What do the stats say about United's impressive season?
Dundee United's impressive fourth-placed finish on their return to the Scottish Premiership has garnered plenty of what do the stats say about how Jim Goodwin's men fared?United were solid rather than spectacular, an effectiveness amplified by their results. Only twice did they win a league game and score more than two goals in the process. Eight of their 15 league wins were by a 1-0 loanee Sam Dalby bagging 15 goals on his own certainly racked up an xG (expected goals) of 48.53 - below the league average of 52.79 - so their 45 goals in the league is a slight underperformance and they outscored only the bottom two Ross County and St errors led to goals being conceded, too, the league's third-highest number. A sturdy defensive unit was key to their success, Goodwin's side were content to cede possession - their average of 42.93% ranks them eighth in the Premiership - their clean sheet tally of 12 is bettered only by Celtic and Rangers, and goalkeeper Jack Walton impressed again on loan from Luton overperformed compared to their xG against of 56.31 - pretty much bang on the league average - by conceding 54 goals, further suggesting a stout defence. And only four sides let in fewer goals than the Tannadice the post-split fixtures, United never went longer than four games without a top-flight matchday seven in early October, they beat St Mirren 1-0 away and climbed to fifth. Remarkably, they would never be lower than that for the rest of the season.

Sam Dalby sends message to Dundee United fans amid transfer race
Sam Dalby has reflected on an 'unforgettable' campaign with Dundee United as the battle for his signature heats up. Dalby, 25, enjoyed a sensational campaign with the Tangerines, notching 15 goals on loan from Wrexham. He was named in the PFA Scotland team of the year, while being awarded players' player of the year at the club's annual ceremony. Having turned down a contract extension with the Welsh side, Dalby will now take his services onto the open market. Wigan Athletic and Blackpool have been credited with an interest, while United will table a deal. However, as Courier Sport has previously reported, the Terrors' financial muscle will pale compared to some of his suitors south of the border. Jim Goodwin's pitch relies on the draw of European football and a regular starting berth. And, in what some fans have taken as a final farewell, Dalby issued a heartfelt message. Taking to Instagram, Dalby wrote: 'I would like to thank everyone involved at @dundeeunitedfc from the fans to the players and staff for an unforgettable season. 'From the moment I got here I felt a part of the family and for that I'll forever be grateful. 'The club deserves European football and I can't say how happy I am to be a part of the team that helped achieve that. Thank you for an amazing season.' Ryan Strain, Vicko Sevelj, Emmanuel Adegboyega, Ross Graham and Glenn Middleton were among his erstwhile teammates to respond to the post, with the latter hailing Dalby as a 'hero'.

Wrexham limited to 25-man squad in the Championship
The Reds finished runners-up in League One this season, securing an historic third successive promotion and place in the second tier for the first time in 43 years. Clubs in the Championship are limited to a 25-man squad and that includes goalkeepers or players who were aged 21 or over at the start of the calendar year. After announcing his retained list on Friday, with Steven Fletcher, Mark Howard and Jordan Davies not offered new deals, Parkinson is left with 27 first-team players on the books who are under contract and would fill a place in the squad. But with Wrexham going up a division where they will come up against the likes of Leicester City, Southampton and Ipswich Town, Parkinson is also looking to make new signings. To make room for fresh faces, players will be allowed to leave and the Reds' boss says some members of his squad who found opportunities limited this season will be keen to move on to pastures new anyway. "It goes without saying that as the summer and pre-season progresses, there are players who will want a move themselves," said Parkinson. "A little bit similar to Sam Dalby and Jordan Davies' situation last year. MORE WREXHAM AFC NEWS: "As much as the lads love being at Wrexham, there are players who haven't not figured as much this season who will be thinking 'for my own career, I need to get playing again'. "Sam is a great example of that, he did really well on loan at Dundee United. "Obviously players are going to be leaving because we need to make space to bring in additions to make us competitive." Here are the 27 first-team players aged over 21: Ryan Barnett; Luke Bolton; Will Boyle; Lewis Brunt; Callum Burton; Andy Cannon; Max Cleworth; Sam Dalby; George Dobson; George Evans; Mo Faal; Elliot Lee; Ryan Longman; Jack Marriott; Matty James; James McClean; Luke McNicholas; Jacob Mendy; Paul Mullin; Eoghan O'Connell; Tom O'Connor; Arthur Okonkwo; Ollie Palmer; Oliver Rathbone; Sebastian Revan; Jay Rodriguez; Dan Scarr; Sam Smith.
