Sam Bennett takes sixth in sprint finish at stage four of Giro d'Italia

DUTCH SPRINTER CASPER van Uden outsmarted the favourites to win stage four of the Giro d'Italia on Tuesday while Mads Pedersen held the overall race lead finishing fourth.
Olav Kooij of Visma was second and Maikel Zijlaard of Tudor was third for an all-Dutch podium after a nervy mass bunch sprint on a winding and relatively narrow home straight in downtown Lecce, in the heel of Italy.
Ireland's Sam Bennett was part of that bunch and finished the stage in sixth place in a dramatic conclusion.

The fourth stage rolled out of tourist town Alberobello, known for its atypical conical roofs, for a largely flat 189km run to Lecce with packed ranks of fans in towns and villages.
Lone escapee in Spanish rider Francisco Munoz of Polti Visit Malta broke from the flag and rode the first 130km of the route on his own.
The 23-year-old would later be caught as he spent the day in the spotlight.
A crash at a feed zone brought down Dane Pedersen in the pink jersey, Briton Tom Pidcock and French climber Romain Bardet amongst others as Canadian Nickolas Zukowsky became the third rider to pull out of this year's Giro.

One thing left Troy Parrott frustrated as striker helped AZ Alkmaar to comeback

Troy Parrott described AZ Alkmaar's five-goal hammering of Finnish side Ilves as 'a very good night' - but there was one thing that frustrated the Ireland striker. Parrott has resumed where he left off last season with his Dutch side by finding the net on a regular basis. Having scored 20 goals for Alkmaar last season, in his first term with the Eredivisie club, he already has three goals from just two appearances in the Europa Conference League so far this term. He netted in last week's 4-3 away-leg defeat to Ilves, and he kicked off the comeback on Thursday with the opening two goals, as AZ eased to a 5-0 win and an 8-4 aggregate victory. Parrott's goals came in the 22nd and 26th minutes, and he was substituted 12 minutes into the second-half, at a time when he confident he could wrap up a hat-trick. Asked if that was a source of frustration for him, the 23-year-old former Tottenham prospect replied: 'Yeah, a little bit. 'Look, I want to score as many goals as I can. I feel like the hat-trick was coming, so I was waiting a little bit for it to come. 'But it is what it is, two goals are also good, and we won, we played a great game, we scored a lot of goals.' Reflecting on the performance and result, which has earned AZ a third qualifying round clash with Liechtenstein side FC Vaduz, he said: 'A good night, a very good night. Look, five goals, into the next round, two goals for myself, it's really positive. 'I think defensively we were so, so much better as a team. Last week we gave away four goals, which was really unlike us, so we tightened up defensively and then we let the attacking quality show. 'We know as a team that last week wasn't good enough at all. But football is like this, it doesn't always go the way you want it to. But to bounce back from last week and put things right today, it's a big boost for us.' Cloud will slowly build from the southwest through the evening. Highest temperatures of 16 to 20 degrees with a moderate to fresh westerly wind, easing later. For more go to Meath v Dublin, Croke Park, 4.15pm Orlagh Nolan is named to start in the Dublin team. Nolan's 2024 season was cruelly cut short by an ACL injury sustained before the quarter-final clash with Galway but she returned against the same opposition in the recent semi-final – and performed well in a substitute's role as the Sky Blues won a dramatic game after extra-time. She comes in for Caoimhe O'Connor, who sustained a hamstring injury against Galway last time out. That's the only change in personnel from the semi-final, with Meath opting for an unchanged starting line-up. However, there may be a change in personnel for the Royal County, as key defender Katie Newe was forced off with a knee injury during the semi-final win against Kerry. Dublin won the most recent competitive clash between them, in the 2025 TG4 Leinster final. Meath's last victory against their old rivals was in a National League Division 1 group game – while the Royals last achieved a championship win against Dublin in 2022, in Leinster. The counties have not met in the All-Ireland series since the dramatic 2021 All-Ireland final. Dublin are readying themselves for the 14th Senior final in the county's history – and a win for the Sky Blues would hand them a seventh All-Ireland crown. They were previous winners in 2010, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020 and 2023.
