But he was not at his best at the Winter Gardens and was downed 10-8 by the Dutchman van Veen, who celebrated the best win of his career.

Humphries' exit will make Luke Littler the overwhelming favourite for the event, with the teenager kicking off his campaign against Ryan Searle on Sunday.
Despite not being at his best, Humphries still had chances to beat Van Veen but could only convert 28 per cent of his double attempts.
Van Veen made his move to break at 7-7 and then eventually got over the finishing line on his fourth match dart.
'This feels like the biggest win of my career, to be here at the iconic Winter Gardens,' he said.'Finally I got that winning double and this is the biggest win of my career.
'I guess this makes me the number one seed! I am just going to enjoy this one tonight.
'It means the world, I felt really relaxed on the stage, to beat the reigning champion and world number one, it's an amazing feeling.
'Luke is a true champion, a great guy and the true world number one. To beat the world number one is amazing but it is just one game. I take it game by game.'
James Wade celebrated 20 successive years at the World Matchplay by coasting to a 10-3 win over Joe Cullen.
Wade threw his best-ever average at the Winter Gardens of 104.44, hitting 10 out of 15 doubles.

He hit out at anyone who believes he cannot win the title next week, referencing an old spat with Sky Sports pundit Wayne Mardle who once questioned him.
'I can do it again, 100 per cent. I'm good enough to win this tournament. I mean, I think if anyone believes any different, I think they're a little bit Wayne Mardle-d.
'But I respect Wayne as well. I mean, Wayne's a wonderful person. He's got great knowledge of the game. I think he writes quite a few other players off.
'But I can win this tournament. Of course, again, it's no secret.'
Danny Noppert beat Cameron Menzies 10-2, setting up a second-round meeting with Van Veen.
Wessel Nijman ensured it was a perfect night for the Dutch contingent with a brilliant win over eighth seed Nathan Aspinall.
Nijman, on debut at the Winter Gardens, downed the 2023 champion in style with a 10-6 victory.

Sarina Wiegman is married to Marten Glotzbach, a former coach and economics professor, and together they lead a private, low-profile family life with their two daughters Head coach of the England women's national football team Sarina Wiegman is widely recognised for her success on the field, but her private life remains notably low-key, especially when it comes to her husband and her family life. The celebrated Dutch football coach, 55, who is celebrating a third European Championships win and a second with England, has transformed England 's fortunes since taking over four years ago. With Sarina's coaching, the Lionesses won the Euros in 2022, and then made it all the way to the World Cup final where they were narrowly beaten by Spain in the final in 2023. Sarina was cheered on in Sunday's Switzerland showdown by husband Marten Glotzbach, who has been at her side throughout her incredible career in football. Marten, 55, is a former football coach and currently works as an economics professor in the Netherlands. The couple met in 1994 and have two daughters, both of whom are also passionate about football. Marten started his career working as a youth trainer and coordinator in sports broadcasting and later qualified as a football coach. He has worked alongside Sarina during her coaching stints with both the Dutch and English women's teams. Despite their public roles, Sarina and Marten lead a very private life and rarely share any insight into their home life on social media. They prefer to keep their family life away from the media spotlight, protecting their daughters' privacy and limiting public appearances. A personal tragedy struck only a couple of years into Sarina's time in Britain. Her sister, Diana, had been diagnosed with cancer in 2021 - and over the following year got increasingly ill. She was heartbreakingly never able to travel to England to see Sarina in action. In May 2022, the family was given the tragic news that Diana did not have much time left, and Sarina told the Guardian that despite the heartbreaking update, "We made that such a valuable month." Diana died just over a month before the Women's Euros 2022 began, and Sarina revealed that she had support from throughout the Football Association to get her through such a tough time, explaining that during the tournament she felt incredibly connected to her late sister, who she knew would have wanted her to give the Euros everything she could. However, the night before the final against Germany, the massive loss she had suffered suddenly hit Sarina hard and she broke down. "We were preparing and all of a sudden it hit me: 'OK, this is not what I want.' That's completely normal, it's had such an impact and is so emotional," Sarina said. However, she turned to the support system around her to make sure that she got through the unbelievably difficult moment. "During that whole period, I knew I could talk to anyone, but especially Kate Hays, our sports psychologist. I would just sit down with her and talk about it and, when you talk about it, it's kind of a relief. So we did that the day before the final and actually when we played the final I was really happy in the moment and I didn't have to cry, so that was settled." When the Lionesses won the match, Sarina was seen kissing the bracelet she wore and walking onto the pitch to celebrate with her players - the bracelet had once belonged to her sister, and the manager wore it as a tribute to Diana, keeping her close throughout.

Though it didn't stand, it clearly gave Frimpong a sense of personal triumph. In their clash at Anfield last term, Slot's side put on a clinical display in the second half to dismantle the then German champions. On paper, their clash was a game between two of Europe's best and most in form sides, that would be played on a knife edge. An even first half was followed by a deadly second 45 minutes from the Reds. Luis Diaz netted a flawless hat-trick and Cody Gakpo also found the net, as Liverpool swiftly took control of the match from then-manager Xabi Alonso – who has since moved to Real Madrid – on his return to Anfield. Of course, Konate was only joking with the duo when he brought up the result. Wirtz, Konate and Frimpong all featured in Liverpool's recent pre-season defeat to AC Milan. Frimpong stood out with his bold attacking instincts and lightning speed down the right wing. Wirtz also played as a false nine, demonstrating his elegant movement and skill in tight spaces. Despite this, Milan triumphed over the Reds 4-2, with goals from Rafael Leao, Ruben Loftus-Cheek and a double from Noah Okafor enough to beat Slot's team, while Dominik Szoboszlai and Cody Gakpo scored for Liverpool. Reds supporters are eagerly awaiting Sunday, August 10, when Liverpool's season kicks off with a Community Shield match against Crystal Palace. Their Premier League campaign begins with a home game against Bournemouth on Friday, August 15, followed by an away game at St James' Park against Newcastle United.
