Lokesh Kanagaraj reacts to Rajinikanth's comment that ‘Coolie looked like Thalapathi to me': ‘Hearing him say those words…'

Indian Express14-07-2025
With exactly one month left for the worldwide release of director Lokesh Kanagaraj's 'Superstar' Rajinikanth-led action thriller Coolie, anticipation has already gone through the roof. One of the most awaited Indian movies of the year, Coolie not only marks the first collaboration between Rajinikanth and Lokesh but also features several massive stars, including Nagarjuna, Upendra, Soubin Shahir, Sathyaraj and Shruti Haasan, with a cameo appearance by Bollywood icon Aamir Khan.
While Lokesh is busy giving the film its final touches, a remark made by 'Thalaivar' after watching a cut of Coolie has left him elated, confirming that what he set out to achieve has been accomplished. Mentioning that director Mani Ratnam's Thalapathi (1991) is his most favourite Rajinikanth film, Lokesh recently shared that what he tried to do in Coolie was emulate the same artistic and commercial balance that the 1991 gangster drama achieved.

'After watching the film in the dubbing studio, he (Rajinikanth) hugged me and said, 'It looked like Thalapathi for me!' That made my day, and that was the night I slept very peacefully after many months. That is what I was telling my friends, too. If at all, I am doing a film with Rajini sir, it has to be somewhere close to Thalapathi. I cannot write a film on par with Mani sir's quality, as his film and writing is unmatched… But I get a little satisfaction when we compare that film with this one. Listening to the same words from Rajini sir was an achievement,' she shared during a chat with The Hollywood Reporter India.
Opening up about his experience working with the ultimate superstar, Lokesh said: 'I loved writing for Rajini sir. I initially wrote a fantasy film for him, and he immediately said okay to it, but assembling it took so much time… it would've taken at least a year and a half to go ahead. You can write anything for the actor because he is larger than life. Even though I have tried a lot of new techniques and styles in the film, it will still be a Rajini sir film. I also don't want to change that.'

Fans convinced Sivakarthikeyan features in Rajinikanth's Coolie due to new footage in Hindi trailer

A video taken in a theatre as the Hindi version of Lokesh Kanagaraj's Rajinikanth-starrer Coolie plays is making the rounds on social media. The video shows additional footage that did not feature in the trailer that was released on YouTube. Fans are convinced that the man seen in the footage is Sivakarthikeyan and that he plays a cameo in the film. There have been rumours for a while now that Sivakarthikeyan is playing a role in Rajinikanth 's Coolie. New footage added to Coolie trailer The video shows a man with a thick head of hair from behind talking to workers in an industrial area. He also waves what looks like a fishhook at them. The short clip comes almost towards the end of the trailer without revealing who this character is. The person sharing the video on X (formerly Twitter) wrote, 'New footage of Deva flashback added in #CoolieThePowerHouse trailer at PVR today.' While Upendra's first look from Coolie showed him holding a fishhook, fans are still convinced it's either Rajinikanth or Sivakarthikeyan in a special cameo that has been kept under wraps. Sivakarthikeyan in Coolie? Most fans, however, seemed convinced that the man in the video is not Rajinikanth, who plays Deva in Coolie, but Sivakarthikeyan. One person re-shared the video, writing, 'Is it SK naa…Extra clip added in if @Siva_Kartikeyan naa in Coolie.' Another fan seemed convinced it is true, writing, 'Looks like Sivakarthikeyan.' 'Why does he look like Siva Karthikeyan?' questioned one, while another fan speculated, 'Looks like Sivakarthikeyan is young thalaivar in coolie?' Some fans also wondered if the clip was of a de-aged Rajinikanth, Nagarjuna or Upendra, based on the footage. In the past, Sivakarthikeyan has denied being a part of Coolie. When asked about a picture he took with Lokesh and the team of Coolie, he told Pinkvilla in November last year, 'I had gone to the shooting spot. I meet Lokesh often because we are in a common group. I had gone to Coolie shooting spot because the shooting is happening right opposite my house. So, once I go home…I'll definitely go there. Coolie is my Thalaivar's film, that is the only connection I have with it. I'm not in the film.' About Coolie Nothing much is known about Lokesh's Coolie, and he has denied that it is a part of his cinematic universe, LCU. It stars Rajinikanth, Nagarjuna, Soubin Shahir, Upendra, Shruti Haasan, Sathyaraj, and Aamir Khan in the lead roles, while Rachita Ram, Reba Monica John, Junior MGR, Kanna Ravi, Monisha Blessy, Kaali Venkat, and Charle play supporting roles. The film will be released in theatres on 14 August and will clash with Ayan Mukerji's War 2, starring Hrithik Roshan and Jr NTR.

Dev Anand lost all his money after his most ambitious film with Shabana Azmi, Zeenat Aman failed: ‘In 15 minutes, he knew it was all gone'

Among the many greats and legends of Bollywood, some names stand head and shoulders above the rest, and Dev Anand is one of them. The charming actor continues to be one of the most celebrated actors of Indian cinema and was part of some of the most iconic films of Bollywood. His nephew, director Shekhar Kapur, recently talked about how his off-screen persona was nothing short of inspiring and how the man dealt with the failure of the most ambitious project of his career. The Bandit Queen director made an appearance on Filmfare's YouTube channel and shared how anyone around Dev could learn so much about life by just observing him. He said, 'You learn from seeing someone like that deal with his life. I remember that Ishk Ishk Ishk had just been released, and he had put his own money into it. I went to the premiere because I had a small part in it. We came back to the Oberoi hotel, and I sat in his room while he was getting calls from everyone in the industry. Naturally people congratulated him and told him what a fantastic film he had made, but soon reality started setting in. Someone told him over the phone that people got up and left the theatres while his film was still playing.' 'It was his most ambitious film ever, and he had put all of his money into it. Naturally, when the film didn't do well, he lost it all. I saw how his facial expressions changed in those 15 minutes as he realised that his money was gone and his film had failed. He went to the bathroom, and he must have been gone for hardly 5 minutes when he came back out and said, 'Shekhar! 'Chal ek nayi film banate hai; abhi idea socha maine.' (Let's make a new film; I just thought of an idea). He just wiped all of it away, and I wanted to learn that skill from him, and you might have found that in some of my films,' said Shekhar. Shekhar shared another small anecdote with the viewers about Anand's carefree attitude and said, 'I remember having breakfast with Dev uncle, and the producer was there too. He asked the producer if he had to sell anything to make his latest film, and the producer narrated a long list of items he had to let go of, including his wife's jewellery and his home. Without skipping a beat, Dev's uncle said, 'Acha hai, aise hi banti hai filmein' (That's good. This is how you make films.' Directed by Dev Anand himself in 1974, the film had an all-star cast including Anand, Shabana Azmi, Zeenat Aman, Zarina Wahab, Jeevan, and Kabir Bedi. The music had been composed by RD Burman.
