'Conversations all the time' - Schumacher issues update on striker search

Yahooa day ago
Steven Schumacher says Wanderers are working hard to bolster their strike department – but insists they must get the 'right player" in.
Bolton are looking to add a different profile to the frontline following the arrivals of Sam Dalby and Mason Burstow.
Schumacher says they cannot rush the decision, especially with Dalby set to return from injury in a couple of weeks.
He is also looking to recruit another wide player following the additions of Amario Cozier-Dubery and Thierry Gale.
'The lads are working hard, we are having conversations all the time,' Schumacher told The Bolton News.
'We have got to get the right person in, we've got to get the right player. I keep saying it all the time, it's a different profile because I don't want the same strikers.
'Sam Dalby isn't too far away so that gives us time to go, 'We don't need to rush because he's going to be here in a couple of weeks'. Mason will get better with the games that he plays so we have to get it right and not rush it.'
David Abimbola and Daeshon Lawrence filled in during pre-season but Schumacher opted to put Burstow straight into the starting line-up at Stockport County.
The head coach saw some positive early signs from the Hull City loanee as he builds up his sharpness.
'I think he did OK, he will get better with the more games that he plays. That was his first 60 minutes,' he assessed.
'In all of the pre-season, he has only played 30 or 45 minutes for Hull so he will get stronger. But I think he's shown enough to say that he's good in possession, he competes and he's physical.'
Max Conway was also handed an opportunity in the starting line-up at Edgeley Park and didn't look out of place.
The left-back had been around the first team in pre-season following a successful loan spell at Crewe Alexandra in League Two last term.
Richard Taylor is also nearing a return from injury, and Schumacher explained why he decided against bringing in a further left-back option.
'I didn't want to just bring somebody in and play him in ahead of Max,' the boss explained. 'Max has done well in pre-season and how are we going to know if he is good enough if he doesn't play?
'In all the pre-season games, in the game today, he has defended better. What I asked him from day one of pre-season, I showed him clips of his stuff from Crewe last year where he wasn't close enough to a wide player.
'We asked him to be more aggressive because he can run. I want to give him an opportunity to play because he's one of our own and we should.
'Richard Taylor won't be far behind. We think he'd be best suited as a left-back for us. He can also play centre-back.
'I don't want to waste money in a left-back area when I need a striker and a wide player.'

Son draws fans to airport as LAFC calls Wednesday news conference

South Korean star Son Heung-min has not even been officially announced as joining Los Angeles FC of MLS, but excited fans are already waiting to welcome him. ESPN and The Athletic report that Son, who left Tottenham Hotspur last weekend, will sign with LAFC for an MLS-record transfer fee of $26 million. LAFC on Tuesday night announced a news conference for a "major announcement" on Wednesday at 2 pm local time (2100 GMT) that would seem to be the unveiling of Son. After press reports about Son's possible arrival on Tuesday at Los Angeles International Airport, about 40 fans of Son went to see if they could get an autograph or photograph or even a glimpse of their idol. They were unable to see Son, however, after his sendoff in South Korea a few hours earlier. "Son is immensely important to me. I used to wake up at five or six in the morning to watch him play in England," Jun Kwon, a 19-year-old fan, told AFP. "He's going to change things here. My father and I, who had no interest in MLS, are already won over." He was wearing a gold and black LAFC jersey purchased Tuesday morning and printed with his idol's name. In a decade with Spurs, Son scored 173 goals in 454 matches. The winger confirmed his plans to leave Tottenham in Seoul last weekend after a final match with the Premier League club. At LAFC, Son will replace French striker Olivier Giroud, who was sold to Lille in July, and will share a dressing room with French goalkeeper Hugo Lloris, his former teammate at Tottenham. bi-rg/gbv/js/jgc

The big deals so far

Follow live updates from the summer transfer window with big-money strikers dominating the Premier League agenda Getty Images We have already seen some impressive business this window, as teams look to find the missing piece of the jigsaw and ensure the 2025-26 season is a success. The picks of the bunch for me so far include… Florian Wirtz: Bayer Leverkusen > Liverpool Bayer Leverkusen > Liverpool Viktor Gyokeres: Sporting CP > Arsenal Sporting CP > Arsenal Hugo Ekiteke: Eintracht Frankfurt > Liverpool Eintracht Frankfurt > Liverpool Bryan Mbeumo: Brentford > Manchester Utd There will be plenty more where these came from too, so stay tuned for all the latest breaking news and transfer updates on our transfer window live coverage right here. GO FURTHER Why the Premier League's traditional 'Big Six' are buying more from the rest of the league Getty Images The Premier League has strict rules about the number and type of players its teams can submit as part of their official squad list for the upcoming season. Once the deadline closes on September 1, clubs will submit a 25-player squad. From that number, a minimum of eight players must meet the league's home grown player criteria. A player qualifies as home grown if they have been registered with an English or Welsh club for three full seasons before their 21st birthday. Under-21 players at any Premier League club do not need to be included in the 25-man squad list, and can play at any time in the season for their team. You will hear from our writers, correspondents and transfer experts regularly throughout today and the coming weeks; I can guarantee you that. AND we very much want to hear from you too. You can enjoy the latest edition of the DealSheet, which is hot off the press, below right now... GO FURTHER The Transfer DealSheet: Latest on Man Utd, Arsenal, Liverpool, Real Madrid and more This summer, English clubs had the luxury of getting new players in even earlier than the start of the primary transfer window — and it was all thanks to FIFA's revised and enlarged Club World Cup. The winners were Chelsea, and they are a good example too. They signed Joao Pedro from Brighton midway through the tournament in the USA, and had him join up with the squad for the latter stages of the competition. All Premier League and EFL clubs were given special dispensation by FIFA to do business in an exceptional registration period from June 1 to June 10, regardless of whether the team in question took part in the Club World Cup. This is the main summer transfer window, after the invention of a bonus mini-window was granted for the Club World Cup in June. We will ignore that for now. For all Premier League and EFL clubs, the primary period for player trading opened on June 16 — and they have until deadline day on September 1 to conclude any trading. That deadline this year is not going to be a late affair either. Rather than the previous 11pm deadline, this window will close at a universally agreed and very civilised time of 7pm BST. As long as deal sheets are submitted to the FA before that time, clubs and staff have a grace period of two hours to conclude paperwork on any late deals. Getty Images A very good day to you all on Tuesday, August 5 and welcome along to our live coverage of football's summer transfer window. A lot of time has passed already, especially with FIFA's Club World Cup muddying the waters of what we're all used to through the European close season. But here we are, flying headlong into the final month of the window alongside the start of soccer's biggest domestic leagues — with a lot of business to be done between now and the September deadline. We will bring you all the breaking news, context, analysis and reaction you need to keep on top of the moves, purchases and sales — as well as the chance to catch up on anything you've missed so far. In short, don't go anywhere because we've got you covered from here.

Tennessee Titans welcome back safety Quandre Diggs

In April, free agent safety Quandre Diggs spoke with Jim Wyatt about his cousin Cam Ward and how "incredible" it would be for the two to be able to play together in Nashville. At the time, Diggs was still rehabbing a Lisfranc fracture that ended his 2024 season, and he had no idea what the future would hold. On Tuesday, the Tennessee Titans welcomed Diggs back into the fold and will give the 10-year veteran a chance to make the dream of playing with Ward a reality. The coaching staff is familiar with Diggs, who started eight games for the Titans in 2024 after joining the team in August. He was playing at a high level when the injury hit, and finished the season with 42 tackles. Over his career, the former sixth-round pick of the Detroit Lions has recorded 622 tackles and 24 interceptions with the Lions, Seattle Seahawks, and the Titans. Not only will Diggs have to prove that he is healthy and fully recovered from the injury, but he will also be joining a crowded safety room in Nashville. The Titans signed Xavier Woods as a free agent and added Kevin Winston Jr. in the third round of the draft to fortify the back end of their defense. The move also comes on the heels of the Titans adding safety Joshuah Bledsoe earlier in the day, sparking speculation on social media about the status of the unit, specifically Winston, heading into the first preseason game. Winston is coming off a torn ACL, and left practice early on Sunday with soreness in his knee, although that was precautionary and part of a plan head coach Brian Callahan and the trainers put in place. To make room for Diggs and Bledsoe, the Titans released outside linebacker Titus Leo and safety Mark Perry.
