Former chief of Malaysian defence force conferred Singapore's highest military award
Singapore President Tharman Shanmugaratnam presented the award during an investiture ceremony at the Defence Ministry (Mindef) on Thursday (July 31).
Mindef said under his leadership, the armed forces of Singapore and Malaysia continued to enhance long-standing defence ties through professional exchanges, cross-attendance of courses, and various flagship bilateral exercises such as Exercise Malapura, Exercise Semangat Bersatu and Exercise Sarex Malsing.
"These interactions have helped to forge closer rapport and trust between both armed forces,' Mindef said in a statement.
The ministry added that Mohammad's strong commitment to regional defence cooperation has also seen both armed forces work closely together on platforms such as the Malacca Straits Patrol, the Five Power Defence Arrangements, and the Asean Defence Ministers' Meeting (ADMM)/ADMM-Plus.
"He also consistently supported multilateral security initiatives, such as the Information Fusion Centre and the Counter Terrorism Information Facility, enhancing regional security and stability,' it said.
Guests at the investiture included Singapore Defence Minister Chan Chun Sing, Permanent Secretary (Defence) Chan Heng Kee, Chief of Defence Force Vice Admiral Aaron Beng, as well as other senior government officials and military officers from Singapore and Malaysia.
Mohammad, who will be here until Aug 3, called on Chan earlier Thursday at Mindef, during which both sides reaffirmed the long-standing bilateral defence ties and expressed commitment to deepen the bilateral defence relationship.
Mohammad served as the 22nd Chief of Defence Force from Sept 6, 2023, to Jan 31, 2025, before retiring after nearly four decades of distinguished service. - Bernama

Russia claims control of Sichneve village in Ukraine's Dnipropetrovsk region
MOSCOW: Russian forces pressing their slow advance through eastern Ukraine have captured the village of Sichneve in east-central Dnipropetrovsk region, the Russian Defence Ministry said on Tuesday. Russian forces have for months been pushing westward along sections of the 1,000-km (620-mile) front line, capturing new villages nearly on a daily basis, mainly in Donetsk region. Ukraine's military says its forces are holding their frontline positions and on Monday issued a pointed denial that its troops were surrounded in Pokrovsk, a logistics hub in Donetsk region under heavy attack for months. The General Staff of Ukraine's military said Ukrainian forces continued action to contain Russian forces that have been trying to move closer to Pokrovsk, once a city of 60,000 residents and site of Ukraine's only colliery producing coking coal. 'At the same time, some sources are disseminating information suggesting that our units are surrounded in Pokrovsk,' it said in an evening report. 'This is absolutely not true.' Russian attack kills three in Zaporizhzhia region, governor says
(Reuters) -A Russian attack killed three people in southeastern Zaporizhzhia region on Sunday, the regional governor said, as Moscow's forces press on with their slow advance westward along the 1,000-km (620-mile) front line with Ukraine. Governor Ivan Fedorov, writing on the Telegram messaging app, said the three people were killed in the daytime strike on the town of Stepnohirsk. Private homes were destroyed. Reuters could not independently confirm the report. In Kamianske, a town a few kilometers south of Stepnohirsk on the Dnipro River in Zaporizhzhia region, a military spokesman said on Saturday that Ukrainian troops were holding on to their positions despite Russian attempts to take control. Fedorov's account came amid reports in recent days of new Russian military action in Ukraine's east and southeast. Ukraine's top commander said Moscow's forces were changing their tactics, using smaller sabotage units in a bid to push forward with their drive through eastern Donetsk region. Rumours of attack on Cambodia untrue, says Thai army
BANGKOK: The Royal Thai Army (RTA) on Sunday denied rumours on social media claiming it had ordered the evacuation of residents in Surin province in preparation for an attack on Cambodia. RTA spokesman Major General Winthai Suvaree refuted the claims, which he said originated from a social media post allegedly shared by former Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen, citing a statement attributed to Cambodia's Defence Ministry spokesperson. Winthai said the post falsely alleged that the Thai army had ordered a nighttime evacuation of civilians and was preparing to launch an offensive against Cambodia. He confirmed there was no truth to the allegations and stated unequivocally that no evacuation orders had been issued in Surin or any other area. "The public is urged to rely on official information sources and not be misled by unverified posts or disinformation that could cause public panic," he said in a statement on Sunday. He said that while the Royal Thai Army remains fully committed to the current ceasefire agreement, Thailand continues to maintain operational readiness to respond to any unforeseen developments. Thai and Cambodian defence ministers are scheduled to hold the General Border Committee (GBC) meeting in Kuala Lumpur from Aug 4 to 7, following a ceasefire deal brokered by Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim on July 28. The two neighbouring countries have been in conflict over their 817km border, with disputes dating back to 1907. The latest conflict began with a brief skirmish between Thai and Cambodian troops on May 28, which escalated into armed clashes on July 24.
