Effort needed to avoid floods due to Almatti discharge: MP

Time of India16-07-2025
Kolhapur: MP Shahu Chhatrapati on Wednesday declared that a coordinated effort will be made to appeal to higher authorities to establish proper control over discharge from Almatti dam, in a bid to avoid floods in Sangli, Kolhapur, and Satara districts of the state.
"We will soon present the Almatti dam issue to the Central Water Commission and the water conservation department in Delhi. Coordination needs to be maintained between the irrigation department and other stakeholders, similar to the committee established between Maharashtra and Karnataka over Almatti dam. If the discharge from the dam is managed, flood control can be achieved," the MP said during a meeting at Govt Rest House.
Also present were farmers' leader and former MP Raju Shetti, coordinator of Maharashtra-Karnataka flood control committee, Sangli irrigation department superintendent Chandrashekhar Patole, Kolhapur irrigation department superintendent Abhijeet Mhetre, executive engineer Smita Mane, Irrigation Federation district president Vikrant Patil-Kinikar, Krishna River Flood Control Committee coordinator Sarjerao Patil, Shiv Sena (UBT) district convenor Vijay Dewane, NCP (SP) district president VB Patil, and farmers.
Members of the Krishna River Flood Control Committee bombarded irrigation department officials from Sangli, Satara, and Kolhapur with questions about increased storage in dams and failure to maintain coordination with the Almatti dam administration in Karnataka. Shetti said, "Experts from World Bank have asked for a detailed project report (DPR) for a Rs3,200 crore flood control project here. But this DPR should include actual work in which obstructions in the flow of rivers are removed.
Creating drainage works won't solve the issue. Shaktipeeth will worsen the flood situation."
Patil-Kinikar said, "Almatti dam was constructed in 2005. Since then, flooding has increased in Kolhapur and Sangli. People can shift, but farmers face losses ."
Krishna River Flood Control Committee coordinator Patil said, "There is additional water storage in Almatti even today. Why are Central Water Commission guidelines not being followed? IMD provides weather alerts. If the irrigation department follows them, they could have taken action in advance. If there is a flood in Kolhapur and Sangli, who will be responsible for it?"
Irrigation officials outlined the work done by the dam administration to maintain coordination between them and Almatti administration.

EPS's dream to form next govt won't come true: Nehru

Trichy: AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami 's dream of forming the next govt in the state will never come true, said municipal administration minister K N Nehru in Trichy on Sunday. DMK 's alliance is in tact and CM M K Stalin is fulfilling the promises made to the people, he said, adding that DMK will return to power with Stalin at the helm after the 2026 assembly election. "He (EPS) doesn't have any subject to speak, but our chief minister is leading our alliance smoothly. Nobody from our alliance met them (NDA), instead, leaders like OPS and from DMDK have met our CM," Nehru said after inaugurating new buses at Panjapur KKBT. Stating that Palaniswami had come out of Salem after four years only now to meet the public, Nehru said people are happy with the state govt's initiatives including Ungaludan Stalin. To a question on PMK leader Anbumani Ramadoss's continuous criticism of DMK govt, Nehru said the PMK leader is being critical of DMK and CM to get himself recognised. On PM Narendra Modi's yet another visit to the state, Nehru said, "We swept the general elections by winning all 40 constituencies when he (Modi) visited Tamil Nadu eight times before, so, we have nothing against his visit." The minister added that more commercial space would open in Panjapur KKBT within two months. Later, at the Trichy collector office, the minister distributed a financial assistance of Rs3 lakh each to the families of three victims of the road accident near Lalgudi on Saturday. Yamuna nears warning threshold again

Once again hovering close to the warning mark, the water level in Yamuna was recorded at 204.14 m at 5 pm on Wednesday, as per the Central Water Commission. While the warming threshold is 204.5 m, the danger level stands 205.33 m. The highest flood level ever recorded is 208.66 m at the Old Railway Bridge monitoring station. The river has been rising steadily since July 30, when the water level stood around 202 m. The water levels dipped slightly on August 5, and rose again on Wednesday. According to Google's Flood Hub forecasting system, the river is expected to rise another 10–50 cm by Thursday evening. As the situation escalates, the Delhi government had last month decided to formally approach the Haryana government once again seeking control of the ITO barrage, which plays a key role in managing Yamuna's flow through the city. 'The Delhi government will formally request the Haryana government to hand over the control of the ITO barrage to bolster the city's flood management,' underlined an official statement. Irrigation and Flood Control Minister Parvesh Sahib Singh had approved the proposal. The move follows last year's flooding crisis, when jammed gates at the ITO barrage which has been under Haryana's jurisdiction were blamed for worsening the situation. Over 25,000 people were displaced and water treatment plants were shut down. Even as the gates have since been repaired, officials said full operational control is essential for swift emergency action. The ITO barrage remains a politically sensitive site. While Delhi controls the Wazirabad barrage and Uttar Pradesh manages Okhla, the ITO barrage is with Haryana which has been a source of friction in recent years.
