People deletes Olivia Munn story after Ms. Rachel comments draw 'threats'

Yahoo14 hours ago

In a rare move, People magazine deleted a story from its website on Wednesday after it triggered 'violent' threats against its subject, the actress Olivia Munn, and her family.
The story was about Munn's distaste for children's television and bore a headline specifically citing the popular YouTuber Ms. Rachel — which apparently triggered some fans. 'There is no excuse for these abhorrent attacks, and we will always prioritize safety above all else,' the publication acknowledged in a statement explaining the decision to remove a story.
It's an unusual move for any news outlet to delete, rather than amend or update, a story — even People, which is generally considered a friendly go-to outlet for celebrities to share their stories. When asked for further information about removing the article, a People representative pointed back to its original statement.
The post was drawn from the magazine's recent interview with Munn for a cover story, which published online June 4. The 44-year-old actress, who was promoting her new Apple TV+ series, talked about life with her husband, 42-year-old comedian John Mulaney, their children — a 3-year-old boy and 8-month-old girl — as well as her 2023 breast cancer diagnosis. People also published several separate exclusive items using material from the Munn interview, including one in which she discussed her fertility treatments, and another post headlined, 'Olivia Munn Doesn't Let Her Kids Watch Ms. Rachel. Here's Why.'
In the story, according to sites that repeated quotes from it before it was deleted, Munn shared her irritation with children's TV programming. She specifically cited Ms. Rachel, a major celebrity to young children and their parents.
'I know kids love [Ms. Rachel], but the thing is, if I can't watch it, I'm not going to spend the rest of my life going crazy,' Munn said, and added she was not a fan of 'Blue's Clues' or 'Spider-Man' either. (She did admit a tolerance for 'Daniel Tiger's Neighborhood,' because it helped her son prepare for the arrival of a baby sister.)
However, the framing of the People headline drew attention on social media, especially given that Ms. Rachel, whose full name is Rachel Griffin Accurso, has been in the news for speaking out about the plight of children in Gaza — though it's unclear if this topic was even addressed in the People story. All of this was surely heightened by the strong feelings many fans harbor about Mulaney and Munn's relationship, and its timing relative to his divorce from an artist, Anna Marie Tendler, with her own significant social media following.
Various publications and social media accounts started regurgitating Munn's comments, and Accurso herself expressed disappointment when she left a comment on People's Instagram post, now disappeared as well:
'WHO CARES?! I'd rather you cover me advocating for kids in Gaza who are literally starving, largest cohort of child amputees in modern history, thousands & thousands killed — no medical care, no education, no homes… do better!!!' Accurso wrote, according to multiple reports. 'Not against [Munn] at all and don't care that she doesn't want to watch the show — all my love to her and her family — disappointed in the outlets.' Later, she wrote on her own Instagram account that she and Munn had spoken and were on good terms.
'Please be kind to Olivia & her precious family,' Accurso wrote. 'I don't believe in hate, attacks or hurtful comments.'
Munn also criticized the coverage. 'To Ms Rachel and your fans, I hear and respect the passion behind your support. I never anticipated the media would single out one small thing I said and distort it like they have,' she wrote in an Instagram story earlier this week. 'Every parent understands the importance of finding meaningful programming that helps us connect with our kids. I don't want something taken out of context to be a moment that steals even a minute of joy for anyone.'
Mulaney weighed in Wednesday, calling for a stop to the 'violent and threatening' comments that Munn had been receiving in online comments and direct messages. 'An innocent comment my wife Olivia Munn made about what children's programs we like has somehow — unbelievably — been conflated with not caring about the deaths of children in Gaza,' he posted on Instagram.
'The people doing this are so wildly out of line and so unhelpful to any conversation. You took a nothing comment to a dark and dangerous place. This kind of behavior isn't activism.'
Accurso has been creating educational children's content on YouTube, where she has more than 15.2 million subscribers, since 2019. With the help of silly and cheerful music, Ms. Rachel teaches children how to spell and use the bathroom, while also offering lessons on emotional support.
Outside of her YouTube show, Accurso has been outspoken about Gaza, which led to backlash from right-wing media commentators and StopAntisemitism, a prominent pro-Israel group, which called on the U.S. attorney general to investigate the children's entertainer. (Accurso said earlier this month that she stands against 'all forms of hate.')
But, Accurso told WBUR, 'I wouldn't be Ms. Rachel if I didn't deeply care about all kids. And I would risk everything, and I will risk my career over and over to stand up for them.'

"I can multi-task, especially during TIMEOUTS" - Stephen A. Smith lies while addressing viral photo of him playing solitaire during Game 4 of 2025 Finals

"I can multi-task, especially during TIMEOUTS" - Stephen A. Smith lies while addressing viral photo of him playing solitaire during Game 4 of 2025 Finals originally appeared on Basketball Network. ESPN's Stephen A. Smith was at Gainbridge Fieldhouse to watch Game 4 of the 2025 NBA Finals between the Oklahoma City Thunder and the Indiana Pacers. But while he was supposed to pay close attention to what was happening on the basketball court in order to analyze the game correctly, he was caught playing solitaire on his phone while the game was underway. Advertisement When the photo went viral, Smith immediately took to X (formerly Twitter) to defend himself by saying he was merely looking for something else to do during a timeout. "Yep! That's me," wrote Smith. "Who would've thought… I can multi-task. Especially during TIMEOUTS! Hope y'all are enjoying the NBA Finals. This is going 7 games now, peeps!" Caught in a lie Another netizen roasted Smith with a video of the incident — it was clear that he was playing the card game on his phone while the basketball game was underway. Stephen A. then posted a second tweet — a screenshot of his mobile phone screen, trying to show that he was half playing games and half watching the Finals. Kevin Durant, one of the players who has been beefing with Smith for a long time, couldn't help but react by reposting the photo on his Instagram account. Smith infamously called Durant's signing with the Golden State Warriors in 2016 the "weakest move" by an NBA superstar. Last year, he also questioned Durant's ability to lead a team and the superstar forward went on to call Smith a "clown." Smith vs. Haliburton Most recently, Smith beefed with Pacers star Tyrese Haliburton after the latter criticized the NBA media after Game 3. Advertisement The Pacers star called out the NBA talking heads, saying most of them don't know anything about basketball. Even if Haliburton did not target a specific name in his criticism, Smith assumed that he was talking about him. Instead of answering Hali's comments with arguments, Smith boasted about his 30-year broadcasting career and warned Haliburton that many have criticized him, but no one has ever shut him down. "Unfortunately, a lot of guys are not as fortunate as I am from this standpoint," Smith said. "They have to talk to you. I don't get paid to talk to you. I get paid to talk about you. Whether I speak or whatever it is, you don't stop this train. It is a locomotive because, you know, we've been No.1 for 13 straight years." Unfortunately, Haliburton hasn't reacted to the video of Smith playing solitaire during Game 4 of the Finals. After all, he has more important things on his mind. Advertisement The Pacers allowed the Thunder to steal Game 4 111-104 after a late comeback led by Shai Gilgeous-Alexander. The series is now tied at two games apiece. Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis Step Out in Coordinated Looks at Trooping the Colour

Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis are celebrating Trooping the Colour Kate Middleton and Prince William's children have all attended the military parade since they were babies The moment marks the Prince and Princess of Wales' children's second major appearance of the year so farPrince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis are making their royal return to Trooping the Colour. On June 14, Kate Middleton and Prince William's three children stepped out to attend Trooping the Colour in London. Prince George, 11, Princess Charlotte, 10, and Prince Louis, 7, have all attended the military parade, which recognizes the monarch's official birthday each year, since they were toddlers. The royal siblings wore outfits that coordinated perfectly with their parents. Princess Charlotte matched mom Princess Kate in an aqua dress, while Prince George and Prince Louis sported suits with red ties, coordinating with dad Prince William's military uniform. Charlotte also wore a special touch — the same brooch gifted by her late great-grandmother, Queen Elizabeth, which she previously wore to the monarch's funeral in September 2022. After arriving by car at Buckingham Palace, the trio rode in a horse-drawn carriage with Princess Kate down The Mall in London. Princess Charlotte sat next to their mother, while Prince George and Prince Louis rode side-by-side, facing backward. The children's longtime nanny, Maria Borallo, was also seen on the parade ground in her signature tan uniform. In recent years, Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis have participated in the parade in two major ways. Since 2022, the children have traveled by carriage down The Mall to watch the pageantry at Horse Guards Parade. They also have appeared on the balcony of Buckingham Palace for the grand finale — the flypast performed by the Royal Air Force — since they were young. Last year, Prince Louis stole the show by dancing, yawning and playing with curtain cords while watching the actual trooping of the "colour" (or regimental presentation of flags) from the Major General's Office overlooking Horse Guards Parade. Another breakout moment was when Princess Charlotte snapped into big sister mode and told her little brother Louis how to stand on the palace balcony as the national anthem played. Trooping the Colour marks Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis' second major royal event of the year. The children joined their parents in a surprise public appearance on May 5, attending the parade and flypast that kickstarted the U.K.'s commemorations for the 80th anniversary of VE Day. The event fell two weeks after Easter, when William and Kate skipped the royal family's traditional Easter church outing to instead mark the holiday privately in Norfolk, where they have a country home. Can't get enough of PEOPLE's Royals coverage? to get the latest updates on Kate Middleton, Meghan Markle and more! The Prince and Princess of Wales are known to strike a careful balance around raising their children in the royal spotlight while prioritizing their privacy and family time. George, Charlotte and Louis only attend a handful of public events each year, and William and Kate clear their work calendars when their children are off from school. Speaking to Hello! magazine in 2024, royal biographer Ingrid Seward said, "Like many famous parents, they are cautious about exposing the children to too much scrutiny in this digital age. They know they must produce the children at certain times, but I think they very much keep them under wraps the rest of the time." Offering comment on George, Charlotte and Louis' sibling bond, Seward said, "The three of them seem to get on incredibly well. They're close in age, they all enjoy sports, they're bound by the situation they're in and they're all in it together. And I think that makes them all closer." Read the original article on People

The Ending of 'Echo Valley', Explained

Sometimes you need a movie that keeps you on the edge of your seat and your phone out of your hands. The new Apple TV+ thriller Echo Valley does just that. The movie stars Julianne Moore as Kate, a horseback riding instructor, who lives alone on her farm following the passing of her wife, Patty (Kristina Valada-Viars). That sounds quaint, right? Wrong. Enter: Sydney Sweeney as her daughter, Claire, who comes in and out of her life when she needs money for drugs... or to take advantage of her mother's love in an even darker way. As you can see, I'm not giving away anything just yet, because we're about to get deep into spoiler territory. So, if you're here, hopefully you've watched the movie already and are just looking for a little clarity on how Kate's plan to get out of a very tricky situation involving a vengeful drug dealer unfolded. Let's get into it. To quickly summarize what happens in the first two-thirds of the movie or so: Claire tells Kate that she accidentally killed her boyfriend, Ryan (Edmund Donovan), during an argument. Without Claire even asking her to, Kate disposes of the body in a lake because she just loves her daughter that much. You can tell by Claire's face that she's like, Ohhhh wow, didn't know that was going to be so easy. Claire soon disappears, but Kate finds her by tracking her phone. Turns out, she's hanging out in some random house with Ryan, who is definitely not dead! Claire and Ryan flee the scene, leaving Kate to be like, "Whose body did I throw in a lake then?!" The next thing you know, drug dealer Jackie (Domhnall Gleeson)—who has already been established as a horrible person—shows up at Kate's house and is all, "I know what you did, so now I'm gonna extort you." He also tells her that the dead body was that of a guy who Ryan caused to overdose. Meanwhile, Claire—now feeling regret—texts Kate that the dead person was named Greg. Kate needs a way to get out of all of this, obviously. Jackie wants money from Kate and doesn't care how he gets it. Since Kate doesn't have a lot of funds to her name, she comes up with a plan to burn down her barn for the insurance money, which she can then give to Jackie. In the meantime, he demands to stay in the apartment over her barn and poses as an employee on her farm when one of her horseback riding clients, Emma (Rebecca Creskoff), shows up. Kate and Jackie's plan is that she will burn down the barn with a flare in the middle of the night, which will look like an accident since she says flares are supposed to be undetectable fire-starters. Jackie makes sure Kate starts the fire, then drives off. Little does he know, Kate has purposely left a stand for the flare behind, because she previously heard a story about a man who tried to burn his house down for the insurance money, but was caught because he left a part of the flare behind. But, she doesn't want to be caught, she wants it to look like Jackie purposely burned down the barn. The next day, Kate is taken into the police station for questioning, and she brings up her "employee" Jackie and says she didn't know much about him and that the only person he ever brought around was some guy named Greg. The police chief reveals that a dead body was found in the apartment above the barn, and Kate is shocked at this information... or is she? In a flashback, we see that Kate and her friend, Les (Fiona Shaw), retrieved Greg's body from the lake and put it in the apartment when Jackie left. When the police eventually find Jackie and bring him in for questioning, he denies even knowing Kate at first, but then says he'll tell the true story—that Kate threw Greg's body in the lake to protect her daughter. Of course, the police don't believe him. There's also video footage of him buying the flares, a corroboration from Emma that he was a farmhand living in the apartment, and a bank statement showing that Kate transferred money to him. Kate and Jackie had set up this last part, because Kate needed to be able to slowly wire him the insurance money when it came through under the guise that she was paying him as an employee. Kate also purposely invited Emma to show up at the property while Jackie was there. So, Kate walks free, and Jackie is, presumably, going to be put trial for murder and arson and various other charges. Yes, the horses are fine! Jackie had suggested that Kate also "burn the horses" (his words) living on her ranch, because they are insured, too. And while it does appear that that happens at first, Kate and Les, thankfully, freed the horses once Jackie drove away. In a movie full of upsetting moments, it's really a relief when they show us those poor innocent horses making their escape. STREAM ECHO VALLEY HERE After Claire runs off with the very much alive Ryan, we don't see her again until the very end of Echo Valley. But, we do see text messages from her to Kate in which she expresses regret for the situation she put her mother in. It's hard to trust her, though, given that Kate also found texts between Claire and Ryan in which Ryan said that he couldn't believe Kate agreed to bury the body, and Claire responded, "I can make her do anything." Chilling. At the end, when Kate is working on rebuilding her barn and her life, she gets another text from her daughter, which reads, "Would you ever forgive me?" She doesn't respond, but soon, Claire shows up at Kate's door, tears in her eyes. She and Kate look at each other and the movie ends. Will Kate let Claire in yet again, potentially putting herself in another terrible situation and enabling her daughter's drug use? Or will she close the door this time, knowing all that she's already gone through? On the one hand, Claire's her daughter. On the other, Claire nearly got her imprisoned for disposing of a dead body, almost got her extorted or killed by a drug dealer, and once bit her and banged her head against a wall. Toss-up, really.
