
Rafale, F-35, Sukhoi Outranged? China's 1,000-km BVR Missile Surpasses Even BrahMos
In a move that could shake up the global military balance, China has reportedly tested a new Beyond Visual Range (BVR) air-to-air missile with a range of 1,000 km, according to the South China Morning Post.
The development signals a major leap in military technology, potentially surpassing the capabilities of India's BrahMos missile, which gained global attention during Operation Sindoor for its devastating impact.
According to the report, China has successfully tested this missile capable of striking targets 1,000 km away at Mach 5 speed. The most striking feature of this missile system is its ability to strike the world's most advanced fighter jets, like the F-35, F-22 Raptor, and B-21 Raider, from a distance of 1,000 km, the report stated. Experts suggest that it can even take down fifth or even 5+ generation aircraft from well beyond visual range. This indicates how devastatingly effective it would be against 4th or 4.5 generation jets such as the Rafale and Sukhoi.
China plans to deploy this missile in potential conflict zones like the Taiwan Strait and South China Sea, marking it as one of the most advanced weapons globally.
India is developing the Astra MK-3 BVR missile system, aiming to extend its range to 350–400 km. If China's claims about its BVR missile are accurate, it could significantly alter the global power balance.
How Dangerous Is This Missile?
The missile's capability to target the world's most advanced defence systems, including fifth-generation fighter jets, and AWACS and AEW&C aircraft, before they can launch an attack, underscores its potential danger.
How Big Is The Threat To India?
India, Japan, Taiwan, and the US are particularly at risk from this Chinese missile system. It could severely impact the air defence strategies and combat air patrol ranges of these nations, presenting a new challenge for India to enhance its BVR missile capability.
India has developed the Astra MK-1 and MK-2 missiles based on this technology, but work on the hypersonic speed MK-3 continues, with DRDO and ISRO collaborating on this project. Initiated in 2000, progress on the Astra series has been slow. Currently, India only possesses the MK-1 BVR missile with a range of 80-110 km. Despite this, the Ministry of Defence approved the purchase of these missiles for the Air Force in 2022, installing them in some Sukhoi-30 MKI jets. The AK-2 series is nearing completion, with efforts made to address its shortcomings.
What Is BVR Technology?
BVR is a cutting-edge technology that enables attacks beyond visual range, hence the name Beyond Visual Range. Typically, an Air Force pilot has a range of about 37 km, within which they can target enemy aircraft. BVR technology, however, is equipped with advanced radar, sensors, and navigation systems that enable it to destroy long-range targets not visible to the pilot. India's Astra missile operates on this system, autonomously seeking and attacking targets beyond the pilot's control, embodying the fire-and-forget capability.

For the longest time, I drove a diesel SUV as my daily commuter. It wasn't ideal, but even when the fuel gauge dipped to the dreaded 'low fuel' warning, I never panicked. What's the worst that could happen? I could always call roadside assistance through my insurance, and they'd show up with fuel cans. Life with an electric car is very different. No one's going to rush in with a giant battery to bail you out, at least not yet. There is HopCharge, a startup that'll come to your location (in five cities) and charge your car. But when things go wrong with an electric vehicle (EV), they can go really wrong. In my 3,000-km experience, I've encountered vandalized chargers, roadside hawkers refusing to move from charging spots, cars wrongly parked at EV stations, so-called 'fast' chargers working at snail's pace, glitchy mobile apps, and non-existent customer support. If you're buying an EV, a home charger isn't just useful, it's essential. And if you're thinking of long road trips, even the most enthusiastic EV owner should think twice about relying solely on public chargers for a 400-km journey. This is the story of India's EV infrastructure, and the critical loopholes that need plugging before electric vehicles can truly go mainstream. On 27 July, Tata Consultancy Services, India's largest mass tech recruiter, announced that it would lay off about 2% of its global workforce. But as Mint's Jas Bardia and Varun Sood report, insiders have flagged several inconsistencies in how the process has played out. One big question: what exactly do these layoffs achieve? During a leadership meeting with CEO K Krithivasan, business heads were instructed to tell impacted employees that this isn't about profits, it's about 'restructuring' to enable future growth. Industry-Academia collaboration key to growth
Sri City: The Indian Institute of Information Technology (IIIT) Sri City celebrated a dual milestone on Saturday as it hosted its 9th batch convocation ceremony – conferring degrees on the Class of 2025 and marking a decade of academic excellence. Delivering the convocation address, Chief Guest Dr G Satheesh Reddy, former Chairman of DRDO and Honorary Advisor (Aerospace & Defence) to the Government of Andhra Pradesh, called on the institute to serve as a national anchor for technology development by bridging academic research and real-world innovation. 'I see IIIT Sri City as a unique institute embedded in a thriving industrial hub. You must lead with innovation, research, and entrepreneurship to help build a 'Viksit Bharat,' Dr Reddy said. Stressing the need for deeper R&D collaboration between academia and industry, he noted the growing establishment of advanced testing facilities supported by national agencies. However, he added that Indian industries must themselves step up to invest in design and development to remain globally competitive. Applauding IIIT's initiatives, he remarked, 'Institutes like IIIT must anchor technology development by bridging knowledge and application — a true engine of national growth.' The convocation was presided over by Dr Sridhar Vembu, Founder of Zoho Corporation and Chairman of the IIIT Sri City Board of Governors, who lauded the institute's steady growth and urged graduates to embrace a life of purpose and societal contribution. IIT Delhi convocation 2025 shows only 26% of 2,764 graduates are women
The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi conferred degrees on 2,764 students at its 56th convocation ceremony on Saturday. Amongst them were 530 PhD scholars and 43 international students representing around 20 countries. Women made up less than a third of the graduating batch, with 735 female students, about 26% receiving their youngest graduate this year was 20-year-old Chandan Godara, while 63-year-old Gopal Krishan Taneja stood as the oldest degree the convocation address, Chief Guest Dr. Tessy Thomas, former Director General (Aeronautical Systems) at DRDO and Vice-Chancellor of Noorul Islam Centre for Higher Education, hailed IIT Delhi as 'a cradle of innovation, knowledge, and nation-building.' She called upon the graduating class to embrace 'responsible innovation' in an era defined by disruptive technologies. Highlighting the transformative potential of areas such as artificial intelligence, sustainable energy, quantum technologies, satellite systems, and human-machine interfaces, Dr. Thomas underscored the need for innovation that is ethical and human-centric. 'The coming years will demand AI to be explainable, unbiased, and human-centric,' she further noted that India's transition from a technology importer to a global exporter is no longer just a goal but a reality. Pointing to the strides made by ISRO, DRDO, indigenous semiconductor development, AgriTech startups, and Bharat-made AI platforms, she credited institutions like IIT Delhi for driving this change. 'In a world increasingly driven by data, algorithms, and automation, human values will matter more than the valuations,' she reminded the ceremony also celebrated the institute's top achievers. Ankit Mondal received the President's Gold Medal, Jaskaran Singh Sodhi was awarded the Director's Gold Medal, and Devinder Kumar earned the Dr. Shankar Dayal Sharma Gold Medal. Two students achieved the rare distinction of graduating with a perfect 10 a touch of legacy to the event, a Distinguished Alumni Award Wall was unveiled, honouring notable IIT Delhi alumni from the fields of academia, public service, and entrepreneurship.
