University of Mpumalanga host Enactus preparation camp
The Enactus team is committed to using entrepreneurial action to empower and change lives.
They educate, inspire and support young people to use innovation and entrepreneurship to solve the world's biggest problems.
According to the UMP's spokesperson, Tlangelani Ubisi, they selected a group of students who are enterprise owners, Enactus executive members, and project contributors, to attend the camp which is committed to advancing social impact through entrepreneurial action.

The seven-day camp, hosted at UMP's Mbombela campus, was structured to foster focused collaboration, strategic refinement and presentation readiness.
'Participating students engaged in rigorous work sessions that encompass business modelling, project impact evaluation, presentation development, and team alignment activities,' Ubisi said.

The camp supported technical preparation, and encouraged innovation, leadership and a shared commitment to the values of Enactus.

The University of Mpumalanga (UMP) is celebrating a historical achievement. The UMP Enactus team has been crowned the overall winner of Enactus South Africa 2025 and the founding vice chancellor of UMP, Prof Thoko Mayekiso, was awarded the Enactus South Africa Champion Award for her extraordinary leadership. The event was held in Sandton, Johannesburg, on Thursday, July 17. Enactus is a global student organisation that empowers young people to use entrepreneurial action to create positive social and environmental impact in their communities. The UMP team won the competition ahead of some of the country's leading universities, with Wits obtaining position number two, followed by UCT at number three and NMU at position number four. The UMP Enactus co-ordinator and associate professor of economics, Prof Ferdinand Niyimbanira, said: 'We would like to thank the management of the university for their continued support over the years. To be recognised in such competitive championship is a true honour, and we are thrilled to have been crowned the overall winner of Enactus South Africa 2025. This is a testament to our hard work, dedication, and innovative spirit of our team. It validates our approach, values, and commitment to excellence.' The UMP Enactus team has won 48 trophies since participating in the national competition in 2017. Mayekiso was awarded the Enactus South Africa Champion Award for her extraordinary leadership, unwavering passion, and commitment to the Enactus movement. Since 2014, Mayekiso has led UMP with a clear vision rooted in transformation, innovation and social impact. 'This is a heart-warming moment, UMP Enactus continues to make us proud. Our Enactus team have set the bar very high, and they have demonstrated that our students are some of the best in our country. Their success serves as inspiration to all of us at UMP as we fully understand that when a member of the UMP community does well, the university at large benefits and the UMP brand gets enhanced,' said Ubisi.

UMP to lead advance in research leadership and education
The University Of Mpumalanga (UMP) aims to strengthen research leadership and higher education strategies by bringing together research leaders from different institutions to discuss the evolving landscape of higher education. The outgoing vice chancellor, Prof Thoko Mayekiso, highlighted the role of the university in national and international research collaboration, noting that UMP has partnered with 42 higher education institutions across Europe, North America, Australia, Asia and Africa. 'Our emphasis is on research impact, not just productivity. Our focus is on how research contributes to solving real world problems. We aim to develop and sustain the research capacity of staff and students while fostering research collaborations that contribute to national and global challenges,' she said. A theoretical physicist and former CEO of Universities South Africa, Prof Ahmed Bawa, discussed the strategic plan in higher education and the role of research leadership. He also noted in his presentation that China and India are dominating the global research landscape, surpassing the United Kingdom and the United States.
