Oregon Department of Emergency Management activates level 3 response for flooding

Yahoo18-03-2025
The Oregon Department of Emergency Management on Monday activated the State Emergency Coordination Center to level three in response to widespread flooding in western Oregon.
Heavy rain has caused flooding of small streams, creeks and rivers, particularly in the south Willamette Valley, an OEM news release said. The rain has caused urban flooding and increased risk of landslides in areas with steep terrain, the release said.
Multiple flood warnings have been issued and a flood advisory remained in effect, according to the release. Rain is expected to continue throughout the week.
Level three signifies regional response, and local emergency operation centers are also activated, the release said. The activation "allows OEM to maintain situational awareness, facilitate information-sharing, and help fulfill resource requests."
OEM advised Oregonians to check its flood dashboard for updated information. The agency also advised people to avoid travel if possible but to check TripCheck.com for road conditions if they have to travel.

Earthquake in Bergen County shakes parts of New Jersey, New York

An earthquake in Bergen County shook parts of New Jersey and New York on Saturday night. Preliminary data from the United States Geological Survey (USGS) indicates there was a 3.0 earthquake centered 6 miles below the ground near the town of Hasbrouck Heights around 10:18 p.m. "Tremors may have been felt in parts of New York City," OEM officials said in a post on X. According to reports from the USGS, the earthquake was felt as far as 60 miles away. At this point, there are no reports of any damage or injuries. Back in July, a small 1.6 magnitude earthquake happened near Morris Plains in Morris County, the USGS reported, and in January, a 2.4 magnitude earthquake shook Bergen County. Last year, a 4.8 magnitude earthquake hit Readington Township. It was one of the largest earthquakes to hit the East Coast in a century and was felt across the Tri-State area. There were multiple aftershocks in the following days. The largest earthquake on record in New Jersey was a 5.3 all the way back in 1783. Tsunami Advisory canceled for Oregon Coast Wednesday morning

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — A Tsunami Advisory was removed for the Oregon and Washington coasts Wednesday morning after an 8.8 magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Russia Tuesday night. Just after 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, the National Weather Service said that the Tsunami Advisory was no longer in effect. Emergency management officials say the largest waves were recorded at two feet off the Oregon Coast around 11:50 p.m. Tuesday. But while the coast is clear for a tsunami, officials say hazardous conditions could linger for several days — adding that even the strongest swimmers could struggle in the strong waters. 'There is still tsunami water that is hitting the coast, and those waves are stronger, and the currents are going to be a little different than they're used to, and there's also going to be a lot of debris in the water, so logs and other things like that,' Erin Zysett with OEM said. 'They can roll on you, you can get pinned, high tide comes in, and it can be very terrifying and very dangerous.' Old Farmer's Almanac reveals prediction for Pacific Northwest's fall season Tsunamis can also amplify the effects of sneaker waves, so you should never turn your back on the water. 'People should stay away from open coast beaches, estuary mouths, marinas, and harbors. Dangerous currents are possible even without significant wave activity,' officials with the Oregon Department of Geology and Minerals said in a statement. 'Do not go to the beach to watch the waves. Remain in a safe location away from the coast until the advisory is lifted.' Officials say the scare serves as a reminder for people to sign up for local alerts and familiarize themselves with the tsunami warning levels and nearby evacuation routes.
