communications Minister said the MMC was set up with the clear mission of defending media freedom, ensuring fair and responsible reporting, and serving as a channel for the people to air grievances against the media in a civil manner. He said the other notable achievement was when the Dewan Rakyat passed the Malaysian Media Council Bill 2024 in February. 'After more than 50 years of discussion, our country has finally succeeded in establishing the Malaysian Media Council, a self-regulatory body that brings together all types of media, including print, broadcast and digital,' he said at the Hawana 2025-Bernama Strategic Partners' Appreciation Ceremony and Official Launch of Bernama-Motorhome at Wisma Bernama here yesterday. Fahmi said with the setting up of the MMC and other initiatives, the government was laying a strong foundation for the future of the Malaysian media. Themed 'Journalism in the New Era: Embracing AI, Safeguarding Ethics', Hawana 2025 will be held at WTC KL from June 13 to 15 with the highlight of the celebration to be officiated by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim on June 14. More than 1,000 media practitioners, representatives of local journalist associations and media representatives from Asean member countries have been invited to bring together the professional media fraternity and industry experts while exchanging ideas and forging strategic relationships. Fahmi said the Bernama (Amendment) Act 2024 was gazetted on May 14 covering entities disseminating news via newspapers, publications, radio, TV and other mass communication platforms, including electronic and digital media. 'This amendment also aims to ensure Bernama's structure and functions are in line with developments in information and communications technology, as well as meeting the needs of the increasingly complex media industry,' he said. Meanwhile, May 29 has been gazetted as National Journalists' Day in conjunction with the publication of the first edition of Utusan Melayu newspaper that day back in 1939. At the event, Fahmi also launched the Bernama Motorhome-Mobile Studio, making it the first local media agency to utilise a recreational vehicle with mobile broadcast studio facilities that can be deployed to quickly disseminate news.
