SME Sabah, IEM Sabah strengthen ties to boost innovation and technical collaboration
KOTA KINABALU (May 28): The Small and Medium Enterprises Association of Sabah (SME Sabah) paid a courtesy visit to the Institution of Engineers Malaysia (IEM) Sabah Branch at its office in Damai Point, Kota Kinabalu, to foster closer collaboration between the SME and engineering communities in Sabah.
The meeting, held at 10:30am on Wednesday, featured a formal introduction to SME Sabah, a briefing on the upcoming SME Sabah Conference, and an engaging discussion on potential areas for collaboration, especially in innovation, technical capacity building and industry engagement.
Notably, IEM Sabah has officially acknowledged and endorsed the conference, further underlining its commitment to cross-sector partnership and professional development.
In support of this initiative, IEM Sabah has approved 6.5 CPD (Continuing Professional Development) points for engineers who attend the upcoming conference, offering a valuable opportunity for professional enrichment.

The session concluded on a positive note, with both parties expressing optimism for long-term engagement to boost the development of local industries through strategic collaboration between SMEs and the engineering sector.
The SME Sabah Conference, a flagship event of SME Sabah, is expected to bring together professionals, entrepreneurs, and policymakers to discuss growth strategies, innovation, and sustainability.

IEM Sabah supports RMK13 by advancing youth development in Sabah
Tan With the launch of the 13th Malaysia Plan (RMK13) in Parliament, the government has outlined a bold vision to reshape the nation's development framework, emphasizing fairness, resilience and technology-driven progress. Behind every highway, water plant, or green energy system lies a less visible but crucial foundation: engineering talent. As the leading professional engineering body in Sabah, the Institution of Engineers Malaysia (IEM Sabah) is taking proactive steps to support RMK13 by strengthening the development of local engineering human capital. IEM Sabah has proposed three strategic initiatives to help the government advance talent development across the state. 1. Upskilling TVET Trainers for Industry 4.0 Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) is the bedrock for building a skilled workforce. However, to produce future-ready graduates, TVET trainers themselves must be technologically advanced. IEM Sabah is going to collaborate with MARA, the Ministry of Higher Education (KPT), and the Ministry of Rural and Regional Development (KKDW) to establish an upskilling program for Sabah's TVET trainers. Courses will focus on Automation and control systems, Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Internet of Things (IoT), Smart building technologies (e.g., BIM), Renewable energy and sustainable engineering IEM also proposes the creation of an industry-academia interface platform to ensure that TVET syllabi remain aligned with real-world engineering needs. 2. Structured Internships and Mentorships to Prepare Young Engineers A common issue faced by graduates is the 'qualification but no experience' gap. IEM Sabah is going to launch a Structured Internship and Mentorship Program, in collaboration with key agencies such as the Public Works Department (JKR), Department of Irrigation and Drainage (DID), and local councils, GLS and private sectors. Under this program: • Over 300 engineering students annually will be placed in real infrastructure projects. • Each student will be matched with an experienced mentor engineer for career and technical guidance. • Additional 'Engineering Graduate Bootcamps' will help fresh graduates transition into the workforce. 3. Strengthening Soft Skills and Professional Ethics Engineering is not just about calculations and drawings. Successful engineers must also have the following skills and professional ethics such as ethical and responsible, effective communicators, good team players and project-minded and technically literate competency. To address this, IEM Sabah will offer training on the following subjects: Engineering ethics and duty of care, Technical reporting and contract basics, Public communication for infrastructure projects, Professional English and Bahasa Malaysia communication. These skills are essential for building trust and accountability in the public infrastructure delivery system. In Conclusion: Engineering Human Capital Is Sabah's Growth Engine Whether we speak of better roads, clean water, green energy, or digital infrastructure, none can materialize without capable, local engineers. 100 attend JKR seminar on pavement construction, maintenance technology.

It was jointly organised by JKR Sabah, IEM Sabah, and the Pavement Knowledge Sharing Community Sabah (PKSC), with support from technology partner Wirtgen Malaysia. The full-day event featured intensive technical discussions on the latest methods in pavement construction and maintenance. The opening speech was delivered by Ir. Wong CT of JKR Sabah, who is the Head of the Technical and Quality Control Division for the Pan Borneo Highway. Keynote presentations were delivered by Ir. Pok SL, Managing Director of Wirtgen Malaysia, who shared real-world insights on topics such as Cold In-Place Pavement Recycling (CIPR), Thin Gap Graded Overlay Asphalt (VTO), best practices in road base construction, and innovative approaches to address asphalt segregation. Shawn Lim, Head of Parts at Wirtgen Malaysia, introduced participants to advanced Telematics Technologies designed for real-time fleet monitoring and efficient road maintenance operations. The seminar concluded with a closing address by Ir. Ts. Tan KJ, JP, representing IEM Sabah Branch. He commended the collaborative efforts between government agencies, industry players, and professional bodies in raising engineering standards in Sabah. 'The seminar exemplifies how collaboration and knowledge sharing can transform our road engineering practices. Through innovation, technology, and continuous learning, we can deliver sustainable and high-quality infrastructure to the people of Sabah,' said Ir. Tan during his speech. Certificates of appreciation were presented to the speakers, and CPD hours were awarded to participants by IEM Sabah. Engineering, geology groups join forces

Kota Kinabalu: The Institute of Geology Malaysia (IGM) Sabah Chapter and the Institution of Engineers Malaysia (IEM) Sabah have forged closer ties to tackle geological and engineering challenges. This was achieved during a courtesy visit by IGM Sabah to IEM Sabah branch office in Damai Point Commercial Centre here on Tuesday, marking a significant step towards strengthening collaboration between two of Malaysia's key professional bodies in engineering and geology. The IGM Sabah Chapter delegation was led by its Chairman, Prof. Ts. Gr. Dr Rodeano bin Roslee, alongside Vice Chairman Dr. A. Khairut Termizi, Lee Kiun You, Rollix, and Khairee Saad, all representing the Industry and Professionalism section. They were warmly received by IEM Sabah's leadership, including its Chairman Datuk Ir. Ts. Mohd Yaakob Jaafar, together with the Vice Chairman 1 Ir. Ts. Tan KJ, and its Vice Chairman 2 Ir. Emphasis was placed on the growing need for synergy between geologists and engineers particularly in tackling contemporary issues such as climate resilience, geological stability assessments, seismic hazard mitigation, natural resource development, and environmental sustainability. Both institutions explored opportunities for collaboration, including organizing joint technical seminars and training programs, sharing knowledge on geological hazards and mitigation, engaging in public awareness campaigns on geology and engineering safety, and supporting the professional development of young engineers and geoscientists. Datuk Ir. Ts. Mohd Yaakob expressed his appreciation for the visit and reaffirmed IEM Sabah's commitment to multidisciplinary cooperation for the advancement of the professions and the well-being of the community. 'Sabah, with its complex geological landscape, stands to benefit greatly from closer ties between geologists and engineers,' he said. Echoing this sentiment, Prof. Dr. Rodeano said effective engineering solutions must be informed by sound geological understanding.
