New Delhi US-basedhedge fund Jane Street, which allegedly made handsome gains through market manipulation, has deposited the mandated Rs4,843.57 crore in an escrow account in favour of Sebi and requested it to lift certain watchdog is examining the request, Sebi said in a statement on Monday. Indian capital market lost Rs1.4 lakh crore market capitalisation(Mcap) since Jane Street's index manipulation came to light seven days ago. In an interim order on July 3, the regulator found Jane Street (JS) guilty of manipulating indices by taking bets in cash and futures & options markets simultaneously for making massive gains. Sebi barred the hedge fund from accessing the market and impounded over Rs4,843 crore in gains. The probe found that JS made a profit of Rs36,671 crore on a net basis during the probe period from January 2023-May 2025. In compliance with the interim order, a sum of Rs4,843.57 crore has been credited to an escrow account with a lien marked in favour of Sebi, the regulator said. 'Jane Street has further requested Sebi that, following the creation of this escrow account in compliance with Sebi directions, certain conditional restrictions imposed under the interim order be lifted and that Sebi issue appropriate directions in this regard,' the statement noted. 'This request is currently under examination by Sebi in accordance with the directions of the interim order,' it added. The regulator said it remains committed to following due process and ensuring the integrity of the securities market. Sebi called it a case of 'intra-day index manipulation,' flagging what it described as aggressive, unhedged positions in Nifty Bank options and other Sebi investigation is expected to take another 6-9 months before a final report and show cause notice will be issued to Jane Street. The markets regulator described it as 'non-neutral trading behaviour', a strategic attempt to influence prices rather than simply engage with the market. And the tactic wasn't random; it followed a well-known play in the trading world, which is termed marking the close. Jane Street is a proprietary trading firm, which means it trades with its own capital rather than managing client funds. The firm allegedly made a staggering Rs32,681 crore in profits by manipulating the Indian stock market and repatriating the amount overseas. Jane Street disputed the findings of Sebi's interim order. In its response, Jane Street said:'We reject the premise and the substance of the order in the strongest possible terms'.

At 2.1%, retail inflation falls to over 6-year low in June

Representative image NEW DELHI: Retail inflation slumped to a 77-month low in June, led by a sharp moderation in food inflation, prompting some experts to say that a rate cut in the Aug meeting of the Reserve Bank of India 's monetary policy committee may not be ruled out. Data released by the National Statistics Office (NSO) on Monday showed that retail inflation, as measured by the consumer price index ( CPI ), rose by an annual 2.1 per cent in June, slower than the 2.8 per cent recorded in May. There was a decline of 72 basis points in the inflation of June compared to May, marking the lowest year-on-year inflation since January 2019. "We are not ruling out the possibility of a final 25 basis points rate cut in the Aug 2025 meeting, carrying forward the front-loading seen in June 2025," said Aditi Nayar, chief economist at ratings agency Icra. She added that the agency expects CPI inflation to recede further and bottom out at 1.9 per cent in July 2025, despite an unfavourable base. Separate data released by the commerce and industry ministry showed wholesale price inflation entering the deflation territory at -0.1 per cent in June, led by a deflation in food and fuel. The negative rate of inflation in June is primarily due to a decrease in prices of food articles, mineral oils, manufacture of basic metals, crude petroleum, and natural gas, the ministry said. "Headline deflation was largely driven by deeper deflation in food and fuel WPI. Of the approximately 52 basis points fall in headline WPI year-on-year in June versus May, approximately 33 basis points (64 per cent) was on account of deeper food deflation, with another negative 5 basis points from fuel and power WPI," said a note from Barclays. Moitra questions detention of nine W.B. migrant labourers in Chhattisgarh

The recent detention of migrant labourers from West Bengal's Nadia district by Chhattisgarh police in Kondagaon district of Bastar region has caused a furore with Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra calling it 'State-sponsored terrorism and kidnapping by the Chhattisgarh government, police.' Countering these claims, the police said that the nine men were detained on July 12 under preventive provisions because they were staying in the district for a prolonged period without providing their documents that the law mandates, and were let off on Monday (July 14, 2025). On a video that she posted on X, Ms. Moitra said that Chhattisgarh Police had detained the nine men, all residents of her constituency (Krishnanagar, West Bengal), despite them having gone with a labour contractor with full documentation and verification, and neither their families nor the Government of West Bengal were informed. She further added that even after they were released according to the police, there was no mobile phone contact with them. The Hindu independently dialled two of the detained men Manirul Islam Mondal and Sayan S.K. on late Monday evening but their phones were found switched off. Claiming that the Kondagaon Superintendent of Police (SP) told her that he didn't want the workers there, the Trinamool MP asked why Indian citizens who were doing legal work needed to leave the State? On these allegations, Kondagaon SP Akshay Kumar told The Hindu that the workers were residing in Kondagaon for the past three months but had not informed the local police station despite repeated announcements by the local police. 'Day before yesterday, we found them during patrolling. When we asked for their names and IDs they did not produce and started misbehaving with us. So we prepared a memorandum and produced them before the local SDM (Deputy Collector) and he had proceeded them for preventive detention under Bharatiya Nyay section 128 (Security for good behaviour from suspected persons) for two to three days'. He said they had been let off and it was up to them if they wanted to stay in Kondagaon or go back to West Bengal.
