A special court Monday granted bail to a sub inspector with the Delhi police in an alleged bribery case.CBI had booked Rahul Malik , Sub-Inspector of Cyber Police, Rohini, for allegedly demanding Rs. 14 lakhs from Faikh Mohammed Rehan Hajatay for allegedly dropping his name from case probed by Malik.CBI after laying down a trap in Mumbai and recovering Rs. 2.5 lakhs from an alleged hawala operator from Rehan, had visited Cyber Police Station, Rohini, Delhi wherein its officials arrested Malik on who has been alleged to flee after seeing the officials. The CBI had recovered two mobile phones which the agency had alleged that Malik has thrown during the chase.Advocate Vijay Aggarwal along with Advocate Yash Agrawal appearing for Malik argued that as a chargesheet has been filed by CBI u/s 61(2)(a) and Section 238 of BNS, 2023 and Sections 7 of PC Act, 1988, subsequent to rejection of first bail application, therefore, considering the change in circumstances, the bail application ought to be considered afresh and his client should be enlarged on bail considering no useful purpose would be served as all relevant material has been brought on record.Aggarwal further argued that the alleged recovery of mobile phones from Rahul Malik where incriminating chats as per the case of CBI has been recovered showing him demanding bribe through another person namely Sherlock from Rehan is inadmissible as CBI has not complied with Section 105 of BNSS which lays down a new procedure for seizure whereby the entire search and seizure proceedings are to be recorded through audio- video means and failure of CBI to record the said proceedings makes the entire evidence inadmissible. The Special Court had earlier rejected the bail application of Rahul Malik prior to filing of chargesheet considering that investigation was at nascent stage and the likelihood of Rahul Malik tampering with evidence and influencing witness as the statements of Hawala Operator as well as one person namely, Kartik Jain through whom Rahul Malik had contacted Hawala Operator was yet to be recorded.Public Prosecutor for CBI opposed the said bail application arguing that Rahul Malik was a police officer and well versed with nitty-gritty of investigation and criminal case and is likely to influence witness and tamper with evidence. He further argued that Rahul Malik had used complex web of Hawala operators to collect bribe and therefore, considering the severity of allegations, he should not be granted bail.CBI Special Judge while imposing various conditions including that he shall surrender his passport with CBI and shall not enter the jurisdiction of Navi Mumbai granted Malik bail.

Govt employee in President's Estate held for duping colleague of ₹24.4 lakh

New Delhi, A government employee posted in the President's Estate has been arrested for siphoning ₹24.4 lakh from his colleague's bank accounts by exploiting the latter's lack of familiarity with mobile banking apps, an official said on Tuesday. The accused, Prakash Singh , was working in the same department as the 59-year-old victim, Surender Kumar, a chief household assistant in the household section of the President's Estate. "Prakash used his proximity to the victim, who worked in the same section, to frequently access his mobile phone under various pretexts. Taking advantage of the victim's unfamiliarity with digital apps, Singh installed a mobile payment application on his phone and quietly linked it to his bank accounts," Deputy Commissioner of Police Devesh Mahla said. Over three months, Singh allegedly transferred ₹1 lakh at a time every few days, accumulating a total of ₹24.40 lakh. To remain undetected, he would delete all transaction-related messages and uninstall the app before handing the phone back, the officer added. The other accused, identified as Sanjay Chakraborty, was apprehended from Kolkata for aiding the fraud by receiving and laundering the stolen funds. "The incident came to light when the victim discovered during a routine bank visit that ₹24.40 lakh had been withdrawn from his and his wife's bank accounts through unauthorised UPI transactions. Neither Kumar nor his wife had ever used mobile payment apps," the DCP added. The siphoned money was routed through multiple accounts, including that of Chakraborty, who received over ₹20 lakh and retained a small commission before passing on the rest to Singh. A case was registered under Section 318 of the BNS and an investigation was launched. Chakraborty was first apprehended in Kolkata and his interrogation led to the arrest of Singh in Delhi. "Prakash Singh used the cheated money to fund a lavish lifestyle. He purchased two smartphones, a motorcycle and a laptop, spent ₹2.25 lakh on mobile gaming and cleared personal debts. He also went on vacations and shopping sprees using the stolen funds," the officer added. He said about ₹2.25 lakh was recovered from Singh's bank account. Efforts are ongoing to trace the remaining siphoned amount and identify any additional co-conspirators involved in the laundering, he added.

China's rare-earth curbs hit Indian auto industry

(NOTE: This article was originally published in the India Today issue dated June 16, 2025)The US-China tariff war may have ostensibly eased into a softer phase of negotiations, but one stealth missile fired by China in its early days has only hit home now. The potential fallout is global, and India is very much within range. On April 4, two days after President Donald Trump's tariff blitz, Beijing had hit back by calling halt to its export of rare earth magnets. China controls over 90 per cent of the global processing capacity for this key component, used in everything from automobiles and fighter jets to robotics and home appliances. As it leverages this monopoly by slow-rolling licences, stockpiles everywhere are falling as rapidly as alarm is imported 870 tonnes of these magnets worth over Rs 300 crore in FY25, mostly from China, as domestic production capacity remains negligible. Now, though, Chinese exporters must themselves obtain government licences, furnishing detailed end-use certificates from Indian buyers, before shipping. The certificates need to be signed by India's foreign ministry and the Chinese embassy, apparently to ensure the end-use is not military. This knot has held up clearances and shipments. Industry sources say over 30 applications approved in India are already pending final clearance in China. AUTO SECTOR IN A BIND It has been a month since China put this squeeze on exports, and whatever inventory Indian auto companies had as a buffer is fast getting depleted and may dry up by June-end. Rare earth magnets, particularly neodymium-iron-boron ones, are essential in electric as well as conventional vehicles—they go into motors, steering, brakes, wipers and audio equipment. With no clarity on normalisation of imports, manufacturers are staring at a significant cut in groups are in some panic. A joint delegation comprising representatives from the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers and the Automotive Component Manufacturers Association is set to meet senior Chinese government officials to accelerate approvals and restore supply.'For some of these EV components, the whole supply chain resides in this doesn't change, the entire Indian EV industry will grind to a halt,' Rajiv Bajaj, chairman, Bajaj Auto, had warned in late April. On June 4, Rajan Wadhera, former president of Mahindra & Mahindra Auto and of industry body SIAM, wrote to Union heavy industries minister H.D. Kumaraswamy about the need to '...adopt a diversified, multi-pathway approach' since these magnets are 'indispensable to EVs', nearly 3 kg being needed per vehicle, against 100 grams in a conventional vehicle. 'The ban will begin to impact production by June-July,' says Sudarshan Venu, MD, TVS Motor. 'We're actively exploring ways to de-risk the situation, but there could be cost increases down the line.'A rare earth magnet, made from one of the 17 rare earth elements (lanthanide series, scandium, yttrium), is far superior to other industrial magnets. Rare earth metals aren't 'rare' as such, and are relatively abundant in the Earth's crust. However, they aren't found in pure concentrations, making it economically challenging to mine DOMINANCEChina produces 140,000 tonnes of rare earth metals annually, with the US a distant second, at 38,000 tonnes. In comparison, India's rare earths production capacity, mostly through state-owned IREL (formerly Indian Rare Earths Ltd), is just over 5,000 the new restrictions, several consignments are reportedly stranded at Chinese ports. Gaurav Vaangal, principal analyst with S&P Global in India, says the impact of China's clampdown can be mitigated by 'optimising the product mix to ensure production lines remain operational'. That said, continuous monitoring is essential, as the production line could experience significant disruptions—initially affecting EV components and later extending to ICE (internal combustion engine) parts, potentially leading to serious production challenges, he concedes. That challenge may hit the accelerator before solutions catch to India Today MagazineMust Watch
