Indian Railways has introduced advanced Measuring, Recording, and Instrumentation (MRI) technology to enhance the safety and efficiency of electric traction. The system, mounted on Tower Cars, continuously monitors and records key Overhead Equipment (OHE) parameters such as contact wire height, stagger, and GPS-based asset positioning.
Waltair Division of East Coast Railway has adopted this technology to ensure safe and punctual train operations. Divisional Railway Manager Lalit Bohra said pantograph maintenance is crucial, as the device connects the locomotive to the overhead power lines.
Manual inspections often fail to detect emerging faults in time, leading to disruptions. The MRI system enables real-time monitoring and proactive maintenance, reducing the risk of pantograph entanglements and conductor failures.
Senior Divisional Electrical Engineer (TRD) Shivanad Prasad said the equipment helps assess OHE changes due to maintenance or upgrades, while Senior Divisional Commercial Manager K. Saandeep added that the technology improves safety and punctuality by preventing breakdowns and delays.

IIT Delhi launches MRI research facility to foster innovation in medical imaging

New Delhi: The Indian Institute of Technology Delhi (IIT Delhi) announced the launch of a cutting-edge Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) research facility to boost innovations in medical imaging. Established under the Institute of Eminence (IoE) initiative, the facility is equipped with a 1.5 Tesla clinical-grade MRI scanner. It is the first of its kind among leading engineering and technology institutions in India, dedicated exclusively to research and teaching. Unlike conventional MRI setups embedded within hospital ecosystems, this facility is designed to foster unrestricted innovation in medical imaging, particularly in the field of MRI. This facility will enable cutting-edge research in various areas across applications in MR imaging, including the development of new contrast agents, acquisition sequences, optimisation of imaging protocols, development of MR-compatible devices, and integration of artificial intelligence in image processing. 'This new research MRI facility will enable research and innovation in imaging and support IIT Delhi's efforts to create new knowledge at the interface of science, engineering, and medicine to make an impact in healthcare,' said Prof. Rangan Banerjee, Director of IIT Delhi. Located within the Centre for Biomedical Engineering (CBME) at IIT Delhi, the facility will initially support research using phantoms and, with appropriate regulatory approvals, will extend to clinical studies involving volunteers. It will also serve as a hands-on training platform for students enrolled in IIT Delhi medical imaging courses, enhancing their practical exposure to advanced imaging technologies. According to CBME's Prof. Anup Singh and Prof. Amit Mehndiratta, who led this visionary initiative, the dream to establish such a facility 'was visualised five years ago'. The facility will offer a new dimension to teaching and learning in medical imaging at the varsity. It was initiated on July 9 and the first MRI safety session was conducted by the B-MEC Imaging Pvt. Ltd., who installed the MRI scanner. 'This advanced imaging facility will help several researchers from different disciplines at IIT Delhi. This will also open up several opportunities for research collaborations with medical institutes in NCR and across India,' said Prof. Vivek Buwa, Dean of Planning, IIT Delhi.

Bullet train: First section of the 21-km undersea tunnel sees breakthrough

India's bullet train project achieved a major milestone Monday when the first section of the 21-kilometre undersea tunnel between BKC (Bandra-Kurla Complex) and Thane made a breakthrough. The 2.7-km tunnel section, part of the Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train project, has been constructed between Ghansoli and Shilphata in Maharashtra. Out of the total 21 km, 5 km is being constructed using the New Austrian Tunnelling Method (NATM) between Shilphata and Ghansoli, while the remaining will be built using Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs). The tunnel also includes a 7-km-long undersea section beneath Thane Creek, the ministry of railways said in a statement. To expedite tunnelling in the NATM portion, an Additionally Driven Intermediate Tunnel (ADIT) was constructed, allowing simultaneous excavation towards Ghansoli and Shilphata sides, the statement added. Comprehensive safety measures have been implemented at the site, including ground settlement markers, piezometers, inclinometers, strain gauges, and biometric access control systems to ensure safe and controlled tunnelling activities without disturbing nearby structures. India's first high-speed train project is now moving faster. Track laying and the construction of overhead electrical wires, stations, and bridges are also going on rapidly. The construction work in Maharashtra, which was delayed earlier, has also picked up pace. In parallel, the progress on procurement of systems for operations and control is also going well, the statement said. Indian Railways is developing the country's first 508-km bullet train project using Japanese Shinkansen technology. Accordingly, it has secured approval from Japan to use its latest generation E10 Shinkansen trains in the Indian project. Japan is currently running E5 trains. Next generation trains are E10, which Japan will also introduce later. In the spirit of strategic partnership between Japan and India, the Japanese government has agreed to introduce E10 Shinkansen trains in the Mumbai-Ahmedabad Bullet train project. It is noteworthy that E10 will be introduced simultaneously in India and Japan, the ministry of railways said in the statement. Shinkansen technology is expected to set new benchmarks for speed, safety, and reliability. This reflects the deep strategic and technological cooperation between India and Japan, the statement said. The success of the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail (MAHSR) project is laying the foundation for future bullet train corridors in India. Some of the corridors under consideration are Delhi-Varanasi, Delhi-Ahmedabad, Mumbai-Nagpur, Mumbai-Hyderabad, and Chennai-Mysore, among others.
