IJM extends sustainability winning streak, bags three at CSR Malaysia Awards
KUALA LUMPUR: IJM Corp Bhd continued its winning streak in sustainability leadership after securing three major accolades at the 10th Sustainability and CSR Malaysia Awards 2025. In a statement, IJM said the company's commitment to responsible highway management and impactful community engagement was recognised with two significant awards for its managed highways. Lebuhraya Kajang-Seremban (LEKAS) was named Company of the Year for highway management, community and social care, while Lebuhraya Baru Pantai (NPE) received the Company of the Year for highway management, sustainability and community care award. Among NPE's key initiatives was the IJM Allianz Duo Highway Challenge 2024, aimed at promoting active lifestyles and encouraging safer, healthier community interaction with toll highways. Meanwhile, LEKAS was lauded for its role in organising the RHB LEKAS Highway Ride 2024 and supporting the Paralympic Council Malaysia's TambahEMAS Paris 2024 Campaign, which contributes to the development of national para-athletes. IJM toll division chief executive officer Wan Salwani Wan Yusoff was also honoured with the Asia Sustainability Personality Award (ESG Leadership) for her outstanding leadership and contributions to Malaysia's socio-economic transformation. She had previously received the Sustainability and Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Malaysia Personality of the Year (ESG Leadership Award) in 2024. Wan Salwani said sustainability is integral to its business strategy and critical for IJM's long-term success and nation-building efforts. She said the company's initiatives across Besraya, NPE, and LEKAS Highways are designed to create shared value, from promoting healthy lifestyles to uplifting underprivileged communities and supporting national athletes. "We recognise that continuous engagement with our stakeholders – communities, government, employees, and partners – is essential in driving meaningful impact," she added. The awards, judged by a panel of corporate and social leaders, recognise impactful and transparent CSR initiatives advancing Malaysia's sustainability agenda.

My DNA Test Revealed Something So Shocking, It Changed My Life Forever
Journalist Heather Buckner was connected to Kimberly Moore Francis and other subjects through 'DNA Identity Surprise and This NPE Life,' a Facebook group that supports people who've discovered unexpected family connections through DNA testing. The community, founded by Army veteran and retired RN Alesia Weiss, who uncovered her own DNA surprise in 2014, is now 4,100 members strong. It's funny how some moments get seared into your brain. I was getting tires put on my car when I got my DNA results. I had always been told that my twin brothers and I had the same father, but according to my results, I had a different father and was half Italian. I was distraught. I called my brother, crying, and he said, 'You're still my sister.' Originally, it was my mom who wanted to learn our history. She had grown up in foster care, so we decided to work on her family tree. When she found out her mother had died, she lost interest. Then, in October of 2021, my mom died; I sent off my own test at the end of December. In February of 2022 I got a close match, but when I messaged the person, I never heard back. Then in February 2023 I got another close match on MyHeritage: my biological dad's cousin. I messaged his son, who managed his MyHeritage profile, and said, Hey, I don't know how we match. He didn't either. I am from Florida and live in Kentucky, while they live in Rome. But the next April, his father went to Sicily to meet with my Italian dad. One day he messaged me, We have confirmation on who your father is. After that, an aunt on my father's side found me on social media and started video-calling me. I don't speak Italian — I was at lunch, sitting in my car, and I thought, I can't answer this. I don't even know how we would communicate. I think she was just super excited. I learned about my mom's relationship with my dad through conversations with my aunt. She had photo albums and sent me pictures of my dad and my mom on an Italian ship with the Italian flag in the back. When she was younger, my mom had lived in Florida, and my dad had been an Italian soldier training in Jacksonville, though he was there for only a few months. He still has pictures of my mom and him together. After I was born, she wrote him a letter and told him about me, including my name, Kimberly Ann. He was all over the place once he left Jacksonville — back then, how would she have found him? Then my mother met my stepfather. I think she just got into taking care of kids and moved on. My dad looked for me, but we'd moved too, so he was never able to find me. I didn't hear his voice until September 2023; that was our first video chat, and everybody was on it: my aunt and uncle and he were together and had my other aunt on another phone, a different video chat. It was crazy. In November, two of my three sons and I went to see the relatives in Sicily. When we got there, they were all in my dad's apartment, waiting. When I walked in, it was as if time were standing still. In seeing people who looked like me — with my hands, my eye color — I felt at home. Now I knew why I had curly hair! His first words to me were, 'Where have you been?' One day we were out for a walk and my aunts were behind us, laughing because we were both walking with our right feet pointed inward. I feel as if my identity is concrete now. It was a lot to process, a lot of crying. My kids just think it's cool. Their father is Jamaican, so they're Jamaican, Italian, American — a hodgepodge of everything. My father is a feisty little man who likes to joke. He's the king of Italian hand gestures. He drives a 1980s Panda at about 10 miles an hour. I'm his only child, as far as we know. My dad speaks English, but a lot of people in Italy don't, so thank goodness for translation apps. I've been trying to learn Italian. We went back last year, and I'm planning on going this year. It's as if we're trying to cram 50 years into a week. He does not like my nose ring, but when he sees my face, he lights up like a Christmas tree. When we visit, he takes me around to see all his friends. I know it makes him so happy. He is just proud of me, proud that I'm in his life. He's 81, so I don't know how long we'll have, and it's not as if he lives down the street. He's not on my birth certificate, so Italian citizenship is not something I can obtain; I would love to move there and spend an extended amount of time with him, but it doesn't seem possible. I struggle with that — what I missed out on culturally. My Italian relatives are very connected — everything is about family, and I never had that. What would my life have been like if I'd had this man around? He is loving and caring; my mom was a provider, but she was not a huggy, kissy, I-love-you–type of person. I struggle with her decision not to tell me about my father, because I could have been looking for him earlier had I known about him. She was a strong woman to be able to do what she did on her own, but I had a right to know my history, and I'm so glad I finally do. IJM continues to target more job wins for FY26
PETALING JAYA: IJM Corp Bhd is aiming for a higher project replenishment target for its financial year 2026 (FY26) despite missing its target again in its FY25 ended March 31, analysts say. UOB Kay Hian Research (UOBKH Research) said that the construction and property group guided for a higher replenishment range of between RM6bil and 7bil in FY26 after the release of its FY25 results, which beat expectations. A decent chunk of the replenishments will be from the delayed New Pantai Expressway (NPE) extension worth RM1.4bil and government housing project in Nusantara, Indonesia, estimated at RM1bil. Other key replenishment opportunities include the Penang LRT, the Penang Airport and road projects in Sabah and Sarawak. For FY25, IJM reported a core net profit of RM526.9mil, up 55.5% year-on-year following recognition of major construction milestones that saw its construction-segment earnings picking up significantly during 4Q25. Otherwise, UOBHK Research said that property sales had softened due to delayed launches, while infrastructure earnings declined due to lower throughput for tolls and ports. The construction segment's order book came in at RM11.1bil, comprising RM6.6bil from local jobs and RM4.5bil from foreign jobs in Singapore and Britain. Total job replenishments for the division stood at RM2.7bil. Meanwhile, Hong Leong Investment Bank Research (HLIB Research) said the recent approval for the long-awaited RM1.4bil NPE extension project will lift the group's order book. 'With this win, IJM has hit 40% of our FY26 contract-win assumption and we anticipate more wins this year mainly from data centres and the Nusantara project in Indonesia. 'On the balance-sheet front, IJM's low net gearing of 0.28 times provides ample space to fund the projects,' HLIB Research said. According to the research house, the NPE extension project will be fully funded by the company with no financial commitment from the government. The 15km extension will be fully elevated, linking three major highways – IJM's existing NPE and Besraya highways – with the upcoming LIKE Expressway. Construction will begin in the third quarter of this year with completion slated in 2029. Once operational, the NPE extension is poised to add to IJM's recurring income stream, said HLIB Research. As for the group's property division, UOBKH Research said total property sales came in at RM1.5bil in FY25 as delayed launches back in 3Q25 resulted in sales coming in at the lower end of IJM's target. Unbilled sales stood at RM1.54bil and going forward, IJM is targeting RM2bil in sales in FY26 in line with its previous guidance prior to the delays. As for the group's British ventures, contributions from its newly acquired JRL Group Holdings Ltd could begin as early as FY26. 'The current construction churn rate for the JRL Group is around £400mil with net margins of between 2% and 3%. 'While JRL is currently loss-making, this is largely due to balance-sheet issues causing project delays, which should be solved via a capital injection,' UOBKH Research said. The research house has a 'buy' rating on the stock with a higher target price of RM3.15 from RM3 before.

I've just been sent £170 fine for not paying a parking ticket … six years ago
I have received two letters from National Parking Enforcement Ltd (NPE) demanding £170 for failing 'to correctly use a pay & display machine' in a car park six years ago. It doesn't specify what I did incorrectly – I'm guessing I made a typo when entering my car reg because the buttons on the machines are so faded and Os and zeros look identical. I'm told I face court and a damaged credit rating if I don't stump up. ML, Fakenham It looks as though NPE is hurrying to collect the money before the clock runs down. Private parking operators have to issue a ticket within 14 days of the alleged contravention if sending by post. If it's taped to your windscreen and you fail to pay, the operator has an additional 56 days to send a notice to your home address. You say you never received any notice and were unaware of the alleged debt until the legal threats arrived. Private parking charges are not legally enforceable without a county court judgment, and the statute of limitations bars court action once six years have passed. Related: 'Pay here': the QR code 'quishing' scam targeting drivers The demands you received were sent days before the six years were up, and the deadline has since expired. Moreover, NPE has failed to provide evidence that you breached the terms and conditions. When you demanded details and proof of what you had done wrong it repeated, robotically, that you had used the machine incorrectly. It declared to me that it could not discuss cases with a third party, and refused to answer if, and when, it issued a parking charge notice and why it did not follow up earlier. I believe a court would take a dim view of this, even if it agreed to hear the case, so you could probably ignore it. But if you are worried, I suggest you write to NPE stating that you will not pay unless it provides all those details by a specific date. We welcome letters but cannot answer individually.
