Dundee United defender Emmanuel Adegboyega says he "couldn't sleep properly" after their VAR controversy in Wednesday's 3-1 defeat by Hibernian at Tannadice.United thought Sam Dalby had put them 2-1 up in the second half, but following a lengthy VAR intervention, the goal was chalked off as the striker was judged to have headed the ball onto his own arm before it flew in to the net."I still am (seething) because I don't think I could sleep properly after a decision like that," said the Irishman."I felt it was honestly a robbery in my opinion so there is a bit of frustration through the camp."I just don't agree with it (VAR) at all. What happened on Wednesday was the nail in the coffin for myself."As of right now, it might not be fit for purpose, I think it demonstrated on Wednesday that aspect of VAR in my opinion."I don't know if it needs to get changed or if it needs to get binned, I am kind of in the middle of both, but I think a change will have to come in first before a decision to bin it."The result meant United – who are now fifth – missed the chance to go above Sunday's opponents Aberdeen into third.Adegboyega was asked if they can channel their frustration from midweek for this weekend's visit to Pittodrie."I think we have to let it go because Sunday is a whole different game, whole different opposition," he answered."The frustration we felt on the Wednesday, we felt on the Thursday, and currently some of us are still feeling it today, but once Sunday hits it's a new ball game, new team, so we have to change focus and focus on Aberdeen.'"We have obviously been playing quite well so I think it's just to improve on some aspects in terms of our mistakes and also just to hopefully get the result in the end."

Mason Greenwood will be reunited with his fellow former Manchester United academy graduate team-mate Angel Gomes, who has secured a move to Ligue 1 giants Marseille Mason Greenwood will play alongside former Manchester United team-mate Angel Gomes next season at Marseille. They will reunite in France five years after Gomes left the Red Devils, having once been left humiliated by former United manager Jose Mourinho. Marseille confirmed this week that they have reached an agreement in principle to sign England international Gomes. The Ligue 1 runners-up, managed by Roberto De Zerbi, beat a host of clubs to his signature, with the 24-year-old reportedly signing a three-year deal at the Orange Velodrome. RMC Sport previously reported that the United academy graduate was convinced by De Zerbi's style of play and the opportunity to compete in the Champions League. Gomes had announced he would be leaving Lille once his contract expired this summer. The midfielder made the move to Lille at the end of his United contract in the summer of 2020, having been tipped for great things at Old Trafford after signing for the club back in 2006. The England U21s European Championship winner was handed his debut aged just 16 by Mourinho on the final day of the 2016/17 season, making him United's youngest ever Premier League player. But despite the trust placed in him by the current Fenerbahce boss, a 17-year-old Gomes was once brought to the brink of tears as a result of Mourinho criticising his performance in a reserve team match in front of the first team. He told the Athletic:"I played a game for the reserves and he watched — he didn't think I played good enough. Two days later, the first team had a game, and he took me with the team. At the pre-match, in front of everybody, he let me know about it." Expanding on the story in an interview with The Times, Gomes explained: "At the time I was thinking, 'Why has he done that in front of everyone? Could he not have pulled me to the side?' "A few of the players came up to me and said, 'He just wants a reaction from you, don't let it faze you', but in that moment, I didn't want to hear anything. 'I rushed to my room and rang my dad and my brother. There's not much they could say to me really. I was almost crying. I was really young. "It wasn't until I was older that I realised, with Mourinho, he's always looking at ways to get more out of you. I think him doing that in front of everyone showed he valued me as a player. I probably needed it." He added: "It's all mental toughness. What I came to learn about Jose is he always wants you to do better. He is almost like prodding you, 'Come on, show me a bit more. Everyone's told me how good you are, but I want to see it.'" Despite the psychological blow at the time, Gomes wishes he had been mature enough to embrace Mourinho's management style, saying: "It wasn't until I left and I see Jose winning trophies that I think, 'Ah, I understand you. And if only I had understood you more, I would have been able to appreciate my time more with you'. But no, in the midst of little b*********s, [he was] an amazing guy." Gomes' departure came during Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's tenure, following Mourinho's sacking two years prior in 2018. His game time was extremely limited under Solskjaer while the then-promising Greenwood was enjoying his first-team breakthrough in the 2019/20 season. After playing a total of 320 minutes for United, Gomes left as a free agent, capping off the "most difficult period" of his career. Despite spending the first year of his five-year Lille stint at Portuguese club Boavista, the move to Ligue 1 served to kickstart his career. He made 134 appearances in all competitions for Lille, including 20 this season as they finished fifth in the league. He also impressed in a Three Lions shirt last year after receiving his first four caps under interim boss Lee Carsley. However, Gomes has not yet featured under new manager Thomas Tuchel.

Manchester United will sanction a permanent exit for Jadon Sancho this summer after Chelsea failed to sign the winger for £25m and a return to Borussia Dortmund has now been mooted Sebastian Kehl, the Borussia Dortmund sporting director, has played down talk of a third move for Jadon Sancho after the Manchester United forward was linked with a shock return to the Bundesliga club. Sancho, 25, is out of favour at Old Trafford and spent the 2024-25 season on loan at Chelsea. He is at a career crossroads, though, with the Blues set to pay a £5million penalty fee rather than completing a £25m permanent transfer for the star. Despite originally being frozen out by Erik ten Hag, its understood Sancho has no future at United under the Dutchman's successor, Ruben Amorim. And with United desperate to offload several players who have been deemed surplus to requirements in order to raise transfer funds, talk of a return to Dortmund has materialised ahead of the 2025-26 campaign. The Athletic revealed Sancho's representatives had been informed of Dortmund's interest - but Kehl has said a deal for the forward is currently 'not a priority'. 'Of course, contact with Jadon is always there, in some way, because we have a very long history,' Kehl ahead of the FIFA Club World Cup on Thursday. 'But it's not an issue for us right now. We have other priorities at the moment and that's why the Sancho issue was probably played up more in the media than discussed internally.' Sancho established himself as one of Europe's brightest stars at Dortmund across a four-year spell before joining United in a £73m deal in the summer of 2021. And with his career at a standstill it was Dortmund who gave him a platform to play again during the second half of the 2023-24 campaign, where he helped his old club reach the final of the Champions League. Dortmund's reported interest in Sancho comes amid claims that a trio of Premier League clubs are interested in offering the winger a chance to kickstart his career. Aston Villa, Tottenham and Newcastle are all said to be keeping an eye on Sancho's situation with a permanent exit from Old Trafford likely in the coming weeks. Villa took Sancho's United team-mate, Marcus Rashford, on loan for the second half of last season but a permanent deal does not appear to be on the cards, hence their interest in Sancho.

6 top Dundee United transfer window priorities as major Tannadice rebuild begins
The starter's pistol has been fired. Dundee United's summer business has started in earnest. A waspish goal-getter from Down Under, Zac Sapsford. A mountainous young centre-back who is fond of a crunching tackle, Iurie Iovu. Two down, plenty to go. United hope to have another three or four captures in the door by the time pre-season begins. More by the time the competitive action begins on July 24. But while there is an urgency about the Tangerines' business – and plenty of plates being spun – there is also an internal appreciation that a lengthy window lies ahead. After all, the man who fired them to Europe last season, Sam Dalby, didn't arrive until the last knockings of the summer transfer window. Here, Courier Sport profiles the top priorities in the coming weeks – focusing on the most pressing issues (rather than areas where depth and competition are required, such as full-back). Dave Richards, solid in the final two games of the Premiership season, has made no secret of his desire to cling on to the No.1 berth. Already a hugely influential, popular figure in the dressing room, that is a laudable aim. And who is to say he won't grab the gloves for keeps? However, it would be churlish to ignore the fact that the genial Welshman has played just over 100 first-team games in his entire career and spent most of last term as understudy to Jack Walton. Courier Sport understands Scotland U/21 international Ruairidh Adams is set to sign an extended deal with United but he is one for the future. Jim Goodwin will want another goalkeeper to challenge for jersey and ensure competition and standards remain sky-high, just as they were last season. Pedigree and reliability will be key. And it is pivotal the Tangerines get it right. The lessons of errant recruitment between the sticks remains writ large in the memories of 2022/23. Iovu is in the door. But the Terrors need another. A stopper. Declan Gallagher, Kevin Holt and Emmanuel Adegboyega have all left the club in the last six months. Iovu – capped four times for Moldova at the age of 22 – appears to be a player of some promise but he does little to fill the void of experience left by those departures. Iovu, Sam Cleall-Harding and Ross Graham represent a relatively youthful pool of centre-backs – albeit the latter is now 24 years of age and boasts a maturity beyond even that. At least one streetwise, quality defender would be a welcome addition. Former St Johnstone loan ace Zach Mitchell is not currently an active target. The departure of Ross Docherty raised a few eyebrows, while seeing the likes of Allan Campbell, David Babunski and Lewis Fiorini exit was more predictable. Luca Stephenson has also gone – for now. Richard Odada? Who knows what the future holds for him after a miserable first season at Tannadice. He has another year to run on his deal. As such, there is a fair bit of rebuilding to be done to a sparsely populated engine room which only contains Vicko Sevelj and Craig Sibbald as experienced, proven options. Although technical attributes are valued (Goodwin wants players who can use the ball when in possession), United are keen to bring mobility and physicality to the centre of the park. This is perhaps the area where there is the biggest room for improvement compared to the recruitment of last season. Campbell, Odada, Fiorini and Babunski were all disappointing to some degree, although the latter did contribute to United's success. The Terrors are understood to be close to securing reinforcements in this area. Courier Sport understands that United have been in talks with Liverpool as recently as this week regarding the future of Stephenson. The player would be open to returning; the Reds were delighted with his progress in Scotland. However, with just a year left on his deal with Anfield, there is lingering uncertainty regarding whether he will pen a new deal and be made available for loan again – or told to seek a permanent move. The ball is in the court of the English champions. And from their perspective, there is no rush. English clubs return to training well after Scottish teams, while the player is currently on holiday in Greece. Contrary to some suggestions online, no announcement is imminent regarding his signing. But he is very much a live target. A little patience may be required. Glenn Middleton has departed, Meshack Ubochioma looks to be out of the picture and Kai Fotheringham was rarely utilised last term. That leaves Kristijan Trapanovski, who is an undoubted talent but needs to combine his natural talent with more consistency and robustness. Finnish flyer Juho Talvitie will not be arriving the Tangerines despite some reports crediting United with an interest in the Lommel winger; he is joining NAC Breda in the Eredivisie. The Tannadice outfit made a tentative enquiry earlier this summer, but it went no further than that. However, a wide man could be secured by next week as United continue to whittle down their shortlist to the top, viable targets. Ultimately, two wingers could be required, albeit new signing Sapsworth operated as a wide player in a front-three on numerous occasions for Western Sydney Wanderers. While keen to bring pace and width to the side, it is understood that Goodwin also wants players who can cut inside, get shots away and attack the penalty box. Sapsworth boasts a decent scoring record in Australia and arrives at Tannadice on the back of his most prolific A-League campaign – nine goals and four assists in 26 outings. However, he has not always been deployed as an orthodox striker and doesn't fit the profile of a successor to 15-goal Dalby, who joined Bolton Wanderers on a four-year deal earlier this week. He is more akin to Ruari Paton, if considering like-for-like replacements compared to last season's squad. Owen Stirton will be given every opportunity to cement his place in the United first-team group in pre-season, while Jort van der Sande remains on the books. However, a 'traditional', experienced No.9 – who can combine physicality with an eye for goal – is a notable void in Goodwin's squad. And it is the hardest assignment of the lot. There's nary a club in Scotland not looking for the same thing.
