Zahid: Govt will rebuild all homes lost in Bagan Pasir Laut blaze
Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said he had instructed various federal and state agencies to fast-track the reconstruction of the affected homes, despite several challenges.
The rural and regional development minister said a joint committee had been formed between his ministry and the Implementation Coordination Unit (ICU) of the Prime Minister's Department for this purpose.
"Both the federal and state governments will find ways to address the issues faced by the victims, and we will resolve them by rebuilding the homes.
"I have already discussed this with the ministry's secretary-general and the state ICU director, and they have set up a joint committee to expedite the process. I've requested that land leveling works be completed within a month.
"I've also requested that funding be allocated for the standard construction of these homes, based on the land size indicated in the land grants or Temporary Occupation License (TOL) approval letters," he said.
Zahid, who is Bagan Datuk member of parliament, was speaking to reporters after presenting welfare aid to the fire victims at the settlement today.
Each affected family received RM10,000 in aid, comprising RM3,000 from the ICU and the National Disaster Management Agency (Nadma), RM3,000 as Zahid's personal contribution, and RM4,000 from Tantrayana Buddhist Federation Chen Foh Chong Malaysia.
Zahid said the Bagan Pasir Laut village, located within the Bagan Datuk parliamentary constituency, was established about 140 years ago.
The land in the area is TOL land, and there are a total of 149 houses in the area.
"The available allocation is approximately RM86,000 for each house. But I believe that with the donations collected, families may want to add extensions or make improvements, and we will leave that up to each family.
"The ministry, Nadma, state government, Perak Land and Mines Office, Welfare Department, and other agencies have coordinated efforts to ensure that TOL ownership rights are handed over to the head of each affected family, house, and shop.
"As for the temple, an individual who is a friend of mine has promised to provide assistance for its reconstruction. I've already delivered part of that donation today," he said.
On Saturday, an early morning fire destroyed 21 houses, a restaurant, and a temple in Bagan Pasir Laut.
Firefighting efforts were hampered by low water pressure from fire hydrants and the risk of electrical arcing from still-active power cables.

Published on: Wednesday, July 30, 2025 Published on: Wed, Jul 30, 2025 Text Size: L/R: Dexter, Coral, Lau, Michael and Josephine. Kota Kinabalu: Sabah has marked a significant milestone with several of its business leaders appointed to top national-level positions in the Malaysia-China Chamber of Commerce (MCCC). The latest reshuffle at national level sees MCCC Sabah President Datuk Dexter Lau elected as Chairman of the MCCC National Business Sectors Committee, the first Sabahan to hold the influential post. Dexter, who also helms the Sabah China Chamber of Commerce, is now tasked with leading policy direction across sectors and building high-impact collaborations between Malaysian businesses and Chinese counterparts. 'This role is a responsibility, not just a recognition. It gives Sabah a wider voice nationally and allows us to bring more attention, resources, and investment to the East Malaysian region,' he said. He said the Sabah team's elevation reflects a growing appreciation of the state's strategic potential and its readiness to contribute to national economic direction. Alongside Dexter, business leader Coral Chia was appointed Vice Chairperson of the Business Sectors Committee. A long-time MCCC national council member, she is expected to work closely with Dexter in strengthening the committee's output. Her appointment also continues the legacy of her mother, Datuk See Meng Geok, who currently serves as MCCC Vice President and has long played an advisory role in national matters. Meanwhile, MCCC Sabah Founding President and Honorary Life Adviser Datuk Lau Kok Sing retains his position as National Affairs Advisor, continuing to offer strategic counsel on policy and institutional development. Also appointed to the national council is Datuk Michael Chin, another former MCCC Sabah President, who now serves as a National Vice President. His years of experience in bilateral business engagement are seen as key to further deepening enterprise-level links. Adding legal strength to the national team is Josephine Wan Wen Hadikusumo, appointed as National Internal Auditor. A senior Sabah-based legal practitioner, her role will focus on governance and compliance within the organisation. Dexter said the appointments mark a turning point for Sabah in terms of visibility and contribution on the national stage. 'We will continue to speak up for East Malaysia and ensure we are fully part of Malaysia's economic conversations,' he said. The MCCC is a key platform facilitating Malaysia-China trade, with branches across the country and deep linkages to industries, entrepreneurs, and policymakers in both nations. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Malaysia leads Asean push for regional peace, economic integration and digital transformation, says PM
KUALA LUMPUR, July 30 — Malaysia will ensure that Asean will be stronger and move in step or in tandem for global stability, prosperity and peace, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. He said Malaysia is committed to driving the implementation of the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP), accelerating the Asean Power Grid and finalising the Asean Digital Economy Framework Agreement to ensure an open, fair and sustainable economic future for the 660 million people in the region. 'Therefore, Asean will continue to speak out, ensure harmony and lead with determination, and not just follow the global order,' he said in a Facebook post yesterday. The Prime Minister said the world is currently beset by great power tensions, a gruelling geo-economic race and the collapse of multilateralism. Anwar said in this regard, Asean must not weaken, divide and lag behind but must unite to strengthen Asean's role and ensure that the region's voice continues to be respected. For example, he said Malaysia as the 2025 Asean Chairman has led efforts to reconcile Cambodia and Thailand, two neighbouring countries that were almost dragged into a more serious conflict. 'With the active involvement of China and the United States, we have succeeded in reaching an agreement on an immediate and unconditional ceasefire. 'This is proof that diplomacy must underpin our efforts to embody peace and firm leadership,' he said. Anwar, who is currently on a working visit to Indonesia, also announced that he was appearing for the first time at the Asean Secretariat Building based in Jakarta in conjunction with Malaysia's important role as Asean Chairman this year. 'It (Anwar's arrival at the Asean Secretariat Building) among other things underlines and highlights the symbol of our unwavering commitment to the strong and noble ideals and spirit of Asean,' he said. — Bernama
