ITV legend known for Coronation Street and Emmerdale role retires after 27 years

Metro14-05-2025

ITV have announced the retirement of John Whiston – the man in charge of both Coronation Street and Emmerdale, and the broadcaster's operations in the North.
Whiston has worked for the company for the last 27 years, though has worked in television as a whole for four decades.
'I've always said I've got the best job in TV. I used to say it privately in case ITV stopped paying me' he said in a statement released this morning.
'It has been nothing short of an honour, as well as a blast, to work on the Soaps this last decade or so.
'We've had joy, we've had fun and we've had seasons in the Sun. We've also had misery and mayhem. We've had motorway crashes, tram crashes and floods. We've had stories which have squeezed your heart till tears came out of your eyes.
'And we've covered pretty much anything and everything that people have to face in their own lives and we've done that with care and humanity.'
He continued: 'All that is down to the 600 or so people – the writers, crew, cast and editorial – who have kept the show on air and at an incredible quality day in day out.
'And it's them who have made my job ridiculously easy. Just don't tell ITV.'
His career kicked off at the BBC, where he was a General Trainee.
After a successful run on shows such as Time Watch and Omnibus, he then worked with Bob Mortimer and Vic Reeves to nurture comedy panel show Shooting Stars and sky-rocketed BBC2's viewing figures with the launch of theme nights.
John was also responsible for commissioning and executive producing Red Dwarf, The Mrs Merton Show, The Royle Family and reviving University Challenge.
He moved to Yorkshire Television in 1999 as Director of Programmes. This meant he was responsible for soaps Emmerdale and Heartbeat, while also focussing on Fat Friends and A Touch of Frost.
Eventually, his work also included Coronation Street, which saw him take on the role of Managing Director of Continuing Dramas and Head of ITV in the North in 2010.
Storylines during his stint have included live episodes – such as the aftermath of the 50th anniversary tram crash and Emmerdale's motorway pile up, plus a number of issue-based plots.
The boss will step down from his role at the end of the month, with a familiar name stepping into his shoes.
Coronation Street's Executive Producer Iain MacLeod has been promoted to Creative Director and will take on all of the editorial responsibility for the soaps.
Sharing the role with him is Matt Cleary, who will be Chief Operating Officer for Continuing Drama. He will be responsible for the day to day running of both production sites in Trafford and Leeds.
In his statement, John also referenced the upcoming reduction of episodes and crossover episode that will air in January.
'With the appointment of Iain MacLeod and Matt Cleary and with fantastic stories in place for the move to five episodes a week next January, and a never-before-seen mega mash-up between the two shows, the future for our ITV Soaps is set fair' he said.

'So it's the right time to leave and for me just to say thank you… to colleagues, to ITV and to our loyal, appreciative audience.'
Julian Bellamy, Managing Director ITV Studios added: 'John has been a brilliant, inspirational leader at ITV for over 27 years. He's pretty much done it all and done it brilliantly.
'His wisdom, creativity and razor-sharp editorial judgement has powered the soaps success. Alongside many others at ITV, I will miss John hugely and wish him the very best for the future.' More Trending
Kevin Lygo, Managing Director, Media and Entertainment said: 'John has been a stalwart of ITV, the North, and the soaps for a very long time.
'His fingerprints are all over Coronation Street and Emmerdale and they are all the better for it.
'Every twist and turn of the plotlines have had input from John and he will be sorely missed by all that have worked with him.

He continued: 'ITV and I have been very fortunate to work with such a wonderful man. We wish him well in the next episode of his life.'

Emmerdale horror as legend's child is found with sleeping tablets

A village youth is in danger (Picture: ITV) The daughter of Emmerdale legend Paddy Kirk's (Dominic Brunt) life is at risk when she's discovered with an open bottle of sleeping pills. Little Eve Dingle (Bella James) becomes collateral damage as granddad Bear Wolf (Joshua Richards) continues to struggle with his insomnia. Emmerdale boss Laura Shaw hinted that Bear would be at the heart of a surprising storyline earlier this month, telling a press conference: 'He's going to go off screen for a little while and go missing.' She continued: 'And when he comes back, what you'll see is a very different Bear in a really different situation and we're all going to be watching saying 'what the hell has happened here?''. While the exact circumstances surrounding Bear's 'disappearance' remain to be seen, it's likely to tie into his sudden insomnia. But this spells danger for Eve, who leaves Paddy horrified when he and Mandy Dingle (Lisa Riley) find her with Bear's freshly prescribed sleeping pills. Paddy is worried about dad Bear (Picture: ITV/Shutterstock) With Bear still suffering from insomnia, Paddy and Mandy persuade him to go and see Doctor Liam (Jonny McPherson). Returning home, he promises Eve some sweets if she stays quiet. She agrees, and he heads out. Growing bored, Eve sneaks into the kitchen where she finds Bear's box of sleeping tablets… Mandy and Paddy are horrified to find Eve's been at Bear's pills (Picture: ITV) Later, Mandy and Paddy wake up after an accidental nap. They're terrified when they see that Eve's been at Bear's box of pills while they were sleeping. Is Eve about to be taken seriously ill? Bear joined the soap in 2019 (Picture: ITV/Shutterstock) With Bear's storyline only just beginning, this will likely herald his promised 'disappearance' from the village. He's been keeping a low profile in recent months, living at Tenants with Paddy, Mandy and Liam – all seemingly forgiven since he discovered that Mandy's side-hustle as a financial dominatrix. Will he be able to forgive himself in anything happens to Eve? And what will happen to him in his upcoming absence? UK's oldest white-tailed eagle dies aged 32

The eagle, a female named Frisa, hatched on Mull in 1992 and paired up with her long-term mate Skye in 1997. The pair raised their first chick on the island in 1998, and went on to raise a total of 25 chicks in their 28 years of partnership. Frisa was known to 'millions' thanks to appearances in a number of BBC programmes over the last two decades, beginning with the very first episode of Springwatch in 2005. Her death was announced on the latest episode of the programme on June 2. RSPB ambassador Dave Sexton, who spent 21 of his 36-year RSPB career working with white-tailed eagles on Mull, described Frisa as 'a very special bird who had touched the hearts of millions who saw her both on TV and in the wild'. He added: 'As Frisa got on in years, I dreaded the day I would visit her territory and find her gone. 'Sadly, that day has come and I feel like I've lost a friend. 'But what a wonderful life she had with her mate Skye. Together they raised 25 chicks, many of which are now breeding far and wide across Scotland. 'She was a true icon for white-tailed eagles and she'll always hold a special place in my heart.' RSPB Scotland said Frisa has not been seen since last year, leading experts to believe she has died either of natural causes, or following an altercation with another eagle. It is with a heavy heart we announce the death of Frisa, the UK's oldest wild White-tailed Eagle. This clip shows Frisa on the very first series of Springwatch in 2005, feeding some of the 25 chicks she raised during her lifetime. Catch the full story on tonight's episode. — RSPB Scotland (@RSPBScotland) June 2, 2025 Skye has also been spotted with another younger female eagle on Mull, which further suggests that Frisa has passed away as white-tailed eagles mate for life. At 31 years of age, Skye now takes on the mantle as the UK's oldest wild white-tailed eagle. Frisa's mother Blondie successfully raised the very first white-tailed eagle to fledge in Scotland following the reintroduction of the species in 1975. The species previously became extinct in the UK in 1918 when the last known native wild bird was shot in Shetland. A reintroduction project on the Isle of Rum using chicks donated from Norway has since seen the species re-establish a self-sustaining population in Scotland. There are now estimated to be up to 200 pairs of white-tailed eagles in the UK.

Huge EastEnders twist as George's whereabouts on Christmas finally revealed

The floor falls from beneath Elaine Knight's (Harriet Thorpe) feet in EastEnders next week, as she learns where her husband George (Colin Salmon) ran off to on Christmas Day. As viewers of the BBC soap will remember, every member of the Beale and Knight clans provided an alibi for their whereabouts on the festive evening. That was because wicked Cindy Beale (Michelle Collins) had been viciously attacked with a snow shovel, and until February, nobody knew who was responsible. It later transpired that Kathy Cotton (Gillian Taylforth) was the culprit, but that left a lot of questions as to where everyone else was on the fateful night – and whether they were telling the truth. George told his family that he was partaking in an illegal underground boxing match, but also later asked brother Kojo (Dayo Koleosho) to back up his alibi. He then admitted to daughter Gina (Francesca Henry) that he wasn't at the fight. In scenes that air this week, Elaine is left furious when he helps out with Cindy's relaunch of The Prince Albert, and her rival karaoke party flops, and by this time next week, things aren't any better between the couple. Tension is simmering behind the bar at The Vic as she silently fumes over George lending a hand his ex-wife a hand with her re-opening. Elaine decides to show her husband how committed she is to him, and presents a touching gift honouring his boxing past. However, as they relish in happiness, his son Junior (Micah Balfour) storms in and drops a bombshell. At Christmas, George secretly visited his ex Sabrina – Junior's mum. An argument escalates when he admits that Sabrina kissed him, although he pushed her away. Elaine declares that she's had enough and throws him out of the family home. An emotional George heads out to find Junior to vent his frustration, but instead crosses paths with Cindy, who – perhaps conveniently – is there to offer a shoulder to cry on. Later, Elaine tries to make peace and goes looking for George… only to spot him on the balcony of The Albert in a very warm embrace with Cindy. Heartbroken, she retreats to the café to gather herself. But things go from bad to worse when she returns and Felix lets slip that George and Cindy left together. More Trending Believing that he has betrayed her, Elaine decides not to wallow in self pity and calls up someone for for a drink. While she waits, a cheeky punter named Stephen tries his luck, but is quickly brushed to one side by Elaine's old pal Drew Peacock (Paul Clayton), the drag queen who had a secret relationship with her late husband. Drew gives Elaine a much-needed pep talk, reminding her to remain strong and not let Cindy get her down. Boosted by Drew's words, Elaine makes a shocking decision. View More » What does she do?
