Flattish start points to range-bound trading

The Stara day ago
KUALA LUMPUR: The FBM KLCI maintained an uncertain undertone to open a fraction higher on Tuesday, pointing to another session of range-bound trading amid the ongoing consolidation.
The index of Malaysian blue chips was up 1.7 points to 1,526.29, inching slightly higher on the back of Wall Street's mostly positive performance overnight.
US equities prices were pushed higher on the back of positive corporate earnings, bringing the S&P500 and Nasdaq to fresh record levels, even as the Dow Jones ended flat.
The US rally may lead to a spillover effect on Asian markets, which could be seeing a resurgence of positive sentiment going by recent firm prices.
In the headlines recently, Sunway Construction has been sold down on news one of its employees was being investigated by the country's anti-graft agency for bribery.
However, analysts say the price weakness could be only temporary given the isolated nature of the incident, which is not expected to impact the company's financials.
"Despite the MACC's investigation into a RM180mil data centre project in Johor, we view this as a buy-on-dip opportunity for Sunway Construction, Sunway and other data centre-related counters, supported by their strong fundamentals, solid order book providing 2–3 years of earnings visibility, and the ongoing data centre boom in the country," said Malacca Securities.
As at 9.15am, shares in Sunway Construction were down one sen to RM5.48 while parent Sunway dipped two sen to RM4.87.
Among the actives on the market, NexG rose one sen to 51.5 sen, TWL dropped 0.5 sen to 2.5 sen and iCents gained 2.5 sen to 40 sen.

‘Empower MSMEs in digital commerce'

KUALA LUMPUR: The Wawasan Institute for Policy Excellence (Wawasan) is urging a more con-structive and collaborative approach to discussions surrounding Malaysia's digital commerce landscape. The association said that at a time when local micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) face mounting competition, platforms that actively invest in enabling seller success must be recognised and supported. Rather than focusing narrowly on pricing debates, Wawasan believes attention should be placed on how digital platforms are empowering Malaysian MSMEs by offering access to training, AI-powered analytics, performance insights, and trusted delivery and transaction systems. 'We need to move away from a binary framing of sellers versus platforms. In reality, both are deeply interconnected, and so are their futures,' Wawasan founding director Tarmizi Anuwar said in a statement. He said a strong digital economy is only possible when sellers, buyers, and platforms work together to build trust, efficiency and growth. Wawasan noted that some platforms in Malaysia have made significant investments to strengthen the seller ecosystem. For instance, widely available seller education programmes such as free online classes and masterclasses on campaign participation, digital marketing, and content creation have helped many small businesses upskill and stay competitive. Real-time tools that provide data on product performance, buyer demographics, and market trends also help sellers optimise their listings and pricing more effectively. Additionally, improvements in logistics infrastructure such as same-day or next-day delivery options and self-collection at designated pickup points, have become increasingly common. These services not only benefit consumers but also directly improve order completion rates and reduce cancellations for sellers. Many platforms also offer built-in buyer protection and return mechanisms, which reinforce consumer trust and, in turn, drive repeat purchases, ultimately benefiting seller performance. 'These features aren't just technical upgrades; they're strategic investments into seller success. 'Every ringgit spent improving logistics or buyer confidence helps sellers secure more loyal customers,' added Tarmizi. As Malaysia continues to pursue its MyDigital agenda, Wawasan believes that platforms prioritising local MSME development should be part of the national strategy. These are not just online marketplaces, but digital infrastructure partners that help entrepreneurs grow sustainably. Wawasan also warned that as international players continue to enter the Southeast Asian market, Malaysian MSMEs will face increasing price pressure. Undermining the local platforms that support sellers could leave small businesses more vulnerable to undercutting by foreign competitors offering low-cost goods without reinvesting in the local economy. 'We need to recognise that Malaysia's MSMEs don't just need a place to sell, they need partners that help them grow, compete and scale. 'When platforms offer the tools, infrastructure, and insights to do this, it benefits not just the seller, but the whole economy,' added Tarmizi. Wawasan concluded by calling for open dialogue and partnership among the government, platforms, and seller associations to build a resilient, inclusive, and competitive e-commerce landscape. 'The health of our digital economy depends on how well we collaborate. When platforms succeed in lifting sellers, we all win. That's the spirit Malaysia must move forward with,' Tarmizi said.

Bursa stages rebound to close at intra-day high on late bargain-hunting

KUALA LUMPUR: Late bargain hunting of consumer-related stocks pushed Bursa Malaysia to close at its intraday high on Wednesday, allowing the market to recover losses in the previous two sessions. At 5 pm, the FTSE Bursa Malaysia KLCI (FBM KLCI) bounced 10.39 points, or 0.68 per cent, to close at an intra-day high of 1,529.79 from yesterday's close of 1,519.40. The benchmark index opened 0.08 of a point higher at 1,519.56 and moved between 1,519.48 and 1,529.79 throughout the trading session. Gainers led losers in the broader market 627 to 387, while 496 counters were unchanged and 969 untraded, with seven suspended. Turnover jumped to 3.27 billion shares worth RM2.26 billion from 2.82 billion shares worth RM2.05 billion on Tuesday. UOB Kay Hian Wealth Advisors Sdn Bhd head of investment research Mohd Sedek Jantan said the FBM KLCI closed the day on a firmer footing as the market sentiment was lifted following Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's announcement of a one-off RM100 cash handout, which drove renewed interest in consumer-related stocks. "As a result, the consumer sector led gains among FBM KLCI constituents,' he told Bernama. Mohd Sedek said regional markets also posted broad-based gains, supported by improved sentiment after the United States agreed to impose a reduced 15 per cent import duty on selected Japanese goods, which exclude strategic items such as steel and aluminium, which remain subject to elevated tariffs. "This marked a de-escalation from the previously threatened 25 per cent levy scheduled to take effect on Aug 1 in the absence of a bilateral agreement,' he added. Similarly, Rakuten Trade Sdn Bhd equity research vice-president Thong Pak Leng said the key index closed higher as major regional bourses staged a strong rebound after US President Donald Trump announced that he had completed a "massive deal' with Japan. "Back home, despite heightened external volatility, we believe Malaysian equities remain fundamentally resilient. The benchmark index is attempting to reclaim the 1,530 level, and a breakout supported by strong volume could pave the way for a sustained upward trajectory. "As such, we maintain our weekly FBM KLCI target at between 1,510-1,540,' he added. Regionally, Hong Kong's Hang Seng advanced 1.13 per cent to close at 25,413.48, Singapore's Straits Times Index improved 0.47 per cent to 4,227.85, and South Korea's Kospi gained 0.44 per cent to 3,183.77. Japan's Nikkei 225 rallied 3.51 per cent to 41,171.32. Of the heavyweight stocks, Maybank earned six sen to RM9.59, Tenaga Nasional was 16 sen better at RM13.94, and CIMB gained 12 sen to RM6.67. IHH Healthcare improved two sen to RM6.62, CelcomDigi added four sen to RM3.83, while Public Bank dropped two sen to RM4.29. Top gainers were led by Nestle, which jumped 94 sen to RM76.90, while Fraser and Neave and Hong Leong Industries added 26 sen to RM28.70 and RM13.26, respectively. UMW was 19 sen better at RM2.24, while Vitrox and Sam Engineering gained 17 sen each to RM4.74 and RM4.19. Among the most active stocks, NexG gained 1.5 sen to 52 sen, while Tanco and Ekovest both added half-a-sen to 91.5 sen and 39.5 sen, respectively. Zetrix was two sen better at 94.5 sen, and Green Packet topped up half-a-sen to five sen.
