Rangers overcome defensive woes to beat League One Alloa in Premier Sports Cup
Gers debutant Emmanuel Fernandez restored the home side's lead three minutes later with a header and in the 67th minute substitute James Tavernier added a third with a penalty
Scott Taggart reduced the deficit with 10 minutes remaining only for Gers substitute Findlay Curtis to restore the two-goal advantage in the last minute.
It was a good workout for those players who needed minutes on the park but now boss Russell Martin, still trying to grasp the high demands of being the Rangers boss since arriving in the summer, will have noted the poor goals conceded as he starts preparing to host Belgian side Club Brugge in the first leg of the Champions League play-off on Tuesday.
Despite reaching the play-off with a 4-2 aggregate win over Viktoria Plzen, the 2-1 defeat in the second leg in the Czech Republic during the week brought another fresh wave of criticism for the former Southampton boss.
As expected, he rang the changes with only defender Nasser Djiga retained from the trip to the Czech Republic.
There was a debut for Mikey Moore, the 18-year-old attacker who received his international clearance on his loan move from Tottenham, and Fernandez, signed from Peterborough this summer.
The home side, captained by Liam Kelly, took instant control.
Moore had a couple of efforts beaten away by Alloa goalkeeper Liam McFarlane before he laid the ball off to Bajrami, who took a touch and curled the ball in off the crossbar from the edge of the box.
The home side's lead was cancelled out in bizarre circumstances, which began when Djiga lost possession.
Steven Buchanan skipped by left-back Bailey Rice, his angled-drive was blocked by Kelly straight to Luke Rankin whose shot was stopped by Rothwell – perhaps by his arm.
However, when the ball got through to Kelly again, he thrashed it off the head of the prostrate Rothwell and the ball landed in the net, irking the home fans.
Rothwell's next contribution was more positive, however, slinging in a free-kick from the right for Fernandez to head in from eight yards.
McFarlane made good saves from Gers attacker Danilo, Djiga and Bajrami before club captain Tavernier came on to replace the injured Rice.
The second half continued along the same lines with Rangers attacking and Alloa defending and McFarlane made further saves from Danilo and Tavernier.
There was a VAR check when Alloa substitute Cameron O'Donnell stopped Oscar Cortes getting on to the loose ball when McFarlane parried another Bajrami drive.
Referee Daniel McFarlane checked his pitchside monitor and pointed to the spot, with Tavernier driving in off a post.
Thelo Aasgaard, the 23-year-old Norway midfielder signed from Luton, replaced Moore to make his Rangers debut, with Hamza Igamane and Connor also coming on for Rothwell and Danilo.
Alloa injected some tension into the game when Taggart tapped in from a yard after David Devine headed an O'Donnell free-kick off the crossbar.
But Findlay, on for Cortes, fired a low shot in off the far post to seal the win, but the Light Blues will be stress-tested to a greater degree by Club Brugge on Tuesday.

Who will win Celtic vs Kairat Almaty? Our writers deliver predictions for Champions League playoff first leg
Celtic have overcome Kazakhstan opposition on three previous occasions in Champions League qualifying To call it the dream draw would be ignoring the nightmares which have lurked for Celtic over the years during some treacherous nights in qualifying, However, there's no doubt a tie against Kazakhstan's Kairat Almaty is one in which the Premiership champions' are expected to navigate with the minimum of fuss. Brendan Rodgers is rightly railing against overconfidence but does believe he has the Celtic side capable of being too much for Almaty despite his wishes for extra players at his disposal. Celtic have overcome Kazakhstan opposition on three previous occasions in Champions League qualifying and are aiming to do so again. Record Sport' s top team makes their predictions with one score standing out. Michael Gannon Kairat will come and try to park the bus but an early goal will set the tone and Celtic should be able to head to Kazakhstan with a fairly comfortable lead. Keeping the visitors out at the other end will be key. Celtic 4 Kairat 0 Ryan McDonald Celtic fans won't accept any excuses if they somehow crash out of the Champions League. This is arguably the most favourable draw and the Hoops should have enough in the locker to take a comfortable aggregate lead over to Kazakhstan. Celtic 3 Kairat 0 Scott Burns I would expect Celtic to get the job done at home. I think Brendan Rodgers' side will be too strong and they won't want to take any chances ahead of the second leg in Kazakhstan. Celtic 3 Kairat 1 Mark Pirie The Hoops proved last season that they are more than capable of getting big results in Europe. Celtic look weaker than last season after a sluggish summer transfer window, but should still have enough to navigate this tie and take a comfortable first leg advantage to Kazakhstan. Celtic 2 Kairat 0 Andy Newport The Hoops have a hell if a long way to go for the second leg next week. So you can be sure they will want to make sure they have a decent lead packed in their suitcase before setting off. They've got to cross five time zones to reach Kazakhstan but I can't see them wasting much time putting the tie to bed. Celtic 3 Kairat 0 Scott McDermott Given the difficulties of a midweek trip to Kazakhstan for the second-leg, there will be a real determination from Brendan Rodgers' side to effectively kill off the tie in Glasgow. Celtic are adept at making fast starts at home in Europe and if they get it right here they can blow Kairat away early - and make their away trek a lot easier than it might otherwise be.

Rodgers says Celtic can take care of Kairat but admits they must strengthen for tougher challenges to come
Brendan Rodgers is confident Celtic will have enough to kill off Kairat Almaty but has warned that they'll need to seriously strengthen for another tilt at qualifying for the Champions League knockout stage. The Parkhead club face the men from Kazakhstan in the first leg of their play-off tomorrow evening hoping to qualify for the main competition for a record fourth successive year. A summer of slow transfer activity to date means Kieran Tierney and Benjamin Nygren are likely to be the only new signings who'll start the game. And while the manager believes the players he currently has at his disposal are good enough to get the first job done, he feels significant additions would then have to be made. Asked if the squad was currently good enough to win the tie, Rodgers replied: 'Yes. I've had no injuries and I believe that the quality of our game and the intensity that we want to work at can hopefully be enough to see us through. But like I said, these games will always be tough games.' Then, pressed on whether he believed the current group would be good enough to make an impact in the league phase, he added: 'Well, I think firstly, we want to qualify, of course. And if it's with this group of players, I'm confident that we can do that. Going forward, listen, it's clear we would have to improve the squad.' Eight years ago, under Rodgers, Celtic beat Kazakhstani side Astana 5-0 in Glasgow before a fraught night away from home saw them lose 4-3 to progress 8-4 on aggregate. With an even longer trip awaiting on Sunday, the manager will urge his players to do all they can to give themselves another healthy cushion. 'We set off in every game to go and attack the game and play our football in it. And this will be no different,' he said. 'Two of the three experiences I've had in qualification, having gone through qualification phases, has been based around a really, really good first leg. 'In both of those, we scored five goals. So, for us, it's really that attack and intent in the game and being really, really difficult to play against. And then, hopefully, we can then take an advantage then into the second leg.' Rodgers took a straight bat to reports linking him with a move for veteran striker Jamie Vardy. The 38-year-old is a free agent after leaving Leicester following a 13-season spell which coincided with the Northern Irishman's time at the club. Asked about the former England man, who's also been linked with Napoli, the manager said: 'Listen, I would not speak about any individual player. Of course, I've worked really well with Jamie. 'He was brilliant for me in my time at Leicester. But no, there's been so many names floated about. But I wouldn't disclose anyone.'
